Question on adding DIY COB lighting as supplemental

Hello Everyone,

Been lurking on this site for awhile now, enjoying the wealth of information to be had here.
I'm a new grower, with one plant and harvest under my belt. I've gone from diy cfl, to HO-T5s, to a Mars Hydro 600w old model. I grow for personal use and the prospect of making oils for some cancer sufferers in my family. My space is a 3x3x4 box, custom built for a space in my air-conditioned shed. Height is a problem , but sometime next year i'll raise the ceiling to 7-8ft after more experience.

Anyway, i'm very interested in adding COB lighting to my current equipment to max out what I have already. The cfls and T5s will be used in a separate veg/clone area. I understand that Mars Hydro products don't get a lot of respect on this site and i'm too much of a noob to be able to evaluate its performance because I've only had the panel for 2 months. Its a small, initial investment into a new field for me. I'm currently vegging 2 clones under the light and my aim is to add 3-4 single COB units around the area to cover the limitations of the panel and possibly compliment the panel for full saturation and light spectrum in my area. After days of research I haven't come across much info on adding COB lights as supplemental, not that their should be. The goal for me is to eventually replace the panel and go full DIY, but the tech evolves so fast that for right now id rather start off with a small investment to "fine-tune" my grow area. Much more importantly, i'm limited by a mere 15 amp line going to my shed. I have a 6000 BTU AC which will get use as early as March of next year, 6 inch exhaust fan, the MH panel (278 watts), 96 watts of T5 lighting on some seedlings, and 150 watts of security lighting. So I'm limited on what I can add at this point and would like to keep it under 200 true watts.

Thanks in advance guys!!!

Try 4-cxb3590 3500k 36v cobs with a meanwell hlg-185h-c1400b led driver 4 50w passive heat sinks with holders and reflectors. 200w at the wall. Build a second one and you can replace your mars fixture in time. For a 3x3 area 400w is a good ppfd to shoot for.
Thanks a bunch VW, do you recommend solderless accessories, lenses, etc?

Hey Chef Kimbo. I too am building out a new LED light in a box similar to yours. Have been looking for some of the same answers as you. Keep us up to date with what you choose and Ill do the same. Thanks.

Should be good. Nice. You don't need 400w for a 3x3, though. I use 241w (270w with fan) in a 4x2.

Check this shit out. This is using only 241 watts of COB in a 4x2 closet, fed only Roots Organics Dry Nutrients Player Pack nutrient system plus Roots Surge liquid microbe booster. Grown in Roots Organic Formula 707 soilless medium:

Big Thanks to everyone, highly appreciated.

Here is my modest space.P1010813.JPG

Its small, but it will get the job done with the right amount of light.

So, after all this information I have much research to do. I did get a glance at the Citizen chips, not much grower info out there yet on those but the price point is attractive for my purposes. Ill be taking a look at the Samsung boards as well.
The gameplan is to drastically enhance the lighting I have now, if the Cree Cobs are the most productive and durable options then that's the direction ill be going. It will be a slow process, so ill think ill start collecting parts until I decide on the Cobs.

Thanks again everyone

Those are Cobkits light engines using Citizen CLU048-1818 chips on an HLG185H-C1050b driver. Running full power in the pic. Fans not even wired yet and still only moderately warm. Tells me they'll survive a fan failure ok.

Bruh...That's sexy as hell.

What your tent dimensions?

Since those chips are running at full power, what is the maximum spread on them?

I'm debating on whether to go with the Samsung boards or cobs for my space.

Bang for the buck is Citizen cobs, and every bit a quality chip. The CLU058-1825 is more efficient and puts out more photons than the CXB3590. I'm just finishing a grow with a 4 cob, Citizen 1825 based, and they rock!

There are several grows here with citi chips powering them. Check out Big Sm0

They are running full power of the driver! These chips can go to 150 watts! sweet spot is between 50-100 watts
