Imus ...

For the record, I have no idea what nappy hair is....at all.
More importantly, who exactly, is surprised that Imus did exactly what he is paid to do......SHOCK people with his statements.

I think more to the point is do you really think Imus, a great human being, and a well known humanitarian is a bigot?

Okay, your probably shaking your head, getting ready to rip into me for calling Imus, of all people a great humanitarian, but do you know that Imus's passion in life is simply to help sick children....of all colors!

Did the Rev Al Sharpton, simply miss this, or did he not care because this drama would buy him free air time?

Do your homework and learn about the individual before you go off half cocked condemming him. His personality on the radio, is just a job, it is not who he is.

Mr Imus has dedicated a large portion of his life, and his earnings to running the Imus ranch for sick children, he provides this service at NO cost to the kids or there families!!!

"The Imus Ranch is an authentic, working cattle ranch nestled beneath a majestic mesa in the rolling hills near Ribera, New Mexico, 50 miles northeast of Santa Fe. Its sole purpose is to provide the experience of the great American cowboy to children suffering from cancer or serious blood disorders, and children who've lost brothers and sisters to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)."

You can read more about the Imus ranch here

What effect does firing Imus have on this ranch, well it is now in financial trouble, as he paid for it himself, along with contributions....which will now be drying up. You can read more about that here

By the way, over half of the children who go there, are minorities, and when the children do in fact die.....Imus and his wife don't just go to the white kids funerals.
Peace

as a black female was i offended by what imus said? no, not really. if you listen to some of the mainstream radio stations, bet television you can hear statements like that are thrown around with no discretion whatsoever.

i grew up on the comedy of richard pryor, moms mabley, eddie murphy and of course dave chappelle. who have said worse, in a more humorous entertaining way, but worse. so why should we censor imus from making his remark? because he is white? i am way over people jumping up and grabbing a talking head to represent them everytime someone makes an off color comment. i doubt that term is something that imus uses in conversation on a regular basis. he made a badly timed funny. i chuckled when i heard him say it. mainly because it was imus saying it. i had no idea he even knew what the term "nappy headed ho" meant. should he have directed it at these women? probably not, we have no evidence they are either hoes nor were their heads nappy. i'm not an imus fan but i know enough about him to not be surprised by anything he has said.

i commend him on apologizing to the team and kissing all the appropriate black asses that he knew he would have to pony up to. sharpton and jackson do not represent me as a person of color. i see them as opportunists. anyone recall jackson's remark about "himey town" not so many moons ago?

*some white guy took the last of the wasabi peas at whole foods the other day. i asked the stocker if he could hook me up with some more from the back. he took his sweet time. i'm pretty sure it was a conspiracy against me as a black woman, denying me my wasabi peas. now that i think about it, i should call sharpton asap.

I was really wondering if Imus and all this hoopla, is really that important that we need to be wasting our time on it. I for one have lived in the deep south and also in Northern Ny where black/African American folks are few and far between, and I can say I have been called a "nappyheaded ho" once or twice in my life and I am NOT even BLACK, I have on the other hand been the one doing the name calling. I have done it in the south and in the north and like any other person when I called a girl a "cracked out Ho we went at it... most folks would assume I was talking or arguing with a black chick.....wrong she was chinese....so HA......I mean we have more important things to worry about than if we hurt someones feelings by saying something that might be politically incorrect......shit....I have had my feelings hurt and been pissed when I was called stupid names....and that is all any of this is ...it is simply.....STICKS AND FUCKING STONES ......STICKS AND STONES MAY BREAK MY BONES BUT WORDS CAN AND WILL NEVER HURT ME........I mean come on... No one is right for name calling names period!!! It is not mature, nor is it very attractive.....SO I say FUCK them all If Imus thinks the Rugs...are nappy headed ho's he doesn't have to watch them play, nor do you or anyone else that IMUS OFFENDS HAS to listen to him,....you are a big girl/boy now that you are all grown up CHANGE THE FUCKING CHANNEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! END of THREAD.....WEED does not care what color, race,or religion you are, it will always be there to get you high, no mater what or who you are so if it does not discriminate why should we.....

And furthermore shouldn't we all be teaching our children that everyone deserves to be loved and not called names and ridiculed.....it can only start with us to change the future for the better, we all have to get along in order to do that.....or atleast keep petty shit for coffee table talk....

The answer is to ban all Hip-Hop and Rap from the face of the earth, to be replaced by Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta Jones, Nat Cole, Kevin Mahogany, Joe Williams, Lou Rauls ... and on and on and on ...

what? you want to replace noise and repetitive cursing about fictional accounts of glorified violence with carefully crafted MUSIC?

Vi, that's completely unacceptable...next thing you know there will be an attitude shift, self-respect, accountability, maybe even success and happiness! we can't have that Vi, God forbid al sharpton should be out of a job with no one to listen to his blabbering rants...

Ban it why??? NO.....don't let your/our children listen to it....but adults are capable of listening to it & not act out the lyrics, you have to be smart enough to know it is just entertainment just like Imus is.....just entertainment if you don't like it turn it off, but ban it....what a simple minded thing to say,... do you believe women should be barefoot and pregnant?.... I am 31 years old and I like Snoop-Dogg, & Ludacris....I sir also like Nat K. Cole, and some others I also like Mozart, I like a very wide range of music.... I however hate country music......absolutly hate it I think it is trashy,.....but ban it...no I will just CHOOSE not to listen to it.....I guess you Vi are into book burning too if the book doesn't suit your taste.....???????????????????

