D3monic's Stow N Grow TV

​My first grow since I was a teen (17 years ago) ... boy things have changed. All I had back then was a closet and the growers guide as my bible...
Well no closet for me now, no... I need those for practical things like hanging clothes. Besides, with the little ones around and guests I thought it best to go with a smallish stealth grow.

I have been eyeballing this beast for a while and have been biding my time for it to go out on me... I have flip flopped on ideas for what I would do.... aquarium, terrarium... grow.



Well yesterday I was bored and decided I was tired of waiting, I burned one and gutted it. Above pic is with the screen and grill on obviously.

Here's how it looks gutted with the screen and stuff off.



Measures: 48"x58x17 with a 22" recess

The screen slides up and off relatively easy for an adult. The grill just pops off..... in the 6 years i have owned the TV no one has removed either obviously. Of course this opens up for nosey mechanically inclined friends wanting to take a look at my busted tv. I figure id just tell them I was saving it for an aquarium or something one day. Wouldn't surprise them one bit knowing me.

The bottom has screened ventilation holes, I may utilize these.



I have obvious moisture concerns considering its made out of all cheap pressed wood.

Q: What would you guys recommend I coat/line the interior of the box with?

I have easy access to mylar emergency blankets. I also have a hydro store (midwest hydroganics) within driving distance so I can easily pick up some black white plastic sheeting.

But... I was thinking maybe I should paint the inside with a white epoxy paint like you would seal a basement floor with... something with a mold inhibitor maybe?
Or even better can you guys recommend anything you may have used before that worked well for you that would double as a reflective surface?

lighting: I don't want heat and fan noise to be an issue so I am leaning toward LED/CFL.
I found a guy on craigslist selling a Haight 180 Watt LED Grow light PPF-800 for $150

Any of you ever hear of the brand or have experience with them? google doesn't seem to produce a whole lot on them. But I was thinking this light panel and a handfull of cfl's as needed.

Ventilation: I am leaning toward DIY pencup carbon filters for exhaust... but I am not clear on what size hole to drill and for what size and type of fan. I assume computer but need to do more research or user input.

Timers: I love me some automation. Ever since I was a reef keeper I have hung on to my precious reef controller. I can control a series outlets from my laptop with a program called aquanotes. I can set timers, exceptions, pumps, fans ect. Currently its on my 75 gal planted aquarium but thanks to X10 modules I can still use it to control the grow in another room.

Grow Medium: While I think hydro is easily within my means I have decided to take soil route. I used a mix of Organic potting soil, perlite, charcoal and coco fiber and a few handfulls of Dr. Elseys precious kitty natural kitty litter for no other reason than shits and giggles.

Ferts: No idea yet, I would like to stick to growing organic and plan on using nitrogen rich water from when I do water changes on my aquarium. You got suggestions I'd love to hear them

Crop: My first lil gals/guinea pigs are just going to be some decent bag seed I got from a buddy. But once I am confident in my cabinets stability and suitability I will order myself something nice and heady. Maybe blue dream since its a fav of mine.

Here's my first lil seedling getting a dose of some CO2 since my reactor got taken offline when it started leaking water today. Lil gal got to reap the reward.



She had a rough start since I wasn't serious when I first started them. I did the wet paper towel and once sprouted placed them in small net pots filled with a sponge material and partially submerged in the planted aquarium as an experiment.

All but this plantlet perished quickly but this one flourished. After starting to do some serious research and watching all the awesome grow video's on youtube I decided to pull the trigger and start a real build. And here we are!


Any how... its 2am and officially my b-day. Got to get up for work in 4 hours.

Lol yea this thing is a beast and takes up some serious space but could take some good abuse from the kids as well.

Anyone? Heading to the hydro store real soon. I guess I'll just plan on painting with an epoxy and using two tone plastic to cover the screen area in the front.

