LED light output

I was looking at the Platinum LED 150w. They say it replaces a 250w HPS and the average power draw is 50w for veg and 87w for bloom. I thought this was a good thing at first because it's putting out 150w of usable light and using less than 100w of power. My main reason for buying an LED is to save on electricity costs as it is very high in my area. Is my understanding of how it works correct, or is it only putting out 100w of light when drawing 100w of electricity? I'd also like to look at other brands to possibly find a cheaper light, but I want to make sure I'm not sacrificing quality if the average draw is less than the output stated.

You have to think in terms of plant usable light, those Chinese diodes are probably 30% efficient, so for your 150watt light that equates to about 45watts of PPF.

Are you talking about Platinum LED specifically? They show a par test and it looks pretty impressive

I can understand the replacing a 250w HPS part not being true, but a lot of the reviews
say the same thing about the power consumption. In their video it's hooked up to a watt reader, and I can also use a watt reader and return it if it's not true. That's not the part I have issue with, it's whether or not that means only 87w of light is being used at that time or if it puts out 150w of light

Let me ask you a question. What kind of diodes and drivers are platinum using? If you can't answer that because they don't give you that information, then you have to ask yourself.. Why aren't they?

If platinum is still using crappy Chinese diodes and drivers, then ya i stand behind my original post.

In nearly all cases if manufacturers are using quality components, it won't be hard to find the answer to those simple questions.

Yes if it's drawing 150watts most of that is being converted to light a small percentage is in use for cooling fans,driver loss etc. However not all light is photosensitivley reactive.%30 for those lights is probably fair, 45watts of total PPF is probably being overly generous considering the losses in driver efficiency and what the cooling fans are using.

doubtful....it doesnt matter the draw , the output matters and these lights are just big heaters with some pretty colors, in reality....Pure Hype!

So what's a good LED to buy? And are you guys saying actual power draw has nothing to do with output of light?

Actual power draw does have everything to do with the output of the light.

When you run low efficiency diodes and drivers a smaller percentage of that total draw is usable light.

When you are talking diode efficiency an extra %20 for the diodes and another 10% for a good driver like a meanwhile, can mean a Good light will produce %30 more light for the same power draw..

Using 87w to produce 150w seems pretty efficient. What's a good LED I can get

It's not using 87watts to produce 150...its producing 45watts of PPF for 150watts of draw... Under no circumstances are you ever going to produce more watts of light then the unit pulls from the wall.

The difference is how much of that light produced is photosensitive active radiation . the question is do you want to be able to use 30% of those 150watts or 50%, in some cases more.

There's tons of references to good LED fixtures on this forum, I'm not recommending any fixtures anymore. Do some poking around the led forum here.
