Trimming

I've talked about this in the general forum but I wanted to make sure my Maine buddies are aware. A few months ago I heard about some of the various devices available to make trimming easier. They vary in sophistication and price, but they're all pretty expensive.

One that I heard good things about is the Spin Pro. Basically it is a big salad bowl with a grate at the top for bud to sit on. a four bladed wire spins underneath the grate to snip any leaves that poke through. A matching salad bowl sits on top. It has a dozen or so big rubber fingers inside to move the bud around. A crank goes in the top that you use to spin it. The blades are geared so they go around about 4 times as fast as you spin.
You just snip your big fan leaves manually, then snip off untrimmed buds and throw 'em in. You can easily put in an ounce or two of bud. About 15 cranks later you got nicely trimmed bud to put on a screen and dry.
Cuts 4 hours of work down to 1. It works, and works well.
They typically cost 5-600 bucks I understand. I got lucky on an eBay auction and got mine for about 260 shipped.
There are videos on youtube too.

I know I'm going to sound like a real moron, but trimming bud?? I know there is a logical reason, but for the life of me I can't figure out why.

I've been looking into a few of these trimmers that are on the market and some DIY ones but how close a trim do you really get with these? I like to really get in there so I would be disappointed it I spent a bunch of money on one of these and still had a bunch of leaf left.

Close. Check out the youtube videos.
Real talk.

The local company here (Grosca) has them, but the one they have is automatic - so I was REALLY curious and looking at tons of videos. Manual or automatic they are ridiclous.

Mine is called Spin Pro. Not sure, but I think that's the original and others are knockoffs. Mine came with like 10 or 20 extra blade sets, but I don't know when I'll need those.

Did you get it right from the manufacturer?

I don't think I know anyone who actually has one, besides you now. :)

I have no personal experience with machine trimmers (other than noting that BC bud seems unnaturally hard) but my California friends tell me that you lose a lot of trichs to the trimmer and, to a person, they pay people to help trim.

I appreciate the feedback and opinions. Of course hand trimming is going to be a better result. However, I think that my Spin Pro does a more than adequate job, especially if I clean up a few of the buds after, which isn't really necessary. Once dried, you really can't see the difference. Besides, when I hand trim I know I dig deeper than necessary to get to little stems and I lose trichs that way too. The catch bowl doesn't have that much in it when you consider what I have put through it. I take extract from that anyway.
It's a helluva time saver and I like it. The couple of people who have seen it are equally impressed.

I can certainly understand that convenience needs to be a factor in the equation. If it works for you and your patients that just gives you more time to attend to other responsibilities.

I agree with the loss of trichs, I think that is going to be the main draw back. But when the flowers are fresh I'm sure it's not as bad as you'd think. Your also losing trich's a lot of places in the process - thank goodness there are ton's more inside the flower. Plus, you can get most of it back in hash, tinctures, etc.

I think your harvest tendencies need to justify the purchase. I know I don't need one. :)

Right..wet weed. There really isn't much in the bowl. I am a patient/caregiver with two other patients. I need one :)