Thanks guys! Just got home from picking up the LED lights.... holy crap was that a bad neighborhood. Quite possibly the worst I have been in the Chicago area. I thought for sure I was going to get robbed and killed. I had to drive around for 15 min looking for an atm. Thank god it was daylight. I would have told him to get bent ... but the seller was nice and since I was able to leave with my kidneys I tossed in an extra $10

Well I had a good birthday... stuffed myself and passed the frick out (prolly to my gf's dismay) Long day at work and I was getting a lil bored so I started rummaging to find things I could use in the grow. I was thinking about what all I needed when I remembered we had a big server tower that we never used just collecting dust up in the storage barn. I snapped the key off in the lock and thought I was screwed but I found a ladder and climbed ontop and was pleased to find this whole unit was held in by two external screws.



I also stopped by Hydrorganics and grabbed some panda paper organic fert for the lil gals and I had a brain storm for a mod on the DIY carbon filter using a 5 and 6" net pot I already tested and other than not having enough carbon to fill it a pair of panty hose work perfectly but stretch a lil tight.

After the store I took a ride to home depot for some low odor no voc utra white paint , black duct tape and a big ass whole saw.

I am almost ready to finish the build but first.... I need to clean up this mess


Its still disheveled since the last project, I have been neglecting the garage since it looks like a scene out of arachnid phobia. I was making pretty good progress cleaning a bit ago but we ordered chinese burned one and watched the roast of charlie sheen... and well here I sit... needing to get my lazy ass back to work

Been a long weekend and didn't have much time to work on the TV in secret so it ended up being long hours in the garage in the middle of the night.

I covered the back of the screen with panda plastic so the light doesn't shine through.... as beautiful as a blue/red shadowbox of pot leaves would be It defeats the point.



I have to admit... I wasn't a very big fan of trying to line the box with it. Was a bit more of a pain than i thought it would be.



But after a hour or two and a arse load of staples I got it all finished.



Cutting the rest of the angled wood out turned out to be a lil harder than I expected. Was three layers of wood glued together. I burned through a sawzall blade in less than a foot. Ended up getting a lil dangerous with the skillsaw.

I did three coats of the Bahre ultra white low odor / no voc and the black is still showing through a little but it should be sufficient I hope.



Holy crap this damn thing is heavy.. the canopy has to weigh at leas 80lbs and is huge and awkward. Was a bitch to get it on and off by myself and I have no intention of ever taking it off again.



This afternoon I got the ventilation system installed.

5" Hole-saw ripped through like it was nothing thankfully.



Unfortunately the screws i used where a tiny bit too long .... oops. Nothing a lil ductape cant fix



Here it is with the netpot carbon filter and air intake in place. hardly any noise... hopefully none with the screen on



Now I just need to get off the couch and finish the electrical. Estimating that after I order seeds and all that build will be well under $300

Got most the wiring done and tested out the light... damn this thing is bright. I'm going to have to keep my eyes open for another one. Not sure I will even need to suppliment with CFL's but I can easily add them in.



Best part is I managed to get zero light leak on the first try.... well I need to raise the light all the way and test again but so far so good. If you go to the back of the tv and look in the fans theres a tiny pink glow but at that point someone would be wondering why the hell there's fans running on a broken tv Ill have to borrow the reef clubs par meter to see what exactly they are throwing out.

On a side note, seedlings are doing... well ok I guess. The first one seems to have slowed growing (~2 weeks old) and the newer sprout just keeps going up. I assume the first seedling is spending energy establishing a better root system , should I rebury the tall one further?

I have spent forever digging through attitudes seed list coming up with ideas of what to order. I prefer a good soaring high over couch lock stone any day... I am lazy enough as it is.
So something more on the sativa side but lower flower time... preferably 10 weeks max.

Maybe later I will clear the rest of my exwifes crap out the closet and grow them in there... they shouldn't smell up my clothes right? I wouldn't think so.

Anyhow, time to hit that loud and crash.

Haha thanks! Yea it wasn't too hard to mod at all and its pretty huge... wouldn't look out of place in any basement with some crap stacked on top of it. Too bad I don't have a basement
