You'd be better vegging with the 315 cmh. One of my veg tents is a 4x4 and has one in and they veg great, even the lower kelvin bulbs.

When it comes to flower, if you plan on filling that tent, you'd want 4 LED bars around 60-75w each around it..

Though you can always do a run with what you have for now..

But 3x3 is 9square feet.
4x4 is 16.. it's nearly double the footprint
It's more for efficiency than anything. I think a 100w quantum board is enough for a single plant. Lol. I they'll be OK.

Imo growing weed with less than ideal lighting is just not worth it. You'll get SOME good bud under the light and lots of larf and crap around the edges. Keeping plants smaller and not having 100 shoots off each plant will help. Try not to have the tent filled to the outer most edges. Once the plants get bigger through flower is when you'll start to see shaded spots which can also cause other issues as well. Keep your shoots centralized under the main footprint and you should be ok. Yield will suffer but if you just want some weed to smoke and aren't worried about producing quad quality then you'll be just fine.
Even in a 3x3 the outer edges drop in par value significantly with a CMH. Light height can be tricky because you want to spread the light but the further away the less intense it is (obv) but gives better overall par readings vs having it close with optimal readings directly underneath and tapering out as it gets further away. Things like adjustable reflector hoods help

I've grown some of the best weed I've ever had in a 2x4 tent with two 70w MH/HPS. Granted it was only ever 2-4 plants, but nonetheless. This 400w of LED lighting is much stronger and much better spectrum. Not to mention the 315w CMH that will be added to it during flower. I think nearly 800w of 3k 4k, red diodes, IR diodes, etc, will produce plenty of A+ bud

One of my LEDS has Sanan Diodes, the other is a full Phillips QB, with a Meanwell Driver.

Are you recommending more than 700w for the 4x4?

Edit - honestly, by the time flower rolls around, I might even have the other 315w socket/ballast hooked up in the big light fixture!

Ya for sure man. It's all about what you personally are happy with. For me, it's diff. I'm looking for every nug to be the best it can be. I cut away any small branches and do lots of work to ensure each bud is the best I can make it. I'll generally toss anything less than ideal into the hash pile, and only smoke top quality. Anything else is ... Yuck.
I won't even smoke outdoor anymore. Lol. I'm a picky bitch but hey that's what makes me happy so w/e

Yea no doubt. I don't expect this to be anything but top shelf. This is a well known breeder around my area and the genetics are clearly shining through. I spend a lot of time with these girls. I do a ton of LST'n, supercropping, topping and lollipopping on EVERY plant - I just screwed myself germinating em like I did, so they're all kinda off on age lol. It's all good though. I plan to let em run until I see preflowering, I need a good chunk on this first run!

I think i may let one of them grow how she grows, just to do a side by side comparison. But, I still haven't made my mind on that! Lol

Happy growing

Went a took a few photos. As you can see, I really tie these things down and trim them up, to really penetrate the middle of that flat canopy! The fan leaves are MASSIVE - the picture is of its first 5 finger set and they're already huge, so I have to knock em back, otherwise nothing else will ever see light. I've topped and supercropped the biggest one A LOT, trying to hold it back, so the rest of the crop could catch up. Now that everything is good and rooted and obviously growing well, I'll chill out for a while. Lol.

I also have 2 more clones of the same Vaghan Marmalade strain. I think one of them has taken root, but still a waiting game, to see roots in the Root Riot cubes. I've started hardening them off by giving them a cpl hours of shaded light every day...

So I ordered another complete 315w CMH Fixture, only because it was on sale for like $40, shipped to my door, after taxes! It doesn't come with a bulb, but it comes with a ballast connected to the fixture AND the socket that I need...

I also ordered two 3k Phillips Bulbs!

I'm just going to seperate the ballast and mount it on a control board, next to my other 315w ballast (outside of the tent). Then, I'm running the socket via the plug and wire that came with my Phantom CMH. The socket will be mounted to the other side of the giant cool tube reflector/hood. So.... that will give me 630w of CMH during flower!

I also ordered 3 more Growstar HLZB-2 LED quantum boards, to match the one I have now. That will be 800w of dimmable, full spectrum Samsung LEDs for veg - with a 630w of CMH in the air cooled reflector!

Now all I gotta do is see if Growstar will sell me the brackets they use, when connecting two of these boards together, the same way I am!

I've changed my mind and decided to do this right the first time. I caught a good deal and I've decided to go with the

Fluence Spydr 2i 631w
Should update the thread name. Only reason I clicked was for the cmh in the title. Good luck with the grow either way.

