No Olympics for Chicago

Oh well, I'm sure Glen Beck is happy. Sad that an entire network spent much of the last week putting their bullshit political agenda in front of national and civic pride.

That's just their way. Priority one: $. Priority 2: political agenda... somewhere down the list of priorities are getting the news out there in a fair way, and concern over how they affect the country.
And, before you fox fans get your panties in a bunch: I think the other networks are the same. About the only news that seems to put getting fairly unbiased news out there as a high priority is BBC.

I couldn't agree more. As far as I'm concerned MSNBC is just as bad as Fox, CNN isn't perfect either. I do like BBC. I used to work a third shift job and would listen to the BBC World Service radio programs during the wee hours of the night. I think they have their biases as well (Specifically during the Israeli Lebanon war a few years back) but I can tell you one thing for sure. I was never more informed about international news and events than I was during those 3 years.

Yes, it is a tragic day for us all. Taking it all into account, millions of dollars for Obamas to travel to Copenhagen (doubled of course because Michelle needed to go a day early), the sacrifice, oh my god, the sacrifice of having to take a trip to lunch with the queen... <sniffle> <sniffle> ... Excuse me, I need a moment to compose myself. We are so fortunate to have leaders like this who will go so far to pay off their campaign supporters and make sure their faces are on tv just about every day. Of course the colossal failure and embarrassment in this endeavor, which in truth is tiny compared to all the failures in foreign policy attempts thus far, may actually bring some humility to this douchebag. Ah yes, the glory that is the "It's all about Obama" administration.

Precisely what I was talking about. People putting their all-consuming hatred of Obama ahead of something that could have been a source of national pride.

Oh, and they took separate flights because Michelle was going with the Chicago delegation, whereas Barack was only making a 1 day trip. Seems a bit petty to bitch about the costs incurred, but it doesn't surprise me either.

Obama was smacked down by his own elitism. Don't blame the Beck for doing his job. If you actually read up on the Chicago story, you will find Obama, cronies, and friends all lined up to make millions while the city of Chicago (who didn't want the games), footing the bill.

The fact that Obama went over there personally is a sign that
A.) He's completely enamored with himself
B.) He thought it was a slam dunk
c.) He is naive and a sloppy politician
D.) He's worn out his welcome in Europe, and elsewhere.

Epic fail
Using the term "Epic fail" is an epic failure in and of itself... if you're going to use imbecilic terms...why not go with "pwned" or better yet order and wear a "zoot suit" from the Sears & Roebucks catalog. I'll bet your viewing this site on a commodore 64 while sewing sequins on the pockets of your Jordache jeans.

So wrong.

2008 was one of the worst years for murder in Chicago in decades...slightly over 500 were killed.

Rio? 5,700 were murdered in 2008.

10 times as many as Chicago.

So what. If we went by crime rates nationally, the USA would NEVER get the Olympics.

In the end, it saved Obama a scandal later. He can limp back home, perhaps a bit wiser, but I doubt it. He still thinks the world leaders respect him.... they don't. Not anymore.

But it was all just an excuse to grease the wheels of the shady politicians and bosses of Chicago.

It cost Chicago 100 million dollars just to bid on the Olympics? 3.8 billion if Chicago "won"?

All of Obama's friends were lined up to take advantage. Millions for them through development deals, and Billions in bills for Chicago.

Business as usual for team Obama.

I would guess that he made a calculated political choice that it would look worse to not go and lose the games than it would to go over there and lose them. Who knows what the right choice was as far as that goes.

There was some interesting perspective from the former COO of the U.S.O.C. as far as what might have happened. His opinion is that there is a possibility that many who would have voted for Chicago (or Rio) voted for Madrid or Tokyo instead, assuming Chicago and Rio would make it to the final two regardless, and that's why Chicago was actually eliminated first. Interesting hypothesis from someone who knows how the game works.

I do think it's cool that Rio got the games. South America was due, and I can't think of many better cities to host.

My point was that it was annoying to see so many people oppose something typically non-partisan and non-political just because Obama happened to support it. The majority of the replies to this thread have proven just how petty the fringe of the right has become. I was no fan of Bush, but would have supported him 100% if he was making a push for the Olympics in say, Houston or Dallas. Pretty sad stuff fellas...

So maybe my choice of words was incorrect, you have me there. My point still stands. Someone made an incorrect assertion with no facts to back it up. The facts speak for themselves and I probably should have just ended it there and not added my own commentary.

As for the rest of your post, ad hominem attacks are pretty much the most intellectually dishonest and ignorant forms of debate...
