Virginia Growers Thread

Newbie grower about to start my second outdoor season. Live in N.VA. It’s nearly officially spring and I’ve been itching to start growing again!

Q: When do you start germinating your seeds indoors to eventually bring them outside?

I’m thinking of trying 2 photo fems and 2 auto fems. Since we only get 4, can’t waste time w. regular seeds. One photo will eventually be transplanted into a 25 gallon fabric grow pot and the other photo will eventually be planted into the ground. I’ve read that autos should be planted in their forever pot and not transplanted. SO, thinking I’ll plant them in…5 gallon fabric grow pots? Sound about right?

Any / all advice is greatly appreciated!!

25 gal is the smallest i’d ever use outdoors.the bigger the better unless you don’t have space. For an auto i’d do at least 15 gal. Start them sooner if you’re trying to grow trees, later if not. But if you want trees you’ll have to go to 50-100 gallon or more. I always wait til the first of june to put them out days are still a little short and weather can still be chilly in may.

Thank you! Putting them outside in early June makes total sense, but how soon would you start germinating the seeds? Also, would you start seeds at different times for the Photos and Autos?

It depends on some things. Whats your lighting situation indoors. If you’re able to provide a good enough light source that will allow for good rapid growth then I’d probably start the auto’s about a month before. If you have inadequate lighting then maybe just a couple weeks. With autos you want to hit the ground running in top gear to get maximum growth out of the plant. The photos you have more flexibility with as long as you keep them at a minimum of 15hours lights on. And if you want to end up with bigger plants then start them sooner. Usually if i get them sprouted at the end of april and veg them indoors for a month they’re about 18” (ish) when i put em out and i end up with about 7’ plants after topping them once around mid june or so. The bigger they are when u put them out the bigger they’re gonna be in october. You’ll have to figure out what you want according to your space that you’re growing in and whatever limitations that puts on you.

Some newbie questions since this is the first time I’m using a tent and a real LED light. I’ve got seedlings in a humidity dome. Started germinating on 3/18. My 400w LED light is 24 inches above and dimmed to 50%. What temp / humidity is best for seedlings? When I checked online, I’ve seen quite a range. Also, at what point do you take the humidity dome off?

Mid 70s is a good temp. Seedlings need a high RH, I shoot for 60% once I remove the dome. I take the dome off once they show their first single blade true leaves. Here's a picture for reference. 20230707_185917_HDR.jpg

I dont use humidity domes but instead have a humidifier in my room , and like to keep it above 60% in the room and tents. (As long as I dont have anything in flower in same tent.) i like to have air blowing on mine to strengthen stems and i water around the edges of my dixie cups every other day.I use a ketsup bottle and it allows a good sqeeze around the edges. These are about 10 days old and ill be transplanting in a few days. Good luck!

I’m an old dog doing old tricks.
Used to grow a bunch outdoors many yrs ago but stopped. Now it’s almost all inside farming.
Feel free to hit me up if U ever need an opinion….and I’ll do the same.

So what strain(s) is everyone growing here in Virginia this season?
Outdoors?
Indoors?

I've got 4 different strains going:
4 Kingdoms – Feminized – Photo - Sativa
Short Nepali – Feminized – Auto - Hybrid
Blueberry Glue – Feminized – Auto - Hybrid
CBD Critical Mass – Feminized – Photo - Indica leaning Hybrid

The two Autos are inside and I JUST transplanted the two Photos from 1-gallon fabric grow pots to large raised beds outside.

How about everyone else?

I have 2 strains of autos going into flower right now. Nurple by Binary Selections and The Anvil by Gnome Automatics. I'll be running some clone only stuff this round as well with Motorbreath 15, Stardawg Corey, OGKB 2.0, Blue Dream Santa Cruz cut, 92 OG and Afgooey. All indoors as my property is heavily wooded and too much shade for outdoor grows.

@Mr.DS-420 - those look amazing! What size pots are you using in the first picture?
Thanks man! Those are 7 gallon pots, repurposed from my last indoor run. Literally pulled out the root ball and just dropped the clones in. They have been outside since the first week of May. The clones were extras that got neglected, root bound, and pissed off in 1g pots. I was going to throw them away and tried this as an experiment. I'm thinking about digging some big holes and transplanting them.
