i got just over 1/2 pound for 66 dollars. plus 3 lengths of tubing. i've made 5 pipes (all cracked) and i have only used half of my glass.

you need to cool them gently,if glass goes from hot to suddenly cold it will shatter.

heres a quick simple perspective...have you ever took a hot as incandesent and dipped it in cold water(the bulb is not in the socket when u do this,do it immeadatly after removing from said socket)?it splinters and cracks,i sometimes put a incan in a lamp and wait for it to heat up and give it a heavy mist setting of cold water to watch it crack, the sound is cool when it works.

you could use your oven, set it on broil and put the new pieces in there after creation, with in seconds of life theyll need to go to the oven. the broil is around 500degrees,the glass will set in the right molecular pattern so that way it doesnt crack. u will need to broil for 3hrs,before droppin the oven temps by 50degree intervals to ensure the proper cooling.

if you do have a kiln then use it,just preheat the kiln before putting them in,get tongs for the loading application, set the initial temp to around 500 so that way u only need oven mits to load them in,then crank the temps, then do a slow cooling process.

just a thought for you.

i too want to do glass blowing. imagine tons of bowls that look awesome, there will never be a duplicate, and it was made by you

i think i can use my wood stove. i just need to make a shelf in there for my pieces to sit on. or just put them right on the top. it gets hella hot if i load it up. then let them cool as the fire goes out. i'm looking at kilns and the one i need is 600 dollars. i'm not ready to spend that yet.

gas or electric oven will work as a kiln

although if u use the fire stove, and play around with different woods, the smoke from the wood may give the glass a different hue, some of the smoke may permantly attach to the glass. mmm pine smelling glass,or some hickory pipe with some sour desel:weed:

the wood stove may be a fun little experement. if you want to do the cooling with real ease on money then use your gas/electric oven

very cool. theres a guy in UK who has been doing it for years, he must be into his 80s. i seen him when i was a kid. he makes amazing ornaments with all the colors in all the right places.

i think u should make me a bong and a glass pipe and send to me :D

so i have spoken to a few people. i need a coffee can full of vermiculite on top of my wood stove to keep things warm in. it will act as a mini kiln. i can preheat my tubing in it and put my finished pieces in it. once the fire goes out the vermiculite will slowly cool and the glass will be annealed.

i'm working with the wrong colors. i'm using inside colors that need to be covered with clear or they crack. i need cobalt and ruby. the tubing i'm using is way to small as well.
