Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH) Thread

When CMH first came out Philips said it was working on a 1000 watt version. I just got confirmation from the head of Philips Lighting Division that they currently have NO PLANS to release a 1000 watt version. Sucks, but there it is. I'd been hoping to upgrade to a 1000 watt CMH, hopes now dashed to pieces on the jagged rocks of reality.

i have a 250w CMH but my only damn HPS ballast shit the bed...
fortunatly i have about 6 400w and 3 250w MH's with ballasts so it wont hurt me losing the CMH, but it did burn so pretty :(
id like to get about 4 more of em but @ 50$ a whack they hurt the wallet.

and when it was hot, i wouldnt dare touch that 250.. unless i wanted to lose my fingertips. that pic dude is holding the lamp by its base (the coolest part on any lamp) when the lamp was on for maybe 30-40 secs :/
they burn slightly cooler than HPS and Standard MH, but i think you would only really notice a large difference if you were running say 1200w+ of HPS and then switched to CMH, i could see your temps dropping 5-10 deg, but like i said, only if you were already pulling lots of wattage. i had the 250 in a cab and i didnt notice any major dif from the hps i had in it

yeah i have known about the cmh's for a while they only come in 250 and 400 and are a hps replacement i have been tryen to get my hydro shop to carry them but they were never marketed for growing but from what i can tell on the specs they should be great im going to have my shop order me ssome. as far as the wallet comment imo 50 for a bulb with those specs isnt bad as im sure once they catch on for growing that price will skyrocket. i would liiek to see a side by side grow with these if there is anyone up to it

Ceramic Metal Halide bulbs most certainly do not come in just 250 and 400 watt sizes! They come in a wide variety of smaller sizes as well. Many Hydro houses only offer the two bigger sizes for sale because they are classified as a "Retro Fit" bulb - that is, they work with an HPS ballast. Some of the smaller bulbs will only work well on a dedicated, CMH, ballast.

The point I'm trying to make is "Be careful that you're using CMH bulbs and ballasts that are suited for each other". Because all CMH bulbs don't work with HPS ballasts! Some will work, but with poor efficiency!

they make CMH from 75w to 400w, in several lamp types.
to match a ballast with a lamp, simply match the ANSI numbers. an M59 lamp runs on an M59 ballast. and so on.

That's completely true, but an incomplete truth. CMH's under 250 burn on standard PULSE START Mh ballasts. I was bout to say what you just did T.H. They make the 4k Alto MasterColor in all standard wattages from 50-150, but ONLY PULSE START BALLASTS WILL PUSH THEM. Others roach your lamps slowly but surely, if they even start them at all.

I have a 70w PsMH ballast with a CMH that I don't run because I don't have a capacitor for it and it keeps blowing the breaker (there are only four circuits in my appartment... wonderful) and one 100 cmh that I have waiting for my White Castle and Blue Cheese seeds when they pop. Gonna scrog with a 1.5 sqf screen in a file cab. Oh yeah.

And yes, you CAN let the 70W CMH heat up for a good 45 min and touch it. It wouldn't be pleasant, and you may get skin cancer (lamps kick out LOTS of UVb, good for THC bad for skin cells), but I did it, and it hurt (bout as hot as the exteriour of a cheap black and decker coffee pot cruet), but I didn't get a burn. Won't do it again though.

Just had an experience with a 400W Philips CMH. used to replace a 400W HPS. Kept room temp 5f lower. room 10x10x6ish. bright/intense as nuts too
