Fridge Grow 175w MH with CFLs

I don't do soil so I can't tell you about the transplanting... but I can tell you about what I just went through with light and roots.... even the tiniest littlest light, not even direct light will cause the roots to dramatically not grow.

You can see for yourself in my 1.2 journal. I have my clones under less than 60w of floros, not very powerful light, and I had the roots shaded, but even the weak light reflecting off the dark shelf the plants were in, were enough to cut growth. When I covered the reservoir completely the roots grew an inch overnight. The hydro helped... I don't think you'd get that growth in soil, but I do think that even the sideways light that gets through those semi opaque containers is stunting your root growth... and from what I understand the roots are very important in determinite almost all aspects of growth and yeild.

So.... you might want to consider either covering those, or doing a two layer thing if you still want to watch the roots. On my little reservoirs I left part uncovered to watch the roots... I just put some paper in front of the opening when I'm not looking.

Good luck with the company, haha.

Very solid advice Jig, much appreciated. I think I will go buy some construction paper tonight and make some sleeves for my 1gal pots to slide into. That way I can still look at the roots when I want.

As far as the company goes, I wont need luck, seeing as to how my company is bringing me some nice genetic seeds :) They are comming in town to visit and check up on me, you could call this person my "mentor" of sorts, so it should be a great weekend!! 1 more hour of work and its officially here, woohoo!!!

OK, so a quick but extremely exciting update. Long story short my company brought me a very very nice present, or should i say presents. Not only did I receive 16 Diesel Ryder Auto flowering seeds, and 20+ Apollo 11/Green Giant seeds, but I was blessed with 3 30 day old Diesel Ryder plants. 2 of the plants are female, and 1 male so i can pollinate the females and have MANY more seeds. I have moved plant 6 & 7 out of the cab & back into the fridge, and all 3 new Diesels are in the cab now with my 6 bagseed seedlings. The plan is to get temp & odor 100% under control in the cab as is, let the male pollinate the 2 females, then kill him & donate a few of the bagseed seedling, kill the rest and replace them with 6 Diesel Ryder seelings. These plants flower right around 3 weeks, and seed to harvest is 8-10 weeks. The plants will only get about 1-1.5ft tall. Now for some pictures!

Here are a couple pictures of the plants the day I received them. Considering the fact that they spent over 12 hours in a box in the back seat of a warm vehicle they looked great. Transplanting was obviously much needed. Here are the ladies, Regina on the left and Carmen on the right.

And here's Chuck, I figure since he is giving me seeds to grow many more little Diesels, he is worthy of a name.

I decided to transplant the females into some 1gal containers the day after eceiving them, but I left the male in the 16oz cup. He doesnt need to get any bigger, when hes ready ill just shake him over the plants and get rid of him. Here is a pic of the roots on Regina, I made sure to break them up a bit at the bottom before transplanting.

Here they all are in the cab after putting them in some bigger pots. The 2 outter bulbs are 26w 2700K and the 2 inners are 26w 6500K for right now. The 3 healthiest bagseed seedlings in the cab will be donated to a friend and the other 3 will be destroyed :(

And now some closeup pics of the new bunch. First up is Regina

Heres Carmen, a CFL rested on her little top hairs for an hour or so, but they dont look too bad.

And of course Chuck, lookin healthy as ever & with MUCH more pollen sacs than yesterday.

So thats it for now, all 7 of my original batch are back in the fridge, all looking pretty great. Ill get some pics of them soon, I have 3 topped and 1 tied down and it looks awesome. i really cant wait to get some more Deisel seeds, for anyone that doesnt know, an auto flowering plant cannot be cloned, so keeping a stock of seeds is a necessity. These are some STAAANKY plants too lemme tell you! More updates soom

Thanks man, I always appreciate the support! I am very excited about these AF plants. They may be all I grow after my larger ladies are finished. I switched to 12/12 in the fridge as of today, so once the lights come back on tomorrow Ill try and snap some pics, the growth has been WILD. I also switched the lights to 20/4 in the cab with the DR autoflowers.

