Intelligent people don't need religions to make conscious and moral decisions. Many psychologists have done studies proving that people who tend to believe in a faith are less intelligent. Religion was created as a means to control less intelligent people within their societies. People who believe in faith are easier to get them to conform to a system, more gullible and don't tend to be analytical or data-driven thinkers. 48 of the top 50 world's biggest givers and people who donate to charities are atheists. The biggest company in the world is the catholic church and they have donated minimal amounts compared to the wealth they have stock piled. The most funny part about it all is that most religious doctrines mock their own believers by referring them to sheep or flocks of sheep. And most of those poor, weak minded people don't even know they are being mocked by a system they have put so much faith into. But once you become a shepherd, you realize it's all bullshit.

The owner of Austin's The Oasis did the same thing when his restaurant burned down if you remember. He even opened up his house to staff parties and hosted weddings. He continued to pay his staff while rebuilding.
Now that's building team loyalty. I doubt if there's one progressive that would go to bat for their own like that.

Religion is a means of individual and social control intelligent or not, yes, and it is necessary to provide order and spiritual comfort in every society. Each religion's credos or laws define the particular society's laws. For example, the basic criminal and civel laws of America are based upon the Ten Commandments - thou shalt not kill, thou shall not steal, etc. Christianity's use of fear and guilt (heaven and hell, shame) is a necessary means of control.... developing a moral conscience, ethics, how you treat yourself and others.

And who will define society's moral codes? I'm an agnostic but truly admire the hundreds of daily fellowship deeds and hard work of Christians building homes, helping out during nature's disasters like the local Wimberley floods when so many lost lives and life long possessions..... churches who provided food, clothing, lodging assistance and medical care. Soup kitchens, Salvation Army..... Happens every day, everywhere. You can't stand there with a straight face and say Christians have never done anything positive. Simply not true.
No, they're not out on some street corner handing out joints to losers if that's what you mean.

6 & 8 are the only ones reflected in law, and that's not because they're in the Bible, it's because they're common sense

America is infact the world's first secular nation, distinctly different than other nations for the exact opposite reason you seem to believe; America was not founded on religious principles
