Getting Ready to Start Cloning, How Important is a Heating Mat?

I see 2 sides to this, alot of people use a heating mat under the tray with a dome, alot of people don't. Just wondering how important it is or if it's even necessary? Obviously it's been done without a heating pad, but how much easier does it make things?

I've never used one. I use a 10 gal fish tank with saran wrap over the top, get roots 7-12 days or so. It stays warm cause its in my tent, avg temp of 85 inside the tank. I would imagine it would be hard to get them too root if its too cold.

Ya the room they are in never gets below 75-78, So ya, Gonna try cloning next week. I'll see how it goes, any tips are welcome also.

I use coco that I put inside the hollow jiffy cubes you can get at wally world. I use the technaflora rooting hormone, although anything with a good amount of IBA will work. i have used powders also, seems to work just as good. Alternatively you can make rooting hormone out of willow branches.

This is what I use for a heating 'pad'; I have a 18 watt T8 self contained fixture.
I put any seeds I have or clones in ziplock bags with rockwool and place them right against the fixture to keep it warm.

Works amazingly well;better then a dome without a real heating pad; great on space too!

But you can use any water-bed heating pad to do the same job as an expensive grow pad; I think they literally are the same kind of mats though. Make sure you buy a new one though; as they usually use the same heating mat as grow mats; just with an external probe and same higher temp control.

They are very useful as they basically make your plants grow quicker off the bat; germ faster and ensure survival by providing best conditions.

I advise against a waterbed heater. I almost had a fire with one. The heating mats designed for under plants dont get as hot and shut off quicker than a waterbed heater because the temp probe is built in. As far as cloning with a heater I have had about the same results with and without one as long as room temp stays 70-75. I average about 2/3 of what I cut in rockwool in dome. I just built a clone machine to mist my cuttings and will post about succes or failure rate in a few days on that method as well.

People try to over do stuff a lot on here it seems like.

Just cut the clone you're wanting to take, dip in rooting solution, put into starter soil cube things if you use soil. Put under fluros in a tray holder thing. Water whenever the medium dries out a little bit, not too dry though. Water with good pH water with just some rooting nutrient helper. It'll root within a week or so. Put into dirt.

That's my method, simple as can be. No domes, pads, or anything like that. 99% effective for me, I have a really strong strain though, so maybe that's why it's so easy for me. Only lost 3 clones in 6 years of the same strain.

I use rooting powder by the way.

its not important as long as you can maintain a constant heat around 70 degress. humidity is the important thing.

It stimulates the root growth, I dont use a hydroponic heater - I use a small electric blanket (20 bucks) and I can get 8 propagation domes on it - works like a charm and I get roots in 6 days. Spay them 4 times a day with 4ml of Rizotonic to one ltr of carbonated water (CO2 is the fun bit...)

I thought of trying that with mine; good to know it works well.
Now we can sleep in grow rooms too while were at it.

Mine root just as fast, no blanket, domes, and watering with a gallon jug.

I really think some people do stuff just to make them feel better about it.

Hey wuts up slo? Yeah I have to agree with mygirls. Ur temps are optimum. Humidity IS key. But I'm lazy. I don't have a dome and I just mist a lot. I am going to tweak my cloning method a bit after reading Ed Rosenthals book but overall I still have a 95% success rate with cloning.

Got another question, I'll keep it in this thread. Can I take multiple clones from the Same branch of the mother plant? or do I want to just take the tips of each branch? Like I take a clone 4 nodes down from one branch. Then take another clone from that same branch 4 more nodes down?

i always take as many cutting from one branch.. u want at least 2 nodes in what ever your putting them into.. jiffy pots or rockwool.

yep it can and more. pending on the size of ur branch.. hope this helps..

Well ya, i got the cloning procedure down I think, read the grow bible on cloning, DL'd Jorge Cervantes ultimate grow vol 1, that had a cloning thing on the end of it. But nowhere does it say in my research that you should or should not use a heating pad or take more than one clone from a branch. Guess I was thinking that the clone would have an open wound so to speak from the previous clone lol

u only cut off each limb thats coming off the branch. make sure they at least 2 nodes to work with.. one node will work but 2 is better
