We start seeds in inert seed starter soil and clones in equally inert peat pucks. Once the seedlings are growing their 3-bladed leaves, or when the clones are rooted, they get transplanted into a nutritious vegging soil mix in 3-liter bottles with the tops cut off. Once the seed-plants have two nodes and enough above them to cut off, or once the clones are settled in their new containers (couple days at most), they get topped. This causes the four shoots on the two nodes left on each plant to grow. The top two grow fastest since they're closest to the light. Once these top two each have a node on them, they're both topped. Two shoots start growing from each of those nodes. By this point, the two shoots on the bottom node of the plant finally reach canopy level, provided they received enough light. The plants then go into flowering with 6 stalks that will each become a cola. How well the plants respond to this training depends on the strain and how much light they have.

upthearsenal is right, but I have read at least 4 main leaves up is ideal. I also top again after those split and go up another leaf. Some strains however shouldn't be topped because it will reduce the quality of the buds. If you buy your seeds online usually the description will say if a plant shouldn't be topped (you can also use these descriptions if you know what strain your plants are :).

Good luck.

I top after the plant is generally 6 nodes -- I start my plants in a 1/2 gallon pots. Hope that helps
