How to bring out the purple?!?

You don't have to do a damn thing for some strains to turn purple. No cold needed if it's dominant in the genetics.

It's ridiculous to freeze your plants using ice or cold temps just to get them to turn purple. Much of the time all cold temps do is change the color of the fan leaves anyway.

Purple weed sucks for the most part. Very few purple strains are worth a shit.

Genetics.

Cold temps work a bit but not enough to compensate for the damage you’ll do. Chlorophyll degradation brought on by cold reveals the pigment (anthocyanins or others), but this will slow the rate your plant can photosynthesis.

I was going to make a post, sort of relative to this. Asking, about edibles made with cannabis high in anthocyanins, since it’s considered to be very healthy.

I'm another purple lover as the effect of a good pheno is my ideal for daytime toking and some of the most complex tastes I've sampled have come from purple buds. Like everyone's stressed, genetics is the biggest factor as they'll determine if it'll express purple colours and whether it needs cold weather to turn or if it's truly purple at any temp. Stellar Collision for example will show some purple/pink colours when flowered in mid to high 20's.

And turns a solid purple outdoors with cold nights. I've personally never noticed a significant lose in yield/quality from cold induced colours although my anecdotal experience is an apple to oranges comparison as growing indoors vs outdoors has too many other variables to make any meaningful comparison.

What I haven't seen anyone mention is the potential effect of light spectrum on colour expression. I haven't seen any studies around cannabis specifically but if you look at lettuce cultivation there's a clear relationship between spectrum and colour expression with strong blue lights bringing out more anthocyanins, which is how they get those nice red heads of boston lettuce on the grocery shelves. Which seems to play out with pot as there's often a lot more colours expressed under LED's then HPS. Which is another reason I plan to replace my 600w HPS with a 315 cmH, mostly for the higher efficiency and UVB output but I'm curious if more blue will bring the colour out of Stellar Collision.

Anthocyanin pigments can supposedly be brought on with near neutral ph / cooler temps ( lower 60’s ) .
However if the trait expresses anyways because of its parental lines then you should pretty much there.

IMO I don’t see the draw of purp strains …. Other than picture taking.
Totally agree. I bred IBL Durban X Banana Punch. Planted a couple and kept 1 female. Apparently the Purple Punch in the BP came through and it was the purplest of purples. Thrilled a couple of guys and I don’t understand why. The blacker it got the more excited they got.

That structure sure has a resemblance to PCK.
It is basically. I got the seeds for free, and they were marked as "Purple Kush", but it's basically PCK according to the breeder description, some weird Hungarian breeder. I got both green and purple varieties from the seeds. I crossed some males and females together and have hundreds of them now. I have a high THC indica hybrid (SR-71 Purple Kush x Gush Mints) that I crossed it to this summer, and will be collecting seeds soon.

I bet that's 100% ACE PCK reproduction and ACE got it from Cannabiogen and say so on their website.

The green pheno is better than the colored ones. At least in my opinion. It's a good strain. It's amazing how many people think this or that breeder is doing something special with their colorful weed but most of them are probably using PCK. Pretty much anything crossed with PCK will be colorful.

I went the other way and focused on the green pheno and bred the color out. The green pheno reminded me of some of the skunky bud we used to get in the early 80's. I've been working with it for years. It's one of the pillars of my foray into cannabis breeding.

They say you can't tell a strain from a picture but there may be exceptions. PCK is one of them.

I got a pretty good green pheno from my seedpack that I also pollinated and collected seeds from, because I had remembered seeing you say that the green phenos are better, so I wanted to preserve those genetics for my vault a bit. For this specific project, I'm really going for a unique purple kush though. I think the seeds from this resulting cross are going to be fire, and should increase the potency of the offspring quite a bit from the usual PCK.

Are you guys all really that serious? If you want purple, when your bud goes into flower, real flower, week 2, kick your phosphorus up to a 10-30-10, or even a 15-50-15. Hit it once, and again in 10 days, then drop back down to a 10-10-10 to even it off, as you'll have all the purple you want. Guaranteed. Just don't do it too soon, or too much.

I thought phosphorous deficiency is what causes purple.

I have purple and grow in living soil. No fertilizer at all since early Summer. I grow for myself so I don't care about purple, although this year I have lots of it.

Funny on how people fret about purple stems and leaves, but get all jacked up over purple buds.

I had purple sugar leaves once. It was ok
