My wife needs some glass advice from the experts ...

My wife has just started smoking 5 months ago, due to extreme pain. Her throat is really sensitive, and the smoke bothers her. I want her to change to a vape, but she actually enjoys the burning of the flower. So she has enlisted me in finding her the best bong that we can afford, with the sole purpose of that bong being the smoothest hit possible on her throat.

I almost bought a $200 Hurricane bong .... but I personally know two people who have owned them and said they were no smoother than a regular bong. So now I am looking at Percolator bongs. I see bongs that have a 12 tree percolator inside of them with a splash guard and ice dents .... As low as $100 for claimed 5mm Borsolite glass ....

But hey ... I am lost now. I need good advice from professionals and experienced smokers .... Thanks for any help you can offer.

It's really hard to say how a bong will hit without smoking from it first. I smoked from a 4 ft bong with 6 (yes 6..) percs and it was incredibly harsh. I've also smoked out of a small straight shooter Roor with a precooler and it was as smooth as can be. My advice for you is to go on Grasscity or something and read reviews... without smoking from the exact bong, no one will know how it hits.

Because "you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig"

You are asking the impossible. The pig, is the bong, right? The lipstick, is the marketing and advertising that tells you a bong is worth 200 bucks etc + any little details they might legitimately add to it... but it's still a pig (bong) lol

Ok to put it another way, anything that is burnt and turns into a carbon rich smog is going to be bad for your throat/lungs- because your body isn't designed to breath in smoke. It's full of tar and tiny particles and nasty things like CO. If your 'bong' didn't produce this smoke... well it wouldn't be a bong would it? It would be a vaporizer or something else. You can have 20 chambers and 50 twists and 600 gallons of water... but are you breathing in smoke or not? You can't pretty up smoke- you are either breathing it in or you aren't.

As it is bongs are a bit silly really (not to say someone shouldn't like using them). They have atleast 1 chamber of water which the smoke passes through to 'filter' it- but it doesn't make it any less a tar filled experience for your lungs. Scientists have proven that the water reduces the active compounds that reach you in the smoke, so any tar captured by the water doesn't benefit you since you have to smoke more material to make up for the lost active compounds. Add to that the fact you are breathing in water vapor and the end result is that bongs are more unhealthy than pipes and joints (says NORML and scientists, not just my opinion).

So to end this ramble I'll just start the explanation again but keep it simple: you can't make a bong that isn't harsh (especially when you are comparing harsh to just breathing in the air of your living room).

Your wife (and anyone who cares about their body's peak health) needs to use a vaporizer or edibles.

Marketing only does so much. Brand image does a lot for ignorant people. But I have to ask... how many bongs have you smoked from? Each one hits and feels ENTIRELY different... I don't think anyone here is arguing that filters make the smoke "healthier". The angle of the downstem, the size of the joint, the length/type of the downstem, the shape of the bong, the height of the bong, the thickness of the glass, etc. etc. WILL make a difference in the way a glass piece smokes, plain and simple.

Filters are NOT intended to make smoke less "unhealthy"... or whatever you want to call it. They are intended to make a hit SMOOTHER to enable the person smoking to more comfortably hold more smoke in their lungs. So sure, I agree that it's probably worse than smoking from pipes and joints. I don't smoke cigarettes and my lungs seem to be more sensitive to the smoke, but I can take a massive hit from a smooth hitting bong.

But then again, if healthiness is a concern, yeah.. go for edibles or a vape.

Smoke can be smoother of course, but its still going to be smoke. I just assumed that when you said your wife's throat was extremely sensitive that even the smoothest of smoke will still be hard on it.
Even a thick vape could hurt a sensitive throat (you'd be better sticking to lower temperatures).

So anyway hopefully maybe you can find a bong that is smooth enough?
If only you could try em out in the store before you buy them aye? :bigjoint:

yeah man it really is hard for us to say "yo, your wife is going to love this bong. It hits perfect FOR HER." ...see where we're getting at?

The best bet would be to try some out. Check out AquaLabTech and DabLab to see different brands and styles.

Of course more percs/ precoolers/ coils you have the smoother your hit will be, but at what cost? You're guaranteed more drag which makes it harder to pull, I doubt your wife will like that. Get something smaller/ skinnier to help with this issue (stay away from the giant Zong brand bongs, they're HUGE!).

Price is of course another issue. A regular 3/5 arm perc tree isn't going to stack bubbles (diffusion/ filtration) the same as say a Kush Puckline or a Mobius Matrix (both of those are awesome bongs though, I'd look into shucking out an extra 150 for the Kush Sci Puckline). I'd say you're looking at a nice Helix, Zob, Syn, HVY, or like a Grav Lab. Those are all "Production Glass Lines," but the higher tier.

**Edit- Also, the HempWick is a good product for lowering the harshness of a bowl pack. It's an all natural hemp string that is coated in all natural honey bee wax. Another item that may help would be a hot-wand or one of the ceramic soldering irons

yeah if she's serious about it go with edibles or just hash oil. Seriously, I take one dab in the morning and it's all I need until the afternoon.

pretty uptight for a stoner aren't ya? perc downstem + precooler/ashcatcher and ice notch bong like an Ehle is about $60-80. i have one it hits lovely without drag. as others have said though vape is much healthier or edibles/tinc.

That was just one or two studies that say that. This is the more common and popular study: http://www.neurophys.wisc.edu/~cozzi/maps4-4-93.html

Also that study that NORML did makes no sense, at all. I used to come home and pack a bowl to three bowls in my pipe. Decided to get a bubbler, now I still just smoke one to three bubbler packs and get just as high. Also, breathing in water vapor isn't going to damage your lungs. What about showers, fog, humidity, accidentally inhaling water, etc? They don't damage your lungs? Besides, would you rather your smoke just go through a tube into your lungs or through water first? It makes more sense that atleast having water will stop SOME tar and residue from making it to your lungs.

The more percs, chambers, and diffusions you have, the better and smoother it will be on the throat/lungs.

So go for double, triple, even quadruple chambered/percolated bongs/bubblers with ice catches. Get a carbon filter/ash catcher/precooler attachment to go with the bong. The more, the smoother.

Ice is good but it can dry your throat if you smoke too much. I think the ice removes a lot of the moisture from the hit. Hit up a local headshop and ask if she can try a few pieces with ice pinches and an ashcatcher. I vary my methods depending on my mood. I like Js an blunts for chilling but too many and Im coughing up crap. The upside is I get everything the bud has to offer. I have a nice glass collection (Salt mini beaker and slides, Toro straights, micro and macro, Sheldon Black). Too many bong hits sometimes affects my ears and throat, resulting in sinus infections sometimes. The upside with bongs is I can take 1 huge hit or a snap and Im good for 30-45 minutes. I know the high is different. Vapes for me are the least pleasurable and the high builds up over time. Its definitely smoother but the high profile is way different. I dont feel like I get as baked as with the previous 2 methods because I think there are cannabinoids that get activated with the burning of the plant material.

ive never heard of anyone getting sinus infections from bong hits. that sucks.
you sure you didnt just happen to get sinus infections around the time you were ripping a bong, and your inner stoner convinced you the bong hits got you sick?
