Cutting fan leaves

The smooth single leaves near the tip of each branch are a sign of revegging. Your plants will get much larger, before Fall, but the buds are done forming until then.

Take them ALL OFF! Then burn it to the ground, but make sure you stomp it out while it's still smoldering (improves taste). I then use 3mL CNS 17, 13mL Bud Blood, 2qts Hygrozome, 2mL of bleach, 5oz Grandma's Maple Syrup (make sure you get the blue bottle), 18oz Cha-Ching (gotta get dat cha-ching BoyEEE!), 2qts Sensi-Bloom, add that to 2tsp of water. This mix should be fairly syrupy. Spread over plant. Then mix another batch for the next plant and repeat. Dis technique has given me da dopest pot I have ever smoked!! I swear! Once I had a friend (Clarence) who took two hits. I said, "whoa what are you doing Clarence, you are Jewish and a diabetic, you are going all crazy up in da kabala?!!?!". Clarence said, "BroNDOOOOOOOOO!" and died. That's how strong this pot was.

so veggie i chopped her down as my grows are not allowed to go over 4 months.. the weed is weak but tolerable taste good...jus smokin blunts with it....ha ha found 2 beans in the main cola too...so that thing was not gonna be a keeper anyway. i did keep the beans jus in case...ive gotten so busy at work its hard to keep up with the gardening when i put family and work first. so one stupid short rider is growing and budding obviously...maybe get some more in the ground this weekend.....

Me too. My girls were doing so good. I didn't realize over days weeks of pruning i slowley cut most of my fan leaves off like an idiot not paying attention. Now they have have been stuck at around 8 inches tall for a couple weeks. Lesson learned, just sucks cause im sick and tired of having to rely on other people and am getting ancy.

Lot's of falsehoods in that link, posted only to get attention. Everyone is looking for something new, innovative, "high tech".

Sorry but budsites do not have the capability of photosynthesis, significant green leaf matter just isn't there. Nor do folks understand the penetration value of R and FR light through the canopy. Believe what you want but to remove the very unit that produces bud as another noob generated hocus pocus feel-good drill about getting light to a place that does no good..... is quite funny.

Ok ben just to help try to give a "testimonial" to this method I got some pics. This is my Super Skunk.

Before Flowering:

Disregard the biggest plant (front left). That one I killed because of my own stupidity.

When I put these plants into flowering, I did not top, supercrop, or FIM them. The one clone I have had 2 chutes on it before hand. Again no topping of any kind involved.

Again:

Defoliation Week 1:

Defoliation Week 2:

Week 3:

Week 3~3 1/2:

I have simply removed FAN LEAVES that shadow potential bud sites. I keep the foliage on the actual bud site, just prune the individual fan leaves. The pictures speak for themselves. NO TOPPING, NO FIM, NO SUPERCROP, SIMPLY "DEFOLIATION."

YungMoola - Your plant's buds look under-developed for week 4. Are you showing those plants to show that defoliation is a good or bad thing?

That's fine if you think they are under developed. Like I said they are in about their 4th week. A little less than that. I guess we'll see whether or not it pays off eh?

EDIT: So I checked the date of my journal posts about my clones that I am defoliating and I sent them into flower June 7th. So less than a month of flowering still. 24 days of flowering to be exact.

I was going to post some pics of plants at day 27 for comparison, but then I realized that we're talking about different strains and different conditions. While mine is a 77 day sativa-dominant strain, it's already formed colas, but the foliage is quite dense as I don't pull off leaves. Anyways, good luck and hopefully you can do a side-by-side at some point.

The pictures speak nothing without a control group. You have no idea what they would be like if you left them alone.

i have started defoliating all the way through the entire grow. Much conventional wisdom on this is down the drain. My plants are growing great, more healthy and are producing more buds during the same cycle. I remove all fan leaves that have at least a 1/4" budding joint established.

To me it seems as if fan leaves do not store up the energy of the plant as commonly thought, but they actually TAKE energy away from the budding joints. In my testing, i found zero difference in the size of buds for branches with or without fanleaves, BUT, those buds covered by the fanleaves were smaller. Thus, removing them actually increased bud size as the canopy had more light.

Thus my realization is that fan leaves help to begin the budding joint, then only exist as a "castoff" for animals browsing, and to take excess toxins in. I also notice that after the budding joint is well established, fan leaves generally begin to redstem and lose vigor anyway.

Benefits:
1) more light and airflow through canopy, and more even
2) MANY more budding joints growing
3) less problems due to density(ie. less bud rot, pm, etc)
4) bigger fatter flowers as they receive more light
5) easier trimming
6) less nutrients needed
etc..

I've grown over 25yrs, and have always defoliated some. Now i do it consistently and LOVE the results.

As folks say, "Are we growing fan leaves or buds??"

Both, buds with fan leaves. i have been doing side by side experiments with my master kush just to see and i like the ones with the biggest buds.these 2 are under the same twin 600 hps and are 1 week apart,no way in hell the trimmed plant will come close to the non trimmed and the trimmed plant does not take the same nutes as well. the non trimmed plant will finish early , 7 weeks on a 9-11 wk strain. the trimmed plant will probably have to go 9 or 10 wks. there might be a strain that likes to be hacked but it aint master kush;) the first pic is the one i took about 1/3 of the fans off against my better judgement. It should be a piece of cake to trim that piece of shit huh.
