Germinating under HIDs

Do any of you germinate under HIDs?

What technique do you use?

I have seen a screen put in front of the HID for the first 5 days after germination.

I have also seen the HIDs at a distance of 6 feet and then lowered everyday 4-6 inches.

What successful techniques do you use?

I have done it under a 1000 watt mh...I just kept the light like 4 feet above them and it worked great...no stretching at all...I think because it is such a powerful spectrum so they dont have to stretch for light at all....

I use a dual-spectrum (400w MH and 600w HPS) throughout the entire grow and germinate using paper towel method then under the HIDs they go. I keep the light about 4.5 feet away and up they come... here is an example at 32 days old.

If you are focused on the germination specifically, sorry for posting. But they go into the system as soon as they crack (or about a 1/4 inch of taproot). So if you are interested in newly germinated also - here is an example.

Nice info guys..

hey email.... how many plants is that..

Is that the GH rain forest system?

cheers
It is three plants and yes it is the rainforest 66 - the thread is kind of long but my journal (in my sig) is very detailed and has pics from seed (feminized PPP) to harvest if you are willing to wade through it.

thanks email!

You had both lights on during germination and for the entire grow?

what was the final yield per plant?

thanks

yes both lights were on through the whole grow and I ended up with a few oz shy of a lb so about 3-5 oz per plant i guess (it is all for friends and personal use) ...

i wouldent its to hot and would dry out the pots very quick. i
hey bwinn.. I know this is conventional wisdom.. "wait 5-10 days after germination before introducing HIDs... BUT more and more i am seeing HIDs used for clones and germination...

I think a LIGHT MOVER wth a 1000 watt MH over clones has proven great success..

My unproven theory is it is less stressful to start seedlings under HIDs (far away) than it is to start with floros and then introduce them to HIDs. Like starting seedlings indoors and then planting them outside without any introduction to UV light is stressful.

Our unproven theories clash.I demand a fight to the death. My unproven theory is that the plants seem to be much healthier under flos, and as long as I let them get 3 nodes + before moving them under the HID, I see no ill effects.

I have always used floros for germination.I get them less then an inch away from the light for a week or 2 then under the 1000mh and the nodes are so close it's ridiculus on this grow. Approx. 5-6 nodes @ 4" high!! Once under the mh they love it,you can tell.Last grow was all 1000hps start to finish.Fluffy buds so am going mh for 2-3 weeks flower then hps till a week or two from finish to limit stretch and compact the flowers more dencely.Showgirl

I have thus far not had any choice but to put my seedlings under HID. I have used paper towel method as well as germed in rockwool and then transplanted to soil. I have had few problems. The only thing that has been tricky is keeping clones healthy. I don't have a separate veg room (until I move) and have a very small space; so, it is difficult to keep them far enough away from my 400W HPS. They try to suck all the life out of themselves before roots can even think about forming. I have remedied this by keeping them in shadows, and they seem to be coming along.
I do get a little bit of unwanted stretch on fresh sprouts; but they seem to fill out well once they get going.

Oh, and Email, is that a bottle of Fullers ESB? I love that beer.

check out my grow, 1000w hps from seed to day 3 flower.
i had the light about 4' away. they where in a tray with dome, and a thin lace table cloth on top.

just got some t5s 24" 4 bulb, 96w and built a cloning box. i have 3 clone of the plants mention above. 2 seedling about 3 days old of bubblelicious and 2 of skunk #1. also have a chronic about 2week old. anyway i guess what i am saying is that i almost have a test sample of what your looking for.

this is my first grow so i really have no idea what the progress should look like. i do know that the node spacing with the hps is crazy. almost to bushy but what the hell would i know. it just look like all the under brush is fighting for light.
