Hey all i was thinking about making a sound damping box around my inline fan but ive heard its a waste of time and ive also heard thats its a great idea.. I heard that it will over heat my fan......then i heard it wouldnt over heat it but that most of the sound comes from where its intaking air and that putting a box around the fan will only help a tiny bit but not worth the effort.......then i heard it works great.lol

If i deciede to make one WHATS THE BEST MAY TO MAKE IT?? WHATS THE BEST MATRIAL TO USE?? Anyone ever make one before and have any tips for me???

i watched a video on a growing that had a guy who made one but it doesnt tell you the materials but this is about what it consisted of. he had some kind of cheap wood , cut to the dimensions needed then stapled sound dampening material (the black foamy material with 'mountains' used for recording audio or other such thing) and put a muffler on the intake. he also put 2 of the hook on the top of the box and hung it from the ceiling by bungies , the video said that between all these things the fan is alot quieter. im trying to find somewhere that sells this sound material , i helped you guys out now hook me up with somewhere that sells this stuff !

ive built them befor for my blower fan, i used 3/4 inch mdf and the yellow sound dampening stuff also used for support on beds, look at your joann fabrics or sumthing liek that they will have it in the back by the foam, sumthing like 15 bucks for a king size piece of that foam. make a latch lid with 2 hindges and a simple hook or slide gate lock. drop the fan in run the hoseing to the fan and yeah that will cut down the sound a little bit.

i think that the name of the thread is something like.. hush, the neighbors can hear you.. i think if you do a search for the sound control thread, thats the one.. the op shows a step by step on how to make a box for a fan like your thinking of doing.. im in the same boat as you as my quiet operation fan is anything but, lol.. buts its more not the fan but rather the noise of all the air being moved that makes the sounds..
i'll search for the thread and post a link if i can for you, if i figure out how to to that, lol..

My fan/air noise dropped about 70% the second i hooked up insulated ducting to the intake. I bought 25' of it for like $35 at lowes.

Be careful using that egg crate material. That stuff is insanely flammable.

They help to where they are at least worth making IMO. Just make a square around the box using some cheap OSB or plywood, and line that (or cover) with egg-crate foam. Theres also Dyno-Mat material which is less flamable and may work better but cost much more.

hey thanks i found that thread actually right after i posted this thread.....Ya i think i will make that box .......im confused about the muffler i heard you put the mufler at the END of te exhaust not at the front......is this true? i also heard more noise comes from the intake side rather than the exhaust side.....then i heard its the other way around then i heard its the same eather way......WHOS RIGHT?? anyone know??

Hey ive seen that matrial your talking about all over the net.......its usually black and talks about how its for studios and its REALLLY exspensive and they sale it in like sheets and each sheet is like 70 bucks ......ive seen it on amozon and ebay ......just google sound damping and it should pop up......id buy it but not for 70 bucks a sheet.

I just made a box for my viviosun 4in online fan and used the black sound deadening foam used for cars .
It works ok but now my cfm is very reduced .
I think its cuz put to small of an open on the end and also cuz there a long curve on the exit side n it does go to a 4 to 6 in reducer put backwards what u all think I should do?

I assume that's a proper inline fan somewhere inside there. Cant really see what you've done though.

If you want to box the fan in then that's fine but you cant box the intake or outake of it.
Duct < Fan < Filter.
Put a box round the fan and fill it with rockwool , don't obstruct the filter.
If you have any car stuff left wrap the fan in that first.

The best thing you can do for lowering noise is to use bigger fan, filter and duct in the first place and then add a variac to control the speed and turn it down.
