Going Vertical - 4x4 Tent

I'm excited for you man, my first "real" run with vertical was an eye-opening experience and an absolute blast. I still run horizontal occasionally as well (usually when I have extra plants that I don't have room for in the vert tent (as with that grow I linked you to as well as my current run) but for sheer efficiency it just can't be beat.
cheers bro, did you notice an increase in yield?

Put it to you this way...it's not that you will automatically go from, say, .5gpw to 1.5gpw if you go from horizontal to vertical with all other factors remaining the same. What vertical will afford you is a higher margin of error in terms of yield, and it will make it easier to get a higher yield with the same container size, media, etc. simply by virtue of the efficiency of the system and the amount of light that actually hits the plants when compared to a horizontal setup.

Not sure if I'm explaining that well or not, I feel like that doesn't make sense as I write it even though it makes perfect sense in my head.

Yeah that makes some sense. Shit if I even got .8 gpw I'd be happy as Larry.

How many plants do you think would run best taking into consideration they have another 5 1/2 weeks to veg. I was thinking of doing maybe 5?

Less is more with that long of a veg, I think you're spot on with 5 in that area...tystikk and other vert dudes may have other thoughts. I would space the plants out as though you have 6 total and that should leave plenty of room to work. I also recommend hanging the light with the type of ratcheted pulley hooks that you see me using in that photo I posted, since you can easily ratchet it up out of the way when you're working in there. You can buy multiple packs for cheap on Amazon, so get a bunch and use those to train any unruly larger colas that can't quite be anchored to the screen with zip ties. You can cut a piece of the screen to fit the ceiling and use that as an anchoring point for these.

One other suggestion that helped me a ridiculous amount -- take a bright fluoro of some sort (I prefer a nice 100w T5 if you have a spare) and put it at the top of the tent. Use that when you're working with the plants, as you will be blinded if you try to work in there with the big bulb on. Also, if you're using HPS (which I always have, but I'm curious to see your results with MH) it is nearly impossible to clearly see the important stuff -- pests, deficiencies, etc.

Cheers man. I have a few of those ratchets laying around.

Good idea about the lamp for the top when working.

Yeah I'm going to do 5. 4 is probably more right. Buy I always end up doing one more than I need lol

I'm only vegging with mh. I'm going to flower with hps

Haha funny I was just about to post about this.

I am thinking of just building a simple frame out of timber and just attaching that same sort of plastic gardening netting like In your thread in that link. :) same stuff I've been scrogging with for ages.

Was thinking of basically making it so I have 4 walls that are 1m (3.5 feet) each, then it gives me 10cm to play with them behind?

How much clearance do I need from the screen to the bulb?
You want about thirty inches or 75cm from trellis to lamp, assuming 1000W HPS run bare.

Re. the box fan below, run it blowing straight up around the lamp, on the low speed setting. Its mission is not velocity, just gentle air and heat exchange. The air is already warm, you're just helping it rise. To this end you really do not want a top on your tent and a small vent fan will not be sufficient.

Finally, develop a plan for handling a lot more humidity and transpiration than you're used to.

Excellent work with the vert, props!

I'm also of the less plants is more camp, however having an extra one is a blessing in case something bad happens.

Cheers man. So if I need that much space, will the 1000w be too much and maybe I should just run my 600w?

I understand about the box fan. Will be 6inch be sweet. I currently run my horizontal about 20 inches off the canopy at 25-27c (approx 78f).

I cant take the roof off as the smell will cause issues.

I'm going to need to think about the humidity. As it is a problem down these ways and the mrs will get shity if I air-condition my grow room and not the lounge lol. I might end up getting one of those little room portable aircons units and just connect it to outside.

Subbed up. I am doing something very similar. My first time trying vert as well.

2 WW crosses, 1 unknown strain I have been running for a bit and 1 "NL".

I just today got rid of 2 other plants, 6 is just too much in the 4x4 for me.
I am only using 3 of the 4 walls though. I also last minute changed my mind about horzontal and decided on trying out vert so all of my plants have been fimmed except the NL so got a lot of bush going on.

3.5gal Hempy buckets. 600w HPS, may add another 600w of hps of mh in the last half.

They have until next friday before I flip to flower. Vegging them now under 600w hps to try and get a bit more stretch out of them this final week.

I am considering using 3 walls for vert and the floor for horizontal on my next flower run. Might be able to squeeze in one scrogged bush... I'll have to figure out how Id install a fan on the floor or something..

anyways. good luck.

PS, whos WW and BB?

Awesome bro. Wwxbb from female seeds. Ie white widow x big bud haha

I was talking about doing three walls but think I have a way to almost do all 4. Time will tell.

Feel free to share anything you come across on your way that may help me :(

Looking good fellas. Can't wait to get these Silver Mountains going, I feel like I'm going to kill it this run with all this badass gear, all I have to do is stay out of the way of the magic and not fuck it up.

Clones are two and a half weeks old. :)

I have air-conditioning coming in a week. Heat is getting too much to handle at the moment and its only going to get worse next month. Both my veg and flower room are hitting 29-30c (86f). I don't care about the ones in veg. But my flower room I'd prefer lower. Could swap down to a 600w....
