he didn't say big gov, hence the 'size withstanding'...but now i'm getting nit picky
Well if he didn't say it in this thread then I must have just assumed he was FOR big govt. since he claims to be a, you know, socialist! I've never met a socialist or liberal who wasn't a proponent of big govt. The world is getting stranger every day though, so who knows?:-?

world is getting strange. i haven't talked to anyone who claims to be a republican for a long time....just people who parrot their talking points and vote for them every election.

Bare bones libertarian philosophy simply argues that people should be able to do as they please so long as they don't impede upon the rights of others. Anarcho-capitalism is the logical conclusion to that.

Another wanna-be libertarian...

Any libertarian worth their salt will tell you it is a travesty what has happened to their political philosophy...the co-opting of it by the fiscal and social conservatives has been horrific... your scorn for the cartoon strip speaks volumes...

I miss the Libertarian Socialists...they were much more interesting and had more productive ideas to put forward...
Wow...for someone that doesn't know me or my values you sure have me pegged. Why are you insulting me, personally? I don't quite follow your logic. Maybe you were just itching for some finger exercise... Or maybe... No you couldn't just be a douche that goes around insulting people for no reason, would you?

For the record, I am a registered Libertarian.

Shouldn't there be a distinction between individual liberty and corporate liberty though? I support everyone's right to make their own decisions, but I don't believe in a businesses' right to pump toxins into rivers or have people working in unsafe conditions. And I'm not sure the koch foundation is that interested in your right to smoke pot either...

Good post, buddha, that was funny as shit. And doc, I've never known you to be much of a troll....why start now?

a corporation should have no more right to despoil the environment or abuse its workers than an individual, but it should have no less rights either. the legal mumbo jumbo that imparts the rights of an individual to a corporation as a protection to its shareholders also demands of it the same responsibilities.

An understanding of the non aggression principle might be a good place to start when defining what a "real libertarian" is.

Granted the term libertarian has been hijacked by people that are not libertarian, and maligned by people that think the phony libertarians are the real ones.

Thank you for pointing that out. It's a little ironic that on a weed growing forum people would need to be reminded of what you state above...sigh.

I finally realized something just now.

We have all become a part of a "team" IE: Liberal, Libertarian, Conservative, etc. that we all spend out time fighting against each other.....the sad thing is that while we spend our time bickering the same old people are perpetuating the same old problems.

"They" have us where they want us, distracted and focusing our energy/anger against each other instead of them. "They" get richer and richer, using politics as a business and a personal piggy bank. As the more extreme voices of all sides get louder and angrier we are all getting sucked in deeper. We are being divided and conquered by our very own political leaders.

"You are FOR big gov't"... ooh, such a loaded phrase....

There is only one size of gov't and that is big. Gov't is big. We have a huge and complex nation that we live in. Fixing the amount of gov't does not mean it will improve one way or another. So size withstanding... I would like to see an improved gov't. A gov't that represents the people. A gov't which works with a demand-side economic philosophy. A gov't which does not discriminate against sexual orientation, gender, (non)/belief systems, race, creed, or age. A gov't that stays out of our bedroom, women's wombs and drug choices. A gov't that guarantees all citizens the rights to education, healthcare and childcare. A gov't that does not bomb brown skinned nations for their resources. A gov't which is truly representative of the people, not just the elite.

The US gov't is big and it needs to be big to do the job. I would like to see its mandates be carried out in a different fashion.

health care, childcare as a right? have you ever gone to a hospital and tell them you have a right to be there? its a business and if you have money theyll fix anything that ails you. (free enterprise). child care see: personal responsibility. aint got no money get a job!!! let freedom reign!!! socialist loser do it yourself, get you hands off my money, and stop thinking more govt is the answer.

