Do you use the recommended rate of kln?

Thinking too much kln was my issue with the last round being that i added the soaking and not the misting rate. They were about to pop with bumps everywhere and just went into limbo, again, it seems.

Low light intensity. Decent water temps. Regular resi maintenance. Argh

I know you didn't ask me but I use 5ml for a 2gal res.

Couple of things I've done as a last ditch effort for the really stubborn cuttings -
Set a timer for the pump. Just a tweaking the air/water seems to make those nubs produce root tips in search of water, plus it gives the pump a chance to cool down.
Throw a frozen water bottle in the rez to drop the temps. This will knock back any nasties and give cuttings a fighting chance to root. Cooler water = more O2

I normally have 95% success with my cloner and if a cutting has stalled or hasn't rooted 14 days, I chuck it. But sometime I get overconfident and and only take a single cutting before throwing its mom into flower. When this happens and I need it to survive, I'll use the methods above.

I Absolutely appreciate the input. Timer is on its way. @curious2garden. Should take care of temp and swelling from over saturation. Soon as i stuck the clones with nubbins into some soil the roots popped. They're slowly recovering as i tossed the old lady into flowr.

Pretty sure the ridgid cuts didnt help either.

They really look like you have used some root powder or gel.
So many roots on such a small surface.
But you did not use anything, right?

thanks. NO, I haven't used anything but tap water for the last few years.
I used to use KLN & Pro teKt, but I get the same results without.

Must be something in the water where you live.

What you and Curious posted above is what I use as well. Non pH'd tap with KLN is the best formula I've found for getting those older hard-to-root cuttings to root.
Once the wound heals and 'nubs' form I refil the cloner with RO water and whatr ever I have on hand. Right now I'm using Power Si, and either RE or Rapid start. Roots explode within a couple days and then double/triple in growth going forward. (zinc plays a big role here)
And the health of the mother is one of the biggest determining factor and its often overlooked. I prep my plants the day before with a good foliar feed and this shaves a few days off too.

The cuttings I took from first gen seed plants had adventitious roots clear up the stem.
What beautiful long roots you have!

Those are the most beautiful clean roots I have ever seen in my life! Did you bleach them?
I am running a sterile rez DTW.

In the older HPA setup, I was using Mega Crop and Advenced Nutes PH Perfect line. I had nothing but trouble with PH issues and algae, and rotten smells in the rez. That forced me to use hi concentrations of chlorine and even copper, but nothing worked. The roots went from pure white to mixed with brown, to almost white again. It was a constant battle with the fuzzy hairs coming and going.

In the current AAA system, the chlorine concentration is less than 1 PPM, so very low. I forget exactly but it was close to 1/10th the "normal" chlorine concentration for a sterile rez, which is usually 2 to 4 PPM range

However, I think the main reason the AAA roots look so much better is Im using pure salt based nutes - absolutely positively NOTHING even vaguely organically based in origin. No seaweed, no worm castings, etc etc. Pure salts only. This includes the calmag portions. Im running Jacks 321 hydro.

That allows me to control the PH instead of the dam bacteria/algae doing it for me.

The nasty bacteria LOVE organically based stuff for food, but dont seem to like the salt based nutes as a food, so they have a really hard time getting established. Thats why I can get by with far less chlorine than you would normally have to use to keep a sterile rez sterile.

Plus, the fuzzy hairs that you can only get with very small droplets - around 50 micron - are pure white naturally, and make for a really hi contrast. Its very easy for me to spot anything bad going on because you instantly loose the fuzzy hairs and that pure white color. That makes any infestation of bad bacteria really stand out against all that bright white background. Actually its any bacteria at all that darken the roots. Ive tried "beneficial bacteria" and all they did was discolor the roots and kill off the fuzzy hairs - which is exactly what the bad ones do.

Its kind of a pain to get the environment in the root chamber just right, but roots like this give me a thrill, so its worth it.