I am still fiddling with my cabinet, and my fan that came in isnt setup yet because my dumbass bought the wrong adapter at radioshack. Guess thats what happens when radioshack hires 20yr old hot college girls that dont know SHIT about electronics. And of course I already cut the end off so no refund for me, fuckin $22 downt the toilet.

I did, however, set the lights up a bit different for now. I put in a 42w 2700K bulb in the middle socket, and Y splitters in the outter vertical sockets each with 2 26w 2700K CFLs in them. I have the ladies under the Y adapters and the male towards the front of the cab.....hell, lemme just go take a picture since the lights are on.................................................................OK here's a couple pics of the new light setup, I think this will work out much better. What do you guys think?

Once I get the new fan installed and heat/smell issues under control I will try to get 1 or 2 more 42w 2700K CFLs in there, as well as 6 DR seedlings. Till then, Ill just wait till ol Chuck is ready to pollinate them Ill sprinkle some pollen allover the 2 females. I will hopefully start the new batch of DRs shortly before or after I pollinate.

More pics of the fridge grow real soon

DAY 33

Plant Stage (Fridge): Flower [Day 3]
Plant Stage (Cabinet): Autoflower [Day 36]
Light Cycle (Fridge): 12/12
Light Cycle (Cabinet): 20/4
Lights (Fridge): 175w 4200K Metal Halide, 70w 2000K HPS, 2x68w 2700k CFLs, 2x30w 2700K CFLs, 2x26w 6500K CFLs
Lights (Cabinet):
4x26w 2700K CFLs, 1x42w 2700K CFL
Medium (All Plants):
3 Parts Sunshine Mix, 1 Part Pearlite
Ferts (All Plants): 28 drops of Schultz 10-15-10 per gallon every other watering.
Strain: 10 Unknown Bagseed + 3 Diesel Ryders (2 Female & 1 Male)

OK I have been awake for a long time and Im ready to go to bed, so lets just get this update started right with some pictures!! I will add descriptive captions to each one. First up, the fridge girls:

Trying to keep the canopy even here as much as possible. You can see the 2 plants that got fried a bit up front. The one on the right took the biggest hit. Its hard to see the football sized 68w CFLs in the picture, but I have 2 in there now.

Here is plant # 7. the one got burned the worst. This was my runt, I had topped her and she was doing so awesome just before this happened. The CFL fried all of the newest growth completely. Still looks good though everywhere else lol.

Here's plant #3, she didnt get burned too bad but enough to kill a few leaves and some new growth. Still a nice, tall, healthy lookin lass!

Now here is my pride and joy as of now. I thought I had lost plants 1 & 2 a while back due to some spray paint poisoning but man did they bounce back. This is plant 2, she has been under LST the longest and it has really paid off. Here is a pic from the top, you can see all the lovely possible budsites.

And here she is from the side. Lots of foliage on this one so it was hard to get a real clear shot of the stem from soil to tip but you can still see some of it.

And here is Plant 1, she has been under LST for about 3 days now. Not even a week ago it was a droopy, flacid plant. Even the base of the stem was soft and I thought it was almost dead, looks great now, definitely stunted though.

Here we have (from left to right) plants 8, 4, & 6. Plants 8 & 4 are currently my tallest at just over 10 inches fromt he soil. Plant 6 on the right was topped at the same time as plant 7 that got burned real bad, she has really bushed out and looks awesome.

OK this picture may seem kinda off topic and...well...it is but hear me out. If you live in the US, particularly in the south & midwest, you may recognize this fine specimen. This is a brown recluse spider. I just wanted to show off this picture I took of one that shows the violin marking on their back used to identify them, in case anyone could never make it out before or didnt know how to identify one. It was chillin out in the garage, so I killed him to prevent an accidental bite at some time. I appreciate spiders but I always kill these if I see them.

