most of the expense comes from its illegality i would say from the growers i know because they put their necks on the line taking the risk to grow...but to see it legalized in cali and they still get the same (sometimes more per oz) i think it is ridiculous...id love to move their just to grow my own 6 personal plants w/o risk

my 2 cents

it depends where you live though...if your in a legal state then i agree but when you have to grow stealthily many other accounts come into play

Study: Pot Prices Could Plummet Post-Legalization

A new study says legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in California could sharply drive down prices for the drug and possibly undercut the tax windfall that supporters have touted.

The study published Wednesday by the RAND Drug Policy Research Center says "considerable uncertainty" surrounds the state ballot initiative. It would allow adults, 21 and over, to possess an ounce of marijuana and cities and counties to license and tax commercial pot sales.

The authors predict that retail marijuana prices could drop from $375 an ounce under the state's current medical marijuana law to as low as $38 per ounce.

According to the RAND analysis, consumers would pay more than that — about $91 an ounce — once taxes imposed by local governments are figured in.

That study assumes there will be complete market saturation. I don't think that will be the case. The DEA seems pretty intent on keeping the cultivation model we have in place, not allowing massive scale commercial grows. I do believe more people will grow if prop 19 passes and prices will go down. But it will be way less dramatic than that. I do think prop 19 will mark the end of the $60 eight in California, and probably the end to the $50 eight in northern California. I'd bet on $250 ounces retail with primarily the retailer taking less profit in exchange for selling in a higher volume.

Actually, with Ebay, I copped all the Hydro stuff, made my own bubbler and for about an initial investment of 400.00 or less, grew a white widow that put out 14 OZs. Add in the cost of running to the water store to bring back pure water and you have 150.00 more, a hundred for the extra light bill, that adds up to about 46.50 per OZ. Pretty cheap way to grow, and after your initial investment, all the grow stuff is free. The initial investment included enough nutrients to grow three or four more grows, so all it would cost for the next 14 OZs is 14.85 ea., pretty damn cheap I'd say. Now about seeds, if you want to change your breed every grow, you'd have to purchase different seeds. My advice is to plant a different breed with the first grow, wait for the plants to mature, then snatch the male out by the roots and dust one or two buds with the pollen, then you can start cross breeding to change your taste
Thats how Im looking at it, I am paying a decent light bill and always buying more stuff to grow with. But yea in the long run you get an amazing experience, knowledge and satisfaction of smoking ur own buds. No better feeling than that I suppose, Unless you enjoy paying other ppl for some random trees. Once I get this first grow under my belt, Im pretty sure the only thing I will buy is seeds.
