The Gas Company showed up without notice

I about just had a heart attack. The gas company showed up saying they needed to check my meter without giving me any notice. I think I fucked up because I panicked vs staying level headed and saying that I have a dog kennel down there and need to secure them before he may enter safely. Has anybody else had this happen? What did you do differently than I? Any advice would be appreciated

At the very least, I would call and bitch them out just to discourage it in the future.

Where I'm from they have some device they can scan from their vehicle when they drive by.

Edit: Sorry, I was thinking water meter for some reason, not the gas meter.

He handed me this and said to call them to schedule him to come back out. Or else they will shut my service off. I can’t have my service shutoff...so I gotta work all night long now and make the place vanilla again. I work all day tomorrow so my night and day are going to be a bit of a drag.

Haha, sorry man I was thinking water meters. Ugh I feel stupid
Gas meters here have the same thing. They drive by to read them.

Just thinking about it it seems the gas company would probably not hook up the gas if the meter was on the inside ...

Because how would they shut that shit off when you dont pay your bill lol
Be like fuck you ill pay you later lol.

Is there any tell tale signs your growing?
Smells ,hums, wierd vent pipes lol.

Is the gas man a ripper, cop ?

Just sounds funny cause up here the meters are on the outside and the gas guy comes and tests the line first for leaks then hooks the meter up and checks the connection and goes.

Why would they need to look at your "pipe" on the inside of your home?

I find it weird also. Meters are on the outside. They own the meter and the homeowner owns the pipes inside.

Here they have a thing they walk around with to detect leaks.

My gas meter is inside too. Comes through the foundation in the basement so all the pipes are underground. Having exposed gas pipes outside every house seems dangerous. The only utility meter I have outside is electric.

Historically gas meters were installed inside until 30-40 years ago, when outside became the rule, at least around here.