OK now on to the cabinet gals (and guy). Its been a pretty rough transition for ol Regina, Carmen & Chuck. They seem to finally be adapting to their new home & pots. The buds on the ladies are developing faster now and I cant keep ol Chuck from growing even in that little 16oz cup. A couple pollen sacs have bursted open, and the wife & I sprinkled a little pollen over a couple buds by hand. I will let more sacs mature & burst, give it one more hand pollination and we should be good. The 3 seedlings in the background are the same unknown strain as in the fridge, no good pics of em though.

Lets start off with Regina (aka "The Wife's Plant"). She is the taller of the 2 and her side buds are further out from the main stem than her short fat sister.

Here is a closeup so you can see some of the pollen that fell on the leaf. We got most of the pollen on the white hairs where it belongs, but it wasnt an exact science or anything haha.

Here is Regina's Top bud. The foliage around the top bud isnt nearly as frosty as her sister's but it still looks delicious.

And now my short, fat little Carmen. She should end up being a picture perfect bud on a stick here in a month or so. It seems that she had a few less bud sites but the buds she does have seem to be growing fast!

Here is Carmen's top bud, lookin a little frosty, mmmmmm.

Good ol' Chuck. Its really too bad that male cannabis plants arent worth anything other than pollen because he is healthy as a horse. Hes almost too tall for how high the shelf is but oh well, Ill be putting him to rest in a couple days after the deed is done.

Heres something you dont see a lot of, sac porn! Hmm, all of a sudden i feel kind of....odd that I took these pictures. Almost like the gay porn of weed, haha jk!!

And heres the whole Diesel Ryder family as of now. I will be holding off on starting more DR seeds until a new cab (that is still being brainstormed) is built and ready to grow.

A friend and I will be gutting a large mini fridge and hanging a cooltubed 150w HPS & 105w 6500K CFL to start up a Diesel Ryder SOG soon. We are going to do math, draw, plan, read....you know, all the stuff I SHOULD have done before starting the first time haha!! Let me know what you guys think, and as always thanks for stoppin by!!

Peace

I was expecting your plant to be charged to a cinder but it isn't all that bad - the plant will def recover completely and throw great buds i'm sure. (I actually burn plants alot - too lazy to trim them whent hey get close to lights - oops) Make sure you remove that male right as the sacs open. Save the open sacs and you can use the bag method or paintbrush method to pollinate. Really don't want to much free floating pollen in the grow cab though or itll continue to seeds plants months afterwards. Alil jealous, would love to fuck around with some autos to put outside. For inside I don't really understand the appeal - yes they stay small but so does a regular plant if flowered early and regualr plants need less light :) But if I had a boatload of auto seeds god damn I'de be putting lil lants everywhere outside. Your babies are lookin great, keep it up!

very cool! i was thinking about using a mini fridge for a clone box
Yeah I have seen a lot of people do it very effective with 150w HPS bulbs as well as 200+ watt CFLs. I saw one guy yeild 3.5oz dry off ONE plant that was super scrogged. He was using a 150wHPS only.

Thats very exciting, she is definitely growing by leaps & bounds so hopefully the same happens with me :)

Yeah I think the reason the burn was so bad in my mind is that I ALMOST took a pic of the luscious new growth the day before it happened and didnt. It truly fried probably 2 inches or more off the top, but oh well it will pull through.
I will remove the male as sooon as the majority if the sacs open, I need to read into preserving the pollen I think, or just save a male every once in a while.
Youre right about the AF, the small size is great but the fact that 20hrs of light is optimal kinda sucks for heat & electricity. I just really like the idea of growing 9+ in a mini fridge without having to train them to stay short, or deprive them of part of their "natural" life cycle. I may just use my apollo 11/green giant seeds though, because the thought of a mother + clones is very tempting. Not having to catch the males every time would be nice. And man do these DRs STINK!