Yeah? Well I was working out at the gym one morning and the punk at the front desk had the sound system cranked up full blast playing Eminim (sp). The majority of the people there were in their mid-50s, about half were women. I approached the numb nutz at the front desk and asked him if he thought lyrics that said: "Pussy residue on my dick" was appropriate for the gym. I've never heard Sarah Vaughn or any of the others I've mentioned use lyrics like that. So where's the redeeming value in lyrics that talk about pussy residue, hoes, crack and abusing women in general? Where's the art in that? Please ... someone step up with the answer. Noe Wa Im Sayn'?

Ummmmm.... maybe there are no redeeming qualities in that music.. .maybe there are only motivational qualities...

Plus, remember we live in a society that likes to bomb boys and girls from 30,000 feet... think of EMinem as a self lubricant that society needs before it embarks on its daily murdeing quests.. Eminem is nothing.. have you seen what is going on in Iraq? and they play that shit on the TV non stop in my gym... :) And nobody seems to give a shit... wow

I think its kind of a cop out to blame media for the deeper issues and problems this culture has. Back in the day, ella fitzgerald was probably as loathed by parents as eminem is loathed by you.

The issue is that basic ethics and principles has eroded with each generation, and now we're at a point where our fundamental morals and principles are non existent, and that vacancy is filled by commercialized "lifestyles". Not just rap. I listen to alot of punk, and the trend, for awhile, has been to sell an entire outlook: morals, styles, attitudes.

I don't want to say its the parents fault, cus its not really. This is like a societal evolution, and our progression to this point has been a shift from traditional child rearing and personality formation to a commercially dictated method of child rearing and subsequent personality formation.

Just my opinion.

Also, I don't think that is really an turning back from the path that we're on. Materialism is like an inborn drive now.

Okay lets talk about the Beetles.....the lyrics are not harsh or abrasive, but yet I can remember parents being like oh no don't follow the hippies with the Grateful Dead, Beetles, Elvis, I think you had the right to ask him to change the music, but don't ask him if he thinks it is appropriate, he was playing it in the first place, he works there you and those ladies pay for a service and if the enviroment is not comfortable to you then yes ask to change the music ........but ban it.....FUCK THAT, ....... I like it all...and ya know most of the time it ....is the beat.... that gets me...I don't worry about the lyrics unless it means something to me.......Like Run a Way love by Ludacris....maybe you should listen to this one VI.....and understand that this world is shitty and kids have to deal with bigger shit that we use to have to ........so they use music to look for inspirational thoughts....It just may not be what you think is ISPIRATIONAL,.....My 9 year old loves Fleetwood Mac.......but she loves Fergie...and Eminem.....I don't see her turing out so bad listening to the same selection I do.....she knows right from wrong she knows she can't say the bad words....most of the time she makes up happy words to replace those bad ones,...... it is all in how you raise them.... now if I told her NO NO NO NO NO NO, this is trash she will listen to it whenever she is away......I think country music ranks right up there with Rap when it comes to Love, hate, and adultery......so why don't you bang country music also........Oh because it is okay to cheat on your man, take his dog, and beat up his nice 4 wheel drive......truck then she goes back to her trailer.!!!!!! Hells lets ban it all cause all of it offends someone or another.....FUck it ban all music and ban all books.....that is what this world is coming to soon there will be no FREE SPEECH and we will NEVER get cannabis legalized......Is that what you are shooting for Vi?????? So I stepped up to give you my answer.....to your question..... Is it the right answer.....of course cause I am female that makes me right all the time....100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a professor for African American literature, and his view was that Rap is not a form of poetry or art because it does not express anything beyond violence, sex, and humor...

Thats his opinion, but personally I have to disagree... rap isn't just about the lyrics, its about the production, the beats... the way most rap works, lyrics are banged out en masse by a ghostwriter... they are lyrics for money... what you have to focus on is the good stuff, KRS-ONE for example, Jurrasic 5, TCQ, these are rappers that most definately producing ART.

Eminem may have extremely violent and angry lyrics, and in recent albums he is playing up the shock value... but eminem in his prime was writing some good stuff... maybe not to you, but to alot of other people, it is VERY good. it should also be pointed out that much of it is VALID social commentary and tongue in cheek...

Dead Kennedys, for instance, wrote some arguably offensive lyrics, but that doesn't change the fact that Jello Biafra's lyrics are all relevant, then and now, and i for one consider DK to be art.

To use another example: Some people thought that Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting was total crap... but the guy wrote one of the best, most balanced novels on drug use... he worked an entire spoken dialect into words for Gods sake!

But what I call art, others call crap. You shouldn't rail against the music, even if some of it is crap (there is commercial crap in every genre, not just rap.) You should be more disturbed by the fact that these are the lyrics that record companies want put out, because as i stated above, they are selling a package, not just music. They are selling a lifestyle, and your kids and my peers are all buying into it.
