Recommend 1000w ballast/hood?

Hello 1991,
Yeah, really. I've only been an LED guy for 3 or 4 months but I realize the error of my ways. I bought into the quantum board hype, I'm glad I did. I was running 1900 watts of hps,.. I was just running my boards at 960w and it was too much... I've since turned the lights down and still plan on smashing hps yields.

Good luck either way, nothing like growing your own no matter what light

Seems a little premature to say HPS is dead when you haven't had a harvest off of your new lights. I'm sure they're great and all but let's be level headed.

CMH is where it is at if you are not too loaded.
It's about double the initial investment of HPS but about half of LED.
I've been trying to find a good CMH option for my situation but haven't yet. I flower in a 5x5 scrog and short of putting 4x315s in there, plus some AC, I just don't see an option. The 630s don't have that kind of footprint and the 315s are like a 3x3 flowering footprint. I did see they have a 940 DE (or something) which could be put in an ACDE hood but not sure yet until I read about some results. Spectrums seems great though.

Hey guys, got a few projects going on and I want to get an affordable but reliable 1000w hood and ballast. What recommendations do you have? :peace:

Gonna suggest you get into the right forum ;) Seriously though, no budget? No specs? Space/ tent? Scrog? soil/hydro?

Meanwhile: I roll 1.1lb solid top drawer per 4x4 @ 560 watts.. Running 4 trays per room, NO AC. Mid 80's with normal ventilation. $360 per 4x4 to build or $520 built (in MA). (8x cxm22 on 2x hlg-185h-48a - active cooled). Welcome to LEDs forums..

Nobody asked the OP what size area he is targeting with his coverage?

I'd say search eBay for a sweet price on a "Name brand" reflector.
How about a Radiant for a 4x4 or a Raptor if trying to hit 5x5+?
You can pick up even a big ass hood like a Raptor for around $170 to your door.
I would recommend staying name brand on ballasts too. Just deal hunt!
I personally like Hortilux Ballasts. (Platinum for a 1000W), hydrofarm would be my second choice. Had bad luck with Galaxy's and power outages
Good luck and ignore the Hate! :hump:

A COB LED setup that would serve the same space as an 1k in a ACDE would cost twice that, how do you figure LEDs are a better buy?

$100 bulb replacement every 2 years (if it's just a flower tent light...10k/12/365) makes for a long payback period on the LEDs, unless your electricity is extremely expensive.
you can replace 1000W HPS with 675W in LED (about the same ~$500) and yield the same

Does that $500 LED unit carry the necessary safety checks to not fuck up your insurance when everything burns down?

I guess therin lies the difference in our assumptions. When I was looking all around for needs and specs to build one a couple of months ago, nowhere did I find evidence that 9 COBs could serve a 5x5 scrog all that well. I was looking at closer to 20 cbxs at over $1k. I didn't want to build a light that left me wanting.

the components themselves are listed. if certs for an assembled fixture your thing youd have to spend another $200 (which still beats HPS in combined capital and operating cost after about a year or two)

well if youre married to cree CXB sure, but those chips are overpriced and dated when now there are chips with the same performance for half the cost.

5x5 is right on the limit of going from 9 to 16 cobs imo. that same setup with 16 cobs would be another $300-350 but youre bumping up in both power consumption (30%) and light output (35%). Now youre not matching an HPS, youre yielding more than it with 880W of cobs run soft. any competent grower with good genetics should yield 3 units with that setup pretty easily.

I've had 2 harvest, I'm perpetual pulling every 4-6 weeks. Don't assume you know what you're talking about when I've never shared any details with you about my grow.
