Sure there will be taxation but whopping state taxes aren't the key. I didn't support tobacco tax increases in the 90's, and I don't support the cannabis taxes now. The democrats have it backwards. Taxing cannabis is under the guise of funding "healthcare" which really promotes this prohibition in the first place. Then the money gets spent on other crap other than where it was supposed to be. This is the whole tobacco master settlement starting over again.

Taxed and Regulated is fine but I'm against "controlling" it. I can grow all the tobacco I want as long I don't try to take it to market. Cannabis should be the same.

i can definitely agree with this, i've seen quite a few here that would be fine with this too
state and/or federal government might like to get into the home grows, but how can they do that?
try to jail home growers that won't cough it up?
this is a failed strategy, they've tried that, it just doesn't work
and trying to get juries to convict someone for growing at home because they didn't pay a government tax?

I just think they should make it available to everyone. Right now the wording leaves it up to local government to decide the taxes. So there's really nothing to say stop some county or city against cannabis from just jacking up a high tax as a deterrant. Pretty much what goes on in New York were a pack of smokes is $10 yet only costs $.25-50 to manufacture. Set a tax and be done with it, make it available to all farmers, and open it up home growers as well. Let's face it most people are too lazy to grow a garden they'd rather buy it as needed.

i can understand the reluctance to opening up the tax 'can of worms', it's certainly not ideal
let's say that prop 19 goes down
we've seen what it took for this proposition to get this far, money
the legislature is certainly not going to draw up a tax free bill, tax free does noting for them
future props will likely take some bucks to get on the ballot
maybe this can be done at the grass roots level, so to speak
but sadly, bucks tend to rule, my guess the next prop will be a bit different, but will have some taxes in it to try to pull in the borderline voters

If people have the option to medicate legally under Prop 19, there will be no need for free healthcare, lol

I just think it's a hot bed for getting shit done.

The federal mj program has been run out of research triangle for ages (Duke, NCSU, and UNC). Most anything that is accepted by those schools gets acknowledged without question. As well NC already has cannabis in a schedule lower than any state in the nation. It's some special schedule created specifically for cannabis which stated there was little no chance of abuse, and limited pharmacological evidence.

Then there's all the tobacco farmers out of a crop after the tobacco buyout in 2008. A few politicians tried to get hemp legalized then but it didn't go anywhere. They told the old guys to go grow pine trees, as if they have 30 years for that. Phillip Morris closed one of it's factories and moved offshore. RJ Reynolds is consolidating two of theirs. There's a lot of clout in that state if the can get it pushed in.

This is the way I see it. California made mmj easy to make money selling cards and picking up sales tax. Problem is they're finding out now people think the card is too much of a "hassle". Now they have to jack the tax up higher to make up the revenue. But it still won't work to help the end user because it doesn't allow a free market. The dispensaries, their existence, and local taxes will drive the prices.

If you really want to get the price down people need to go buy cards and assign a caregiver. The more legal supply we get out there the lower the price will be, and we'll keep just paying sales tax. Legalize it like they want and you'll be hit with a luxury tax as well.

Yeah now down here in SoCal u can get a card for $60..well worth it IMO bc you get validity from a doctor and peace of mind from petty officers.

I didn't pay it much attention either until I read over the bill recently. My dad's a 30yr master mechanic there for RJR and everytime I talk to him it's some new hurdle their trying to cross. Phillip Morris even backed up FDA regulation when Obama went to office so that tells me they're ready for a change. I don't really think this will lead to any mass legalization of cannabis but it very well could lead to a behind-the-counter pharmaceutical market. NC's current economic situation and corporate funding creates an interesting playing field. All the tobacco buyout payments end in 2014 so the ag/tobacco industry has to come up with something by then.

yeah, there is all kind of positive MJ activity right now
i don't want to call prop 19 the tip of the iceberg, but it's not the only game in town
we're right on the edge of MMJ in NY, not to mention other states
there's activity behind the scenes at the federal level for MJ rescheduling, and the AMA issued a statement in favor of MMJ
we may not hit the homerun in California, but i think other advances may be a great consolation prize

"r3drock" in the doc it states people over 21 can have under a ounce at a time a grow in an area of less than 25' which is were your getting the growing specs but this does not affect med card holders. prop 19 and MJ medical laws are two separate laws. If it doesn't say it changes the medical side of things than it should not

I agree. I'm more afraid California is going to screw themselves for this agriculturally. Once these tax laws hit the books it will take a miracle to repeal them, and since they haven't presented a way to promote the supply where's it to come from? It's still going to be based on the few collectives and caregivers that produce "more than enough". It seems like more of plan to make sure this can't become a commodity in California, a bill that does more to to dictate the price and profits for the state rather than creating a market to do so.