DAY 38

Plant Stage (Fridge): Flower [Day 8]
Plant Stage (Cabinet): Autoflower [Day 41]
Light Cycle (Fridge): 12/12
Light Cycle (Cabinet): 20/4
Lights (Fridge): 175w 4200K Metal Halide, 70w 2000K HPS, 2x68w 2700k CFLs, 2x30w 2700K CFLs, 2x26w 6500K CFLs
Lights (Cabinet):

Ferts (All Plants): 28 drops of Schultz 10-15-10 per gallon every other watering.
Strain: 10 Unknown Bagseed + 3 Diesel Ryders (2 Female & 1 Male)

OK another quick picture update. i spent most of my night watering, LST training, & taking pictures so Ill try and get this over with quickly haha.

Lets start with the fridge. The same CFLs that fell before fell for the 3rd time. I finally realized that it was the adhesive left behind from the duct tape I peeled off that was failing. I cleaned off all the adhesive with goo gone and rubbing alcohol & remounted another hook. No problems since but a bulb laid on plant 7, the same one that's been fried before for a couple hours, no major damage. Here is a shot of the canopy, they are real close to showing sex. I will take individual pics as they start to show.

Here's an underside shot so you can get a look at the light setup. Above the window are the HIDs, a 175w MH and a 70w HPS. Plant 4 in the middle is about 15" tall for a height reference. Plants 4 & 8 have been trained over for a couple days now. They would easily be 20" tall if they were allowed to grow straight up, I couldn't have that considering my smallest LST plant is only 4 inches tall. Its hard enough as is keeping the canopy even.

Ok now to the cabinet. Regina and Carmen have not grown hardly any taller than when I received them, but the roots have already started making laps around the bottom of their new containers and their buds have been swelling. It smells so sweet in the cab, and If you look close at the bud shots you can see a couple seeds starting to form!! Very exciting stuff for me, I am hoping for about 50 seeds total or less but we'll see. I would be happy with a 1/2oz total dry bud, but it may end up being less. So first up is Carmen, here's a full body shot :hump:

And her beautiful top bud, look closely to see the seeds forming. The seeds are easiest to see on Carmen.

And the taller sister Regina. Not as many seeds forming as of now, but each bud site has been growing at a wonderful pace. I would say she is maybe 1.5 inches taller than when I received her 1.5 weeks ago.

And Reginas top bud, not as fat as Carmens but probably a little taller. I promise Ill try and remember to get a lighter in there for size reference next time.

So I got the mini fridge and we almost have all of the foam insulation scrapped out. For anyone thinking about using a mini fridge, if you plan to take the insulation out prepare for some painstaking shitty work. It took 2 of us a combined total of probably 3 hours to scrape all that shit out of the fridge & door. I will get some pics of the new project soon, or maybe just start a new thread for it as a DIY or something. I have ordered the 150W HPS & ballast for about $60 after shipping, and a Soler & Palau TD-100x 100/135CFM 4" inline fan for $91 after shipping. Both should arrive at the middle to end of next week.

I'm thinking about 3 weeks (21-24 days) till harvest on Regina & Carmen, it should be very exciting, it will be my first ever bowl (or possibly blunt :hump:) of my own bud. Here's hoping everything goes wonderful, you have all been great and I appreciate all the comments.

I'm excited for you on this.... talk about a small step for man, but a giant leap forward for your pot smoking ass. I smoked my first gram, but I picked it too early and have to wait a couple more weeks for the rest of the harvest.

Mad props, fridge master.

Lookin good! Once you harvest your seeds you should have a great smoke to go along with em. I"m thinking that I really need to order some auto seeds - would love to breed a huge batch of seeds to scatter outdoors. Perhaps that will be my aim for next season. How many of whose little guys you think you can fit in the fridge?

Haha, I plan to pick a popcorn bud or 2 early as well. Thanks for the kind words but I am in no way a fridge "master". At least not yet :P Wanna see some awesome fridge growing then check out FreezerBoy's grows over on icmag. Thanks for the rep btw!!!

