North Carolina outdoor 2009

did a good bit of digging today loosening up that soil, gonna throw some more seedlings out. the 17" shovel from walmart kicks ass.

I checked the runt of the group's roots when I was transplanting it into another hole, and I noticed there was very little root growth. I'm curious if it's from all that rain we had, or if that clay in the soil is compacting around it... there's plenty of other small roots in the same soil, i had to chop plenty digging the hole... so i wouldnt think they were struggling to expand...

I'm considering putting clones out in mid-late, but im not sure if in the ground or containers. they won't be tended to too often due to being in a dense thicket, so I need to research...

do you guys think this is overkill for a 1ft tall plant put out in mid -late June? I'm wondering if it'll have enough time to utilize the space, or if i'm just wasting dirt. i've seen impressive grows in 5 gallon buckets... but this thing is huge, its a small tree container from a nursery. found it out behind my g/f's house.

I'm starting to do a good bit of topping and training now. Using broke-off sticks as stakes, just trying to expose the 'secondary' growth to sunlight.

I don't know if there is such a thing as overkill when it comes to container gardening. Worst case scenario your plant doesn't use the whole available root space, in which case it still got to it's full potential.

yea that shit is acidic as hell too, the pH was like 4. I limed the shit out of it, seems to be helping some. like you said, roots and bark aren't soil. shit holds water like a sponge too, and takes 8+ days to dry out. Should have stuck to FFOF. Any experience with ProMix?

it got cold here, but damn! I have a friend who lives by the Yadkin near Boone's Cave. I was going to grow a few out there but he leases the land to hunters...

were they clones or seedlings? time to start over!

I'd like to fill it with something worthwhile, and pretty much free-ish. if i can help it... something other than red clay, haha. can't afford to fill that bitch with fox farm, and i'd be damned if i go super cheap and get that bullshit hyponex.

Try going to lowes. Get a brick of peat moss, a bag of cow manure, and a bag of top soil. Add perlite and you should be good. This will give you a great soil mix and it'll be under $20.

i was thinking about native soil + compost + perlite + sand. even cheaper.

Sounds like a plan. I'm always afraid my compost has mold in it and will kill my plants.

My veggie garden is an 8 x 8 raised bed with peat moss, cow manure, top soil, perlite, and two bags of FFOF. Beats the hell out of fertilizing all the time.

I use a mixture of my own compost, Scott's Moisture Control, and Perlite. I actually think that the Scott's MC is some good soil. Has a nice consistancy and is not overloaded with nutrients like some of the other garden/ topsoils out there.

A lot of people talk shit about Scott's and Miracle grow but it has worked well for me. I use the exact same mixture in my indoor grow as well

I have also used the Fox Farm Ocean Forrest that everyone on here loves so much but that shit is ripoff!

$20 for a 1.5 cuft. bag is absurd!

If you have a grange co-op or other farm/garden supply check with them. I found a regional organic product with almost identical ingredients as FF Ocean Forest for a little over $5 for 2 CF bags.

What's regional to you? a lot of our regional shit is just that, shit. lots of clay clumps, bark, roots, etc.

I love using FF Ocean Forest indoor, but I can't justify paying that absurd price any longer.

I was on va k a fews ago in your neck of the woods and came up short from charlotte to winston- salem I couldnt find a bag of anything the whole time I was there, seen a few toy stores but just couldnt find a bag

I'm in Southern Oregon and Fox Farm headquarters is just over the California Border. I think some of the regional soil/fertilizer suppliers got smart and offered products close enough to FF formulas to avoid a lawsuit and take back some of that market share. Not only weed growers but knowledgeable vegetable growers (a far larger market) demand quality products and those suppliers responded to demand.

I love using FF Ocean Forest indoor, but I can't justify paying that absurd price any longer.

Same here (though I grow outside) but I'm reaching an age where making my own soil composition is just bending over and mixing way too many wheelbarrow loads. Those bags look great to me. I'll see how the regional stuff does this year.

yea thats the thing with NC, most of the better bud is either in the mountains around Asheville, or around Wilmington. Other places have it, just not in the same quantity.