I know plenty of Republicans. You're a liberal, and there is nothing wrong with that, but it seems we like to be surrounded by our "own kind". It's not very popular to be a Republican thanks to Georgie boy. It doesn't look like it's going to be popular to be a democrat once Obama is done wreaking havoc. And I'm not saying that because he is a socialist or a Democrat or a marxist or whatever he's been accused of or claims to be himself. We had 8 years of failed Republican policies. Now we get a reminder of what failed Democratic policies look like. It's too bad Americans have such short memories. Neither pary is going to fix anything. They are going to try to do what needs to be done in order to win elections. The stimulus is a good place to look at what I mean. We were told by both parties that we needed it and that without it we would be thrust into an abyss of economic despair! It's probably true but we were told it needed to be done quickly and without a lot of questions. Fast forward 2 years and look at where we are. Unemployment is at 9.6% and appears to be sliding in the wrong direction. Unemployment will more than likely not be extended beyond 99 weeks. We just got a taste of what is about to come. Those jobs are gone and they aren't coming back. Not any time soon at least. Without jobs our economy will continue to falter. I don't have to have a ph.D in economics to figure that one out. We have got to put aside our petty differences and work together. It sounds like political rhetoric but I'm actually being serious here. It's the only way we are going to survive this mess.:peace:

Good post, doc. However, I do think that the failure to "work together" has a lot to do with the political climate that republicans themselves created during the 2008 campaign. You can't call someone a radical possibly muslim marxist who hates america and then, as soon as the election is over, turn around and work with that guy towards sensible legislation. Ask olympia snowe what it's like to try to work out a compromise...

This is not to excuse democrats and they definitely take a huge share of the blame, but it's hard to make policy when the other side is more interested in politics.

And as far unemployment goes, we had a housing glut which also led to a glut in construction jobs. The sad reality of it is that a lot of those people are going to have to find different types of work if there are fewer new houses being built. I might be wrong about this and I know the recovery has been going better in my state than a lot of others, but it seems like most of the folks having a hard time finding work are tradesmen or construction people, so what might be needed eventually is some retraining for those people. I'd also like to see more policies to encourage jobs in manufacturing at home, although that might end up being labeled socialism...

I'm not talking about politicians working together. I'm talking about us, you know, the people. Divide and conquer. That's what they are doing to us. I don't give a fuck about labels. I try not to label myself because I've voted for democrats, republicans, libertarians..........The problem is that there is virtually no difference anymore. Our economy has been gutted. Whether intentional or simply an unintended consequence this is far beyond getting people retrained. Sure, that needs to happen but manufacturing jobs used to be the conerstone of our economy. Those jobs are gone and probably aren't coming back any time soon. I find it interesting that in the second sentence you start with the finger pointing. Don't you get it? That's what "they" want. They want you to say "But, but it was the Repukes fault!" Fuck that! We will never get anywhere as long as everybody keeps blaming the other. It's counterproductive and won't do a damn thing to fix the problems folks like you and I face on a daily basis. It has to stop! It's not one party's fault. It's both party's fault! Period! Our politicians have failed us. The system is failing us. It's time to cast aside party loyalty and start working together.:peace:

Rant over.

Doc, that sounds nice and all, but what does "working together" mean for you and me? The way the system is set up (for better or for worse) is that we both send different people to DC to represent us and if we feel that they no longer do, we vote them out. Sure, we might both get involved in say norml and try to get some reform there. We might both go 'meet your rep' events and voice our concern about specific issues. But I've had enough conversation with you on these boards to know that we fundamentally disagree on a host of issues and the debate in congress should reflect that. I'm trying to get rid of my congressman because of a number of stances he's taken, notably against MMJ. He happens to be a democrat (this is for the primary), but that's irrelevant. If the good people of my district disagree and want to keep him, that's fine, but I do have an opportunity to make my voice heard, as do you.

That's my rant...

You also seem to be under the impression that everyone understands or even cares about the issues, but they really don't for the most part. That's why half the country doesn't even bother to vote!

Yes, you are correct.

I had to do a bit of research but I've come to the conclusion that the term "cretin" is in fact a personal attack.
