DS' newbie closet grow

Greetings RIU!

This is my first grow and I'll try to keep a log of some kind :)
Also any advice, suggestions or discussion is always welcome.

I don't have any big name brands where I live and had to rely on something what I picked from department store.
On the label says organic soil contains top soil, peat, dolomite lime and has ph 6.5. I mixed it with perlite and i hope it's good quality and won't give me any problems on the long run.
Gonna water with tap water (small town and I think it doesn't have any chloride in it) which has ph 7.2.
Gonna feed them with Bio Bizz Grow when veg and Bloom and Top Max when flowering.

I'm growing from seeds 3 fem Nirvana Snow Whites and 3 normal mixed free seeds from them (gonna kill off males) and I plan to do main-lining on them.

Grow space is self made closet 60x120x200 (2' x 4' x 6,5').
During the seedling phase I have them under 2x 45W cool white cfls and gonna put them under 400w hps during veg and to 600w hps in a cool tube when flowering.

Ventilation and odor control will be managed with 6' inline fan and carbon filter.

Gonna add pics in a moment.

I Think that's it for the moment.
Thanks for checking it out :)

Building the grow space, back side and doors missing at the time. Would have wanted to make the doors longer but had limited space between it and the bed.

Seedling's first days

At day 12 when first beans popped I planted all to bigger medium.

3 Snow Whites are growing really strong.
14 days old

2 of the mixed seeds are lagging a little and at one point I almost managed to kill them with underwatering, but thankfully they've came back to life, when i put them to bigger medium. They are looking a lot happier now too.

One of the mixed is still growing her first set of true leaves :( I hope she'll catch up to others.

The whole group under self made lamp.

Some few weeks older pics of my plants. I later found out I have tap water with ~500ppm, full of Ca and I guess it started to block out Mg and other nutrients. My 3 Snow Whites turned really yellow and I thought they're gonna die. Started to water them with distilled water mixed with a little epsom salt. Started to mist them with Mg solution aswell.

Tried LST on two randoms

And topped third The Late Bloomer

My babies are growing again after switching hard tap for distilled.

On snow whites older leaves are still yellow and I guess the old leaves wont be turning green again.
003.jpg 007.jpg 008.jpg

Stopped misting with mg sulfate, I guess this is the reason why sativa dom leaves went thin.

My topped sativa random

Gonna repot next week after payday to 5-10 liter pots.

Potted up on 13th april, and switched light to 600w but forgot to dim it from 400 to 600W. Now a week in new pots and few days under stronger light my ladies are flushing with energy. So awesome to see in the morning how much they've grown overnight.
My problem was I guess too strong tap water full of Ca, now I'm diluting it with distilled. ~1/5 tap and mix 1/2tsp epsom salt. At the moment stopped feeding, since new soil seems to have plenty of nutrients.

Hey that's ok!! Also an easy solution would just be to let ur tap water sit out for like 24hrs n the chlorine will evaporate, problem solved without having to buy jugs of water. I love your little grow box and ur make shift lighting system, really nice how u can raise it or lower it so easily. Well done! They're looking good!

A little update

1 week until I'll switch to 12/12. Really impressed with Snow White's vigor, overall health and lack of problems with them. Can't wait to do smoke test.

These sensitive sativa dominant randoms are clawing I guess it's from root bound. Tried root pruning on the biggest. Gonna find out how she liked it. Also I think I'm having some Fe deficiency, top of the plants are lighter than older leaves. Guess I'll try if it helps to spray iron sulfate.

Thanks :) have to improve it after this or next run with sliding doors. Kind of annoying to reach plants on the back at the moment.

Happy Mother's Day!

A little update.
One of the biggest randoms turned out to be male so i had to take take it out.
Started to feed them bloom nutes as well, I'm giving them with half the strenght according to bioblizz all-mix feeding chart.
So this week one watering I gave them 0,5ml/L bio-bloom and 0,5ml/L top max. Next watering I gave them 0,5ml/L grow. I think I'll keep feeding them this way alternating between bloom+top max and grow. Also switched to collecting rain water, buying jugs of distilled got annoying and didn't want to spend 4€ every watering. Plants don't seem to notice the difference. At some point during the flowering I'll springle epsom salts on top of soil to keep Mg available.

One of the randoms seems to be really fast finisher.

Wild guess is that it's AK-48

The other one is totally different and still have preflowers.

Snow Whites have started to stretch a little aswell during last few days
041.jpg 040.jpg
This one is in smaller pot that's why she's shorter aswell.
038.jpg

What I've learned this far is to use bigger pots and right before flowering to pot up aswell.
Gonna do some work on grow space tomorrow aswell, gonna move cables and ballast to the wall to clear some floor space due safety incase of water spills. Also will be better to reach aswell incase I wanna plug/un-plug something.
Also I should make diy CO2 generator.

If you made the switch to hydroponics next run you wouldnt have to worry about pot size. you can grow 5' monsters in 2 gallon ebb&flow buckets no problem. the diy co2 generator with hydroponics would make for explosive growth not to mention one bad ass compact grow.

Yeah, I've been thinking about ebb & flow or dwc buckets. I think I'll get another in soil under my belt before makeing the switch. One thing I'm scared about are power cuts, had one week ago for like 5 damn hours due some big grid failure. Some powerful computer UPS'es should help from total disaster tho.

I actually had to remove all my plants from their dwc environment and relocate them to my upatairs bathroom for about 4hr so i could spray insecticide. They never skipped a beat, never started to droop

Oh nice good to hear from first hand experience. There's lots of scare talk about hydro, that even a hour may finish plants off.

Hydroponics is only as complicated as you make it. A properly set up ebb&flow can give you amazing results and if you have space for a big reservoir you could go 2-3 weeks before you'd have to change the reservoir just keep the ph in good range.
this was the girls' room for 4 hours

4 weeks in 12/12.

Had some heat issues, temperatures wanted to scale to 30-33° C (86-92° F) and I couldn't raise the light anyhigher either so I switched back to 400W.

With high heat and bad drainage I managed to burn one SW with overfeeding.Leaf edges got quite crispy but it seemed to stop for the moment. Oh well you live and learn.

Some progress pics:
The two random girls are incredible stretchers. Can't see any frosting on buds, hopefully I haven't messed them up and I can get something from them.

The best looking Snow White.

Forgot to take pics of others, will do later or tomorrow when I'll do next watering.

Took last plant down a week ago and didn't want to update until dried weight is known.

From 3 Snow Whites i got 43g, Randoms gave 32g and 43g. So added up it's 118g.
Snow whites were covered with frostings and smelled real nice, the randoms didn't have much but still better than the grass what is sold here.

At the end I battled with heat issues to keep it 27°c , will make some tune up's to improve air flow and be more confident with plant training- topping, supercropping when necessary. I should do supercropping on the stretchi randoms to reduce height issues. Also bigger pots.

Also I plan after next grow to make completely new closet to replace the one I've got. What I want is to have sliding doors and make it with 2 floors with veg and flower areas.

Here we go for round 2.
Planted seeds on 19th of July and seeds popped on 22nd and 23rd.
Unfortunately out of 7 seeds only 2 have popped. 1 Snow white and 1 random. Did some digging on the other seeds yesterday and they might come to life still. Not gonna throw others away yet.

7 day old seedlings, one of them grew so powerful tap root in few days that it was coming out of starter pot's bottom. So I decided to pot up it.
