Listen to kindprincess, and use rockwool and hydrton rocks. You have to take a razor and make a slice int eh rockwool cubes and DO NOT soak them, jsut wet them!

I am listening to her i just dont have any rockwool left im using hydroton i was using perlite for starting my seedling out in a rapid rooter with perlite around it so it can develop some roots while i get my waterfarm tuned in and i think rapid rooters work just as good maybe there not as stable but if you position them the right way they shouldnt have too much of a problem.... damn thats probably why my roots never came through i never sliced the damn rockwool cube:twisted:

The rockwool cubes I buy have pre-drilled holes and are already sliced in half.
on my only three grows, i started with seed in the wet but not soaking wet cubes. Overwatering a cube makes it just quit being a cube, it turns into a mushy lump of water. After I saw a root hanging out the bottom, and two little baby dark green leaves at the top, i introduced half recomended amount of nutes. Works great for me.

i don't slice my rw; it has a hole for slips or beans. i do soak my cubes (to get a good and solid ph) but before i put anything in them, i shake the cube util it's not heavy with water. i dip the cubes in ph'd water once or twice a week until i have roots showing, but once again, with dipping, you should be quick; the bottom will hold the water, and it will wick throughout the cube.

i prefer to start directly in the medium i'll be using though; ie, dirt, gravel or hydroton for aero or dwc.... i hate transplanting when growing in a hydro system, i like it better if they start out where they are going to finish, if that makes sense...
