The Bin Laden Discussion Thread

Finally! Almost 10 years after the worst terrorist attack on American soil, the leader/figure head of the organization said to be responsible has been hunted, found and eliminated. I found myself, like many Americans, jubilant on Monday morning after hearing the news that a team of Navy SEALs was flown into his hideout/compound in Abbottabad Pakistan, conducted a pre-dawn raid in which a handful of people, including Osama Bin Laden were shot and killed. Numerous pieces of intel were found and taken out with the SEAL team along with Osama's body. He was subsequently flown to the USS Carl Vinson in the North Arabian Sea and was hastily buried at sea:-?

In the days following his death I find myself wondering what this means for the U.S. and its allies going forward. I don't wish to discuss conspiracy theories in this thread. If anyone wishes to discuss anything conspiracy related I will be happy to start a seperate thread where that can be discussed. :peace:

I haven't noticed any tangible effects of OBL's death aside from Obama's poll numbers going up (always happens, wont matter come election time anyway).

I did just get a CNN BREAKING NEWS report on my phone that says a bunch of dudes in abbottabad have been arrested though.

edit: oh and it seems Al Qaeda has responded to OBL's death.

lol! I don't think anybody expects immediate changes or anything. I have a strange feeling about all of this. I'm surprised, shocked, happy, confused, and a little disturbed by this whole operation and the facts surrounding it. For starters, my hats off to the men who did this; I salute you. Being a combat vet myself, I have the utmost respect for all of our men and women serving in the military. These guys are amazing, I know a few SEALs and they are extraordinary people, each and every one. I also understand the fog of war and the need for secrecy and all of that. I still can't help but be a little disturbed by the fact that they shot an unarmed OBL. Another part of me thinks it was for the best as it saved us quite a chunk in trying and housing him securely for however long. I'm also a bit confusesd by the burial at sea. Why bury him at sea and not just put him in some unmarked grave in an undiscosed, remote location? The other part of me thinks it was brilliant in that it is the ultimate "fuck you" to these islamic militants. I'm not sure islamic law supports this sort of burial but I'm not an Imam. I'm shocked that he was hiding in plain sight in this very large compound in the location they found him. I'm surpised at how this op was conducted and that they took no casualties. These helicopters were evidently some sort of top secret stealth copter, previously unknown by the public at large. I'm amazed that we got him after all this time. Part of me is happy that they got him but I have this sense of "What now?" What does it mean for the war on terror? Have we turned a corner for the better or have we just ducked into a dark and dangerous alley?

I'm not surprised that his underlings and admirers throughout the world are pissed and talking shit. Unfortunately some (hopefully very few) will carry out some sort of vengeance. It looked like the billionaire sheik was almost broke when he was killed. I wonder what the rest of Al Qaeda's finances look like?

Iraq is officially over and we are drawing down our forces there at a pretty good pace. I believe we have around 50,000 troops left in Iraq. That's not very many considering how many there were at the height of the war and how long this conflict has been going on. I'm sure the reality on the ground is much different than we are told.

i think we will continue to see the nut jobs still trying to bomb innocent civilians to instill fear.

my hunch is that we will see these stoneagers start bombing for revenge. singular type suicide bombers. if we dont see that, we may have turned the corner against these barbarians. i will keep my fingers crossed that the good guys are winning.

i think a lot of it is getting worked out right now with all the carnage and upheavel in the mideast.

if the people who are taking over in those countries are rational, we will be on a better path. my hunch is, they arent.

so i guess what i am trying to say is, we are about to see 1 peace breakout, or 2 the bottom is gonna fall out. if i was a betting man, i would wager number 2. i just dont see rational people over there. leaders gunning down protestors and such, arresting people for being wizards and sorcerers. :-(

It'd be nice to get out of the region but to expect so to happen would be pretty niave imo. I fully expect something to happen (Pakistan+Iran vs. Isreal + the west? maybe) that'll keep us there. QQ...

I agree with Mame going to be Pakistan and possibly Iran vs American, Britain and Israel. Main goal being to disarm Pakistan's nuclear weapons which is a major threat to the Israel.

Good posts! I am really uneasy about this Pakistan situation. We essentially violated a sovereign country, raided a compound in what would be the equivalent of Annapolis Maryland, crashed a helicopter, killed a bunch of people, stole a bunch of shit and then boogied on out before the Pakistani military had their skivies pulled up! Pretty amazing and worrysome at the same time IMO. One of my other concerns is the lack of information we are getting. I want to see the video that the Prez and company saw. I don't actually WANT to see it, I feel like we NEED to see it. What about this chopper that still has an intact tail boom and rotor now in the hands of the country we just invaded and is pissed off at us? Is it just window dressing to appease the anti-American crowd over there or does it signal a shift in the already tenuous relationship we've had with Pakistan, post 9/11?:-?

pretty sure they said we blew the helicopter up.

i am not so worried about the sovereign nation shit. they obviously have been hiding him for years. if not actively then passively letting him be.

their nukes are definitely gonna need to be dealt with. i dont see anything positive coming out of pakistan. a bunch of prehistoric cavemen with the power to blow a lot of shit to smitherenes. not too much good can come from that.

plus the fact that they have little to no regard for human life....disaster waiting to happen.

oh, and for the video in the situation room....i have seen reports that they were watching a blank screen. something about hillary having the sniffles and the whole thing being staged. if it was staged, shame on them and their "transperancy"

They did blow it up but apparently from numerous photos being circulated by various media outlets the tail rotor/boom section, about 8-10 feet of it, appear to be intact. It looks like nothing I've ever seen before. I am a bit nervous about Pakistan's nuclear program, especially after the whole A Q Khan incident, and now this. As for them hiding him? It doesn't look good for Pakistan, that's for sure. No clue if they knew or whatever but it don't look good.

lol! I hadn't heard this but I'm not surprised. I am inclined to believe that video of the entire raid exists. I think we need to see it.

Prehistoric cavemen that managed to gain nuclear weapons......
War with Pakistan is inevitable IMO....just hope for the sake of the world that China don't join in which they probably will

man there's millions of outcomes none of which are going to take place b/c the power players at the top like things just like they are now. money is going from our bank accounts into theirs at the fastest rate in our nation's history. and they're loving it.

Finding bin landen in Pakistan, in that town, in that particular house (largest in the whole neighborhood) raises serious doubts about pakistan's resolve against the war on terror. i'd cut all aid to pakistan starting now, and I'd impose serious economic sanctions on them.

they were harboring a terrorist.

Cuba has never harbored a terrorist or supported a terrorist group, they have officially condemned terrorism multiple times, and yet they are on the list of states which Sponsor terrorism.....

I totally agree that this whole compound and the location of it is highly suspicious. The Pakistanis now have a few pieces of a stealth helicopter. I wish they'd done a little bit better job destroying that thing.

If it was not for Pakistan's role in the 'War on terror' America would not have 'defeated' the Taliban so easy. Pakistan has suffered the most from the war and has kept its mouth shut for a period of time where US drones have killed multiple innocent Pakistani villagers but they no longer tolerate it. How much would America take if Mexico was killing innocent Americans if there was a war between Cuba-Mexico

i'd impose serious economic sanctions, remove all military and civilian personell, close the embassy, close our border, expell all pakistanis from the US, the whole shebang....

until we have enough reliable intelligence stating that pakistan has implemented a program to reduce muslim extremism in their country, that that program is having results and that they are actively investigating and prosecuting corruption in their military.

until then, they can starve for all I care.....
