Curing for only 1 week?

Lots of haters who just want to be negative.

If your shit smells like hay or grass id say it’s more of a growing issue than a drying/cure issue. It should smell like chronic all through flower phase. When you touch a lower bud you fingers should smell like whatever terps the strain is pushing.

In my experience the hay/grass smell comes from having room that’s too hot and an environment not ideal.

When to harvest is something that will come with running the strain and getting to know it. Every strain is different even amongst the same seedlines. Typically the window is 8-11 weeks depending on each strain. Look for white pistols turning colors and receding back and bud filling out. Typically I don’t even think about pulling or even looking to see if it’s done in anything less than 60 days. With experience and patience you will start to figure out what times best for the strain your running. First runs typically aren’t your best runs. It takes time to figure out how to dial in each strain you run.

As far as after harvest best thing to do is hang dry with moving air at all times until they get slightly crispy to the touch. Put in glass jar/container for 12 or so hours, feel them if they are wet leave container open if they are dry keep it closed.

Repeat this until about the 2nd time they dry out and then leave them jarred checking every so often to make sure they are getting too wet bc if you leave slightly wet bud closed you gonna get mold. After they are dry they are ready to smoke/cure.

Over time you will get a hang of it. Just like anything , if you want to be good at it trial and error is the best thing. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, that’s how you learn.

It usually is a growing issue as in not letting the plant grow long enough. Most of these hay smelling posts show pictures of immature bud.

I don’t agree with that. I’ve had to cull plants with nanners plenty of times testing buds for TGA back in the day and they still smelled dank as fuck even premature, but in testing they got the axe as soon as the nanners showed. I would still dry the female parts and use in edibles and they still had a strong smell.

So your telling me that 3/4 weeks in flower your buds don’t make your fingers sticky and smell like dank?

I’ve been growing a long time and I have only had grassy/hay bullshit when I was a rookie not knowing how to get my environment right and how important it was.

Yep. I chop close to the soil/pot and then hang them on a lower branch from a hook. At this point I find it's really easy to get around it and remove all the larger leaves. After a couple of days it's started to dry out on the tips of the bud leaves. I then cut it so to remove all the thickest stem parts of the plant and hang it as pictured. In all it's between 1-3 weeks all up to dry it properly. Let's not forget that some plants have different flowers. The bigger and harder the buds the longer to dry. Pure indica breeds are strains which dries faster.

That smell can also come from the insides of the flowers not being properly cured and dried. There are greedy growers out there that grow great stuff but bag and sell it b4 it's really ready. The gf's young bloke bought an oz off his mate that smelt like lawn cuttings when he opened the bag. I saw the plants just before they were pulled. They were perfectly grown. After leaving it out for a couple of days they hadn't shrunk much but the weight had dropped nearly 8 grams. They smelt great again too.

Of course mine do. I don't know what some of these newer growers are doing but harvesting so premature isn't helping. Look at the photo on post 101 harvested 3 weeks early maybe more. That's what I'm talking about. I'm sure there are other factors involved but chopping a plant weeks early is not going to yield what can be considered the "Dank" they're looking for.

I never have hay smelling weed. It's sticky and stinky 3-4 weeks in. I also let it grow until it's finished before harvesting. It smells dank from the day I harvest. This plant went another 6-8 weeks before I chopped it. From the looks of some of what people post they would have chopped this in 2 weeks.

Yield wise I’ll agree they aren’t getting what they should be.

Back in the day when I first started growing it was highly illegal so venting, carbon filters and lots of environment issues came about bc we were literally growing guerilla style and when you went to a hydro store you had to look around first and be super careful. Amazon and internet delivery weren’t around. On top of the fact I was basically late teenager early 20’s kid trying to grow on a budget

That’s when I’ve had some hay runs as my temps weren’t in check bc I didn’t vent properly. I can say from experience the high temps will get you grass/hay bullshit smelling weed everytime. On top of a terrible smoke.

I think a lot of the boof you see is bc these peoples rooms aren’t dialed in like they need to be ,on top of their impatience and lack of skills at this point. Growing is easy when your temps and humidity are kept in check. Environment is everything IMO.

Yep. That hasn't even gotten 1 brown/orange pistal on it yet. Usually after the colour change starts THAT is the flowering stage. So another 5-8 weeks to full maturity. Is that a White something or other cross? I did a Frost Fortress a couple of rotations back and it looked like it had been sugar coated.

Ya 60 day minimum 12/12 with 90% of strains out there. Every once in a while you’ll find one that’s a true 8 weeker but most the time it’s 63-70 days.

Growing over 40 years and I remember the paranoia going to the grow store. Making sure we weren't being followed. Worried about our license plate number being taken. I'm sure glad those days are gone.

I agree.

Im a rookie with only 1 finished grow (soon to be 2) and my first grow my buds smelled amazing, they lost the smell during the drying process, but after a few days curing the smells came right back....and after 2-3 weeks curing, it was all smooth, tasty and potent smoke!

Even as a newbie, I grew better grade bud than my local dispensaries. And in terms of taste, it was some of the best weed ive had in years.

Those plants were Azure Haze and Bubblegum S1.

My current grow my plants have been dialed in....the only issue i had was underwatering at one point....but then they bounced right back.

I think my current plants are gonna be head and shoulders above my 1st grow....right now im flowering:

GDP
Amnesia Hazy Jones
Alien Sour Apple
Watermelon Kush

GDP smells of grape/purple/berries
Amnesia Hazy Jones has a strong wood aroma
Alien Sour Apple smells slightly sour, like a green apple
Watermelon Kush smells sweet and dank

I dont understand how ppl end up with hay unless they dont cure properly.

My 1st grow I didnt dry long enough and the terps and smoothness were still 1st class.

Just checked 101. There's only a light spattering of trics on it. None of the leaves have yellow or purple discolouration. I have 2 4x4s for my grows. The gf bought her 20 yr old a tent and I gave him a 600 digital light and an adjustashade. I tell him what he's doing wrong and what's going to happen. His plants were looking great. Been hounding him to get some 6" air movement fans or he'll get mould. Now he has mould. I suppose they have to learn. Like giving a 15yr old apprentice a 30oz framing hammer and have them hand nail rafters on. They hit their fingers. A Lot.

I used to park a few streets away from the hydroponic store and walk there to get what I needed in the 90's. Now it's a case of swapping F1's with the manager and group discussions on the pros and cons every time I stop in. It's like a social club

Just did 1 beautiful Lemon Stilton that I got through Barneys. I've carefully gone over each bud and pulled out 14 F1's. Coz it was a SOG grow I got about 100 grams off it. Which isn't bad with 14 pots in a 4x4 tent

Genetics classify that hay smell in my books. More experienced growers should be handling those strains IMO. But I will say iv had some strains smell like hay no matter what. Only good thing about the buds was the looks. No smell and low THC. Hay smell goes away with curing. But no good smell comes back iv noticed. So I stick to the strains that would be chopped at 6-7 weeks hella early not mature at all. and smell like sweet or kush the whole time drying. <—-not that I do that. Iv taken samples before tho. Let your weed dry slowly and throughout I guess. As slow as possible

The Bubblegum grows great outside. Gets to about 6'-7' and is a beautiful thing to just sit and look at. The only problem was the smell near the end. You could smell it 8 houses away. Bit of a nail biter waiting out those last 2 weeks for full maturity

I know chlorophyll is to blame for smell.

But after that’s said and done. Some strains don’t have a pungent smell after words. I feel Genetics is 1st most in pretty much anything. Potency smell flavor
