I like that idea of trimming the clone fan leaves. I adjusted the water level. If that doesn't help i'll trim the bottom set.
As for pruning, my selection process for taking fan leaves is mostly based on if they are covering nodes or not. I found the small lower nodes would hit the bottoms of the fan leaves, smoosh up and grow slowly. Right now i'm trying to get it as branched out as possible in a small space since my space is limited. Taking fan leaves from around the new nodes allows them to have more energy instead of growing these mammoth fan leaves like I have seen happening with this gal. I also do not want any fan leaves extending into the center of my growing space around the stem because I don't want any condensation building up and causing any water problems with leaves. I would never go as extreme as your buddy. I only clear from crowded spaces where I know a branch will come in. When I go into flower I doubt any will be trimmed. Especially after reading those quotes you supplied.
Oh and to answer your question, I've experimented with many vegetables, bushes, trees and bonsai! I also have an unquenching desire to gain experience growing everything! This is my newest venture!
