Heating pads are recommended, but i've seen people rear them without it.that's it? no lights? heating pads? nothing? just a tank and some moss?
The temperature should be at least 70F. that's when they can be most active.
They really like cover, such as a hollow log, or, as i did, broke off a giant chunk of bark from a Mountain hemlock, and it forms a perfect house for it to rest in the day.
They like dim lighting, that also helps with their activity.
as far as water for a millipede you can mist them daily with warm water and they will salvage the water drops off themselves
If you do get giant millipedes you may notice they get little mites sometimes, dont worry about those they will be terminated. (and the mites i found had no negative affect on my plants when i kept him in my plant room for awhile )
they also like large branches/sticks to play on. also be sure to put a top on. I watched Mr Millins crawl on the screen, despite my large cage o.o
