This is Australia's cost but include our medicine subsidy (the majority of drugs are govt subserdoized. My blood pressure tablets- Perindopril +Amlodipine for eg are $20 for 30 ( a months supply) and I recon the costs of running the hospitals as well.

"Expenditure increased from $4,276 per person in 2001–02 to $6,230 in 2011–12. ... includes the costof medications not provided through hospital funding"

We do have the problem of an aging population as well..

China has been working hard on Heath reform BTW. Approx 70% of the cost is govt paid and they are spending LOTS of money on improving there system with the new reforms.

its not doing to bad..largest growing middle class in the world. 2nd largest economy and the worlds largest trading partner and a govt spending huge amounts of money in an attempt to give all of its citizens free end to user health care.

China has seen a few type's of Governments come and go and if America doesn't invade and destroy it like they tend to do it will see more types of Governments.

I do have to mention though that some hospitals that desire additional money to purchase equipment not included in their budgets do things like fund raising and home lotteries to fill the gap in their budgets. For example a hostpital might only have one CT scanner and they will fund raise to purchase a second one to reduce wait times.