So, I had a friend graciously gift me this here setup. I plan to set it up during the coming days. It's a 5x5x7ft Vivosun tent, with a Hydrofarm Phantom 315w CMH to go with. It also has all the Inkbird controls, with an AC Infinity inline duct fan, paired with the biggest damn charcoal filter ive ever seen! Lol. He also gifted me a 150w Blurple COB LED and a bunch of other timers, thermometers/hydometers, extra industrial duct fan, surge protectors, etc. What a f*ckin guy!!!!

Now I have about 500w of LEDS lying around that I can use already for this setup, but its 3 entire different lights, that don't match. 300w are in my 2x4 now. But, I think the CMH will be a cleaner setup and look. Hell, it will probably grow better as well! I also have heard really good things about CMH's, so I'm excited to try it out. Efficiency isn't a huge deal here and it's obvious my friend didn't cut corners with his hobby....

Now. I've had a lot of other HID setups, but never a CMH. Only a few smaller ones that I've made out of house fixtures/ballast and my bought MH/HPS 600w cooltube grow light, that i still have. This is by far the nicest stuff I've ever owned haha... It's my understanding that these don't get as hot, or use as many watts, but still put out the same amount of light as an equivalent HID or LED. Is this correct? I'm just wondering if this light is big enough for this setup and will grow like i need it to? He swears it is and claims massive yields from one Gorilla Glue Auto run, using this setup and I'm not doubting his ability or anything of that nature, he's a good friend... I'm just wanting some other opinions. Maybe of some other ppl that have a similar setup? This thing only has ONE GROW under its belt.....

He also swears it doesn't get very hot. That he just had it in his garage, with the negative pressure of the inline duct pulling outside for air. He claims he even had to use a heater during lights out. All of which I believe, as it was in his garage. This is going in my house though, so I plan to have an inline duct, hooked to the Rainbird (so it cuts on and off at free will to keep in my set parameters), coming directly from outside and the cold winter air that it holds via a window. As well as the AC Infinity doing its think 24/7, which is sucking air out of that same window, via the charcoal filter. If it does indeed get too hot still, with that going on. I have the ducts to attach onto the sides of the light fixture, to make it a cool tube type setup. So I think I have the temp under control, I definitely have lots to work with and could easily have winter air pulling over that light in an instant.

*Update - I'm actually thinking of swapping the light fixtures and using my MH fixture, as it is vertical and already has the ducts on it. Would I need to swap the entire socket and cord over to that hood? I don't believe they have the same connections, so I'm sure I would. But it's easy enough. I'm planning a setup, like I have pictured...

That said, does anyone have any opinions on this sucker? I have 6 Vaghan Marmalade's from a breeder by the name of Jolly Pond Farm's out of my local Virginia. 2 of which are clones and still in the humidity dome right now - they're from the biggest plant. All of this is in my 2x4 tent right now and as u can expect, it's already crowded. Im really excited about these plants, as theyre already SUPER bushy and bulking up nicely. Its a cross of VA Beach Ghani and Limetta Maramalade. Everyone is always raving about the Virginia Ghani, so im very excited to see it bred with a lemon strain! I plan to throw them into the tent, along with a Critical XXL Auto (that is in germ now) during their veg stage. When the auto finishes and i harvest some smoke..... thats when ill flip the phenos.

Thoughts, opinions, anything? Lol!
- Peace!
I need friends like yours damn! I would personnally switch over to LED as fast as you can, due to nothing more than the cost of running those lights, LED are much cheaper to run.

Thats what I'm running also. I can afford it.
Yea it's not too bad, especially only using that during flower. That said, I'm pulling the trigger on this Fluence Spydr 2i 631w bar led and I'm pretty excited to see what it does. It's dimmable, so I may use my vented CMH hood over top of it during flower. I Def have a bunch of options now!

Whelp, everything is going good in the tent, it's a done deal and BIG THINGS ARE HAPPENING!

My second 315w CMH will be here Friday and I'll wire it into the other side of the hood, making it a 630w CMH duct cooled fixture to use during flower.

But I also just ordered a permanent light source for my 4x4 tent! I got (on an absolute steal i might add), a Fluence Spydr 2i 631w Bar LED for veg and possibly even to pair with the CMH during full flower! The only thing about this light is their is no IR or UV supplementation, so I will be purchasing MarsHydro's UV/IR strips to add onto the 2i.

I'm expecting great things with this grow, so keep your eyes peeled. Even my clones are looking decent!