Yeah AF is for sure the way to go for an outdoor grow. Id say in the wild most AF strains top out at about 18 inches or so, MAYBE 20. I plan on using a lot of seeds for this, maybe 12, 6 in 2 different areas Ive been thinking about.

As far as how many I could fit in the fridge, I did the math a while back for a SOG grow using 1/2 gal juice cartons and I could fit 42 in the big fridge or 12 in the smaller one. I just dont know if thats what I wanna do though. A 4-6 plant scrog is more appealing to me, thats 36-38 less plants to care for haha. My thoughts for now are to start 6 Diesel Ryder and 6 of my Apollo11/Green Giant seeds in the new mini fridge next weekend. Once I have a mother from the A11/GG I will keep her in the fridge under 20/4 along with all of the DRs. The DRs will flower, the mother will not, and it should leave me some room to veg more A11/GG when needed. Nothin set in stone yet but as of now that seems to be the most efficient way to do things. This way I could scrog 4 or so A11/GG in the mini fridge and get a screen FULL of buds instead of a bunch of sticks. Only time will tell how it all unfolds though

Till next time

Oh and I almost forgot...

I took a peek in the fridge last night and a quick peek ended up turning into 3 hours of light adjusting, plant training, etc. In that time I came to the conclusion that I am 90% sure I have 1 female and 2 males identified. The female is Plant 6 and the Males are (of course) my tallest #8 and my wicked LST bush #2 :( Hopefully Im wrong but Im pretty sure Im not, little clusters of balls forming allover them :(

The lights should kick back on any minute but I wont be home for a couple hours or more, If I see anymore for sure signs Ill give an update. I am very excited to gain some room after ditching a few males, but if Plant 6 ends up being my only female MAN I would be pissed haha!

You'll have at least 2 girls for sure. And like you said, just means more room for the ladies.

Funny how a peak can turn into 3 hours like that.

DAY 41

Plant Stage (Fridge): Flower [Day 11]
Plant Stage (Cabinet): Autoflower [Day 44]
Light Cycle (Fridge): 12/12
Light Cycle (Cabinet): 20/4
Lights (Fridge): 175w 4200K Metal Halide, 70w 2000K HPS, 4x68w 2700k CFLs
Lights (Cabinet):
1x42w 2700K CFL, 2x30w 2700k CFLs, 2x26w 2700K CFLs
Medium (All Plants):
3 Parts Sunshine Mix, 1 Part Pearlite
Ferts (All Plants): 28 drops of Schultz 10-15-10 per gallon every watering.
Strain: 6 Unknown Bagseed (3 female & 3 too young to tell) + 2 Diesel Ryders (Pollinated Females)

So I did some more inspecting and the official word is in: 4 males and 3 females. I am 100% positive on 2 females, and the other one im pretty darn sure. 4 of them are definitely males though. I have lots of pics so Ill just get into them, if you think I have sexed one of the males wrong please let me know. As of now they are under the fridge shelf as to free up some canopy room.

I spent a good part of the day rearranging the lights in the fridge. After a stop by the ol home depot earlier today I now have 4 of the 68w 2700K CFLs to work with. I set them all up in the fridge in a way that no 2 fixtures meet causing one corner to be less lighted than the others. heres what it looks like from below:

And heres how it looks from tin front of the fridge, I tried to get all the CFLs hanging at the same height, as Im leaning towards the idea of putting a screen up and scrogging the hell out of my little girls.

OK now for the male preflower porn haha! Please feel free to let me know if you disagree with any of these being males. I have sticks in each picture representing the plant number, so no descriptions.

Here are the same 4, in a lineup. My largest plant number 8 is in the back, it was as disappointing as plant 2 for sure, they were my 2 favs for a while. This is officially the last time they will have the privilege of sitting on the shelf in the fridge. I will wait another day or so and toss them all out if I still see nothing but balls. If I get a herm I may try to find a home outside for her/him.

