Man there's a huge difference in price from Canada to US.
I'm in Canada , looking at Citizen CLU048-1212C4-353M2K1 and it's $40 for one.

looking at some chart(do not remember if in this thread or another) I have seen 1212 efficency(real world tested, not manifacturer data):
60% @700 mah,25 watt
56% @1000 mah, 35 watt
52% @1400, 50 watt

Is there something similar for 1818?
Looking for 1818@ 75W , @ 55W , @ 43.4W , @ 35W
I am about to build my first fixture and need to choose best option between 1212 and 1818(including wise driver matching and holder, already have heathsink bar)
Since I am in europe, I need to buy all from you to save on shipping
I am not interested in citizen data since they are underrated and very different from real world
(sorry for bad english)

1050 mAmp driver, hlg240 will take 6 and hlg320 will take 8, i think. Better checking this stuff with cobby. And please note the stickied thread on the led forum diy leds and how to power them. Read up to make sure all i told you isnt bullshit. What i give are opinions but its a good idea how to makebur own
ill make a supra-style chart for all the drivers when i get a chance

I am doing some math, and even if I have heathsink bar, the cost of 1212 is more than 1818 ,since you do not have some driver that match best with 1212(for series or parallel)
Here is my (supposed)number:


1212 configuration
Ideal holder for Citizen CLU048 series X18
Citizen CLU048-1212 80CRI X18
MeanWell HLG-240H-C Driver 1050mah (6 cob per driver at 35w ea) X3

Total $522 for 630W of light at 56% eff


1818 configuration

Ideal holder for Citizen CLU048 series X12
Citizen CLU048-1818 80CRI X12
MeanWell HLG-185H-48A Driver (4 cob per driver at 55w ea,Base3d on your indication) X3

Total $492 for 660W of light at 56%


So 1212 is not the most convenient option.Am I wrong?any suggestion?

1212 configuration:
238V on the driver
at 1050 mA the cobs are 36.2V, 38W ea = 684W

1818 configuration:
4.25A/4= 1062 mA = 55.7W x 12 = 668.4W

the 3W per cob difference on the 1212 makes a difference

citi tool rates these both at 164 lm/W so yes seem like a match

and yes the 185-48A drivers will always be cheaper per watt as i have a bunch and they are on sale...

remember you will need more holders for the 1212s and more time to mount

ouch- playing around with the active light engines, those fans are no joke i got my finger in there and it bit me good

never had a plastic case fan cut me before

Be careful with case fan....I had bad experience with servo-nidec high rpm fan :(
So, since I do not need really more than 550W of light(to be honest,500W would be more than enough for a 4x4)what do you think is best?
I would go for 12x1818.
I do not know how dimming works on hlg-185h-48a....Can I dimm every cob down to 1000 mah or lower(and get every cob to 50Watt or lower)?
Since I am more used to constant current driver,the hlg-240-c 1050 would be much easier to work with,but also way more expensive,plus I do not like to work with high voltage for safety reason(238v at 1.05A dc could kill ,36v at 4A dc I think do not pass skin resistance,but maybe I am wrong)

Well im assuming you want 3500k - if not, check stock to make sure i have what you want

but all things being equal id got 1818 you'll save on holders and less to drill and mount

12 cobs vs 18 shouldnt have that much difference in coverage really

already have 2 different chart,all stock available.
I will go with 1818 but I have not decided wich driver,since i do not know how dimming works on hlg-185h-48a.
Can I dim every cob to 1000 mah or less?I want 500/550 watt of light

-1919 -$5 including solderless holder

-2828 (37.5W) -$7 including holder (the no-name holders they sent me looks like they could take reflectors but i dont have any. the ideal and bjbs for -048s on my site fit these as well and accommodate reflectors, but youd have to buy seprately)

-2828 (56.3W)-$11 including holder (same dealio as above)

-2828 (84.5W)-$15 including holder (same dealio as above)

-3838 (117.4W)-$23 including the weirdest ceramic holder youve ever seen- the -058 bjbs on my site also fit these

-3838 (169W)-$32 -$23 including the weirdest ceramic holder youve ever seen- the -058 bjbs on my site also fit these

i really bought the smaller cheaper ones of different color temp to run on the spectrometer (as they had sm.qty samples available) but may not get around to that. may or may not elect to keep them.

could mount any of the 2828s or 3838s on an active light engine if you wanted. if youre into that we would just discount the price from the citi chips (use say $24.50 for 1818 and $40 for 1825 - mounting would be the same - bjbs for 2828 and i would solder and mod reflector for 3838 )
This ppfd chart is only really missing one thing, a comparison with a cxb3590 72volts. Cree says the same preformance as 36 v but most of the winners are high voltage chips.
