Its not a good deal because all the product in that kit are budget/crap quality. Look on your local classifieds and there will be people who decided growing aint for them so they sell the equipment cheap, take your time and youll find deals. Im gonna try cmh but i found a used deal on a 630.

Nah I've looked, small town. The lamp could be better quality/brand but it's not all that bad especially being on a budget, Imo at least.

I got my 630 on ebay for under 500 with new bulbs that i bought. i think youre better off buying quality brands because every low end product seems to stink. the tent will probably have bad seams and light leaks, the fans will burn out quickly, the light will probably be an am radio beacon and the carbon filter wont work. Also bigger is better with tents, thy shrink up with the negative pressure.

only philips ballast, sun systems. Nothing else is quite as good because phillips just invented the thing. if you want the newest tech you have to pay alot though, thats why I said hps. Also im hearing cmh is better as a supplemental light and may make small buds?

Ushio bulbs do have a good name, but yeah Philips know their shit. In England I got my 315 for £200, its a maxibright 315 square wave ballast but came with the Philips bulb. But I bought it bare, didn't want the reflector. Which works fine in my situation because its my veg light. A lot of the cost is the bulb, I think the Philips bulb is £90 on its own.
Where you really don't want to skimp is on the filter. I know what brands in Europe and USA are top quality but no idea what brands in Canada are good or bad. I don't see any issue with that fan. At the price its at its not a cheap ass fan. Just a standard inline axial, I have a few similar and been running for many years.

Looking at the filter in more detail, I don't think that's either cheap nor low quality. It uses Australian Carbon. Should do the job.

its probably the same carbon I use, its from sunlight supply. But there isnt much point investing in 4 inch fans and filters, you want more airflow and slower so it isnt a noisy. -pro tip, use a variac instead of fan speed control if noise is an issue. i looked at the site and their setups and the 3x3 with 600 hps cost 300 more than the 315 lec you linked thats a warning when hps is more expensive- the lec is low budget.
Im not saying it wont work, its just i feel you may be reinvesting in the near future.

What's the difference between a speed controller and a variac? I'm looking at fans and such.

Sorry to thread jack.

Im no electronic expert. A variac controls the voltage old school style, the fan makes no humming noises when controlled by a variac. you want an old school variac off ebay, built in the '50s or '60s when we used to build things properly.

I'll look into them then. Might help with the annoying humming my current fan does. Better yet. It may even quiet down the bigger fan I want.

A speed controller weighs 5 ounces and makes a humming sound, A variac weighs over 5 lbs of wound copper and doesnt hum. Dont bu the chinese newly built crap, buy an old one thats been in service for 40+ years and waiting for more duty.

Is there a genral price range I should be looking at? I'd never heard of a variac until now.

look on ebay and use the recent sold prices. Its gonna usually cost over 50 but there are so many used units that its up in the air, you may be the only bidder on a perfect variac. theres different amps or something but like i said im no electronics expert, i think youre good with 10 amps but I may be wrong.

I don't need highest tech or top of the line, Ive seen many impressive 315w CMH grows. I live in Ontario which has a probably the worst hydro rates in the country so that's why I'm staying off the HPS and also the heat..ive read the 315w doesnt give off too much heat so would be prefect for a little 3x3 tent. I could get a philps blub and use the other as a back up. I was also looking at cobs and led but limited here in Canada. If someone wants to link me a good light kit whatever it may be(LED, COB, LEC) for about $500Canadian please do.

"Hi 3x3 the V18 5 cob with 1 x1750k and 4 x4000k Vero18. $350 For $600 you can get a 10 cob Vero 18 array with 5 x1750k and 5 x4000k. It has two power cords so you can use sunrise sunset simulation with the deep red 1750k For 600 I can build you a 4 cob Vero 29 system. The 10 cob is obviously the best deal."
local Canadain builder of cobs, thoughts?