OK, so that leaves plants 3, 4 & 6 as the females. Now that they have shown sex I feel they have officially earned real names. A friend gave me a good idea for naming, which was to do it like they name hurricanes, alphabetically. So say hello to Alice (3), Beatrice (4), & Claudia (6). I was getting VERY frustrated trying to hone in on the little white hairs so the pics arent the best. Alice & Claudia are the only 2 that actually have white hairs, but Beatrice is showing absolutely NO signs of being male and looks much more like the other 3 girls at each node.

Hairs on Alice

Hairs on Claudia

And some solo pics. I figured each girl deserved her own solo pic, so I could show off some of the training Ive put them through.

Big mamma Alice here. I waited until she was about 11 inches tall to start LST, which I wouldn't do again but it worked out ok.

Here's Beatrice, another one that I did some LST to later than I should have. I should have gotten a pic of the stem but this side shows the bud sites better.

And heres ol Claudia. This is one of the 2 that I topped when they were real short & stuck them in the cabinet for a few days. She was the first to show sex.

In other news, of the 6 bagseeds I started I said that I would donate 3 to a friend and kill the others. Well...I did give 3 to a friend, and I think they're getting eaten alive outside actually. Now the other 3, that's a different matter all together. Lets just say they have taught me a valuable lesson, which is this: never, EVER again use Jiffy pots or pellets. These seeds came from the same bud as all my large fridge ladies and they are exactly 2 weeks old. I will be using 16oz party cups from now on, they work excellent! I also recommend using a clear one then putting it inside a red one to block light from the roots. Its pretty cool to be able to pick the clear cup up out of the red one and peek at the roots whenever. I decided to top all 3 and throw them in the fridge under 12/12. They are: Cuatro, Cinco & Seis.

And here's a shot of the 3 females & 3 youngsters in the fridge. The amount of light Im able to get on each plant is amazing now compared to when 7 large plants were crammed in there. I really need to turn this into a scrog asap. In fact just after I post this I will start looking up some info :)

Not a whole lot has changed with my other ladies, Carmen & Regina. They've both gotten a bit fatter & denser, and the seeds are starting to swell but still not much if any vertical growth. I suppose I could lower the shelf or something but Im not too worried about it. I dont like getting CFLs too far from plants due to the amount of light lost per inch vs. HIDs.

Carmen

Regina

The cab, it stays open all day long in a back room just so it doesn't overheat. The max ambient temp is usually 82, but with the doors close it gets up to 90+ over time. Since its on 20/4 Im just leaving the doors open till the mini fridge is ready.

And the newest "soon to be" additions to the family, 6 Diesel Ryder and 6 Apollo11/Green Giant Seeds germinating as I type this. I have cleverly put the 6 Diesel Ryder seeds n a "D" shape and the Apollo11/Green Giant seeds in an "A" shape so I dont get them mixed up HAHA! A couple have cracked but Ill wait till tomorrow to plant them in hopes that the rest crack overnight. Im very excited to start all of these. They will be in the cab for hopefully no more than a week or 2 then into the mini fridge as soon as its ready.

The new fan will be here Wednesday and I haven't gotten shipment confirmation yet on the HPS. I think the plan is to use the new fan in my large fridge then put my 80CFM fan in my mini fridge so that the large fridge will have a better chance of staying cool in the summer. That's all for now, I will either be posting lots more pics once the new ones sprout or Ill get busy or lazy & forget for a while who knows :)

Let me know how you think things are looking for me. I am still, and always will be open to any criticism. I have learned much from this site and I can always learn more!

Haha that is a little trippy. The names were 100% randomly picked, I picked Carmen and my wife picked Regina.

I pollinated them 2 or 3 times within 2 days. Once by hand picking off pollen sacs, once by leaving the male in overnight with a fan on and then once again by hand before tossing him out. I think it may have been overkill but I figure the more seeds I get the longer it will be until I have to pollinate some more :)

Ill take some good pics of the swollen seed pods forming as soon as I can, looks pretty neat.
