I wasn't "telling" anyone how to do anything. The OP was asking for opinions, based on the tent he/she has. I voiced my opinion...and my opinion remains the same (especially if the hood being used is not air-cooled or a cooltube).

I've grown many times with a 150w hps, and several times more recently with a 250w hps (in closets, not tents..with a S&P mixvent exhaust fan and 4" carbon scrubber). The end product was always very good, using either the 150w or 250w. My latest grow cab was my first attempt at using CFLs...and only because it wasn't feasible to use an hps in my current living situation. But, since I've used a 250w hps, and the OP was asking for advice about using either a 250w or 400w hps, I feel I'm qualified enough to offer my opinion here. He/she is certainly free to heed or ignore my advice. And, of course, you are free to voice your own opinion as well.
LOL! in this case he was asking more for facts! and NO a 400 is not to hot! NO a 1000 is not to hot! no 2 1000s are not to hot! Im not saying to put 2 1000s in there, just that the temp of the room depends on way more factors than just the size of the light!

I really doubt he would ever have to dim it with a 170cfm fan sucking through a sealed hood. I'm running a 600w HID + 200w of flouros in about a 3x4 tent with a 440 cfm fan running half speed. 170 cfm would easily keep a 400w bulb cool and would exchange the tent's air every ten seconds.
I never said the small fan wouldn't work! Just that it may not be enough for everything in the future and for the price dif. the larger might be better! and also mentioned slowing the larger fan in my original reply! With the hood you showed him that has 6in ducting holes on it so he would have to buy a couple 6in to 4in reducers. If you are going to get a 4in fan try to get a hood with 4in holes on it so you can just get 4in ducting

way more factors? air flow and room size being two of them ..

I've never seen a dimmable lol .. Someone photshopped that knob on the front didn't they lol I couldn't imagine dimming a pair of 600s to 50%

he is growing in a closet, the temps of the surrounding room will effect it! he asked about venting into the veg room, Im assuming that it is the closet that the tent is in, once that closet gets hot the tent is going to get hot, once the room around the closet gets hot, the closet is going to get hot. so for him, air flow/room size/surrounding room temp/ Intake air temp/ ballast location/ exhaust location ohh last but not least light size!

I would totally agree on getting a bigger fan if he can afford it. Might as well get a bigger filter and light and tent as well. I would recommend something like this -

600w Digital dimmable ballast and sealed cooled reflector here for $280 (subtract bulb price from the listed price) with free shipping http://www.urbansunshine.com/index.p...ducts_id=18512

Tent here for $95 free shipping http://cgi.ebay.com/Hydroponic-Mylar...item2eb480f6f5

Bulb here for $65 + $10 shipping http://www.ezhydroshop.com/products/...tput-Bulb.html

6" Fan and filter combo $195 + $23 shipping http://www.htgsupply.com/Product-GrowBright-6in-Tall-Boy-Inline-Fan-&-Charcoal-Filter-Combo.asp

That's $668.00 without the side lighting. If you shop garage sales/craigslist you can likely get the fan for $40 and the hood for cheaper as well.

Side lighting you can find for free at hospitals - xray reader panels are obsolete in the digital age.

Do they make 4" air cooled hoods? I thought 6" was the smallest they went which yes, would mean he would need some reducers.

yes they do make 4 in air cooled hoods! sunlight supply makes 2 and one that is switchable from 6 to 4. A 6in fan only being 40 dollars more than the 4in fan ( http://www.hydrofarm.com/pb_master.php?category=36 ) I would still get the 6in fan! you are going to spend 30 or more reducers and clamps. so you spend about 10 dollars more on the larger fan total and another 10 on a dimmer ( http://www.lowes.com/pl_Dimmers+_4294821967_4294937087_?Ns=p_product_price|0 ) 3rd row down on page (I dont use this exact dimmer but this is very similar), and you have have way better air flow for about 20 dollars more!
