Worms and castings

Hmm...interesting... We feed our rabbit timothy hay and pellets. Less protein and calcium, which is better for adult rabbits. If he eats too much alfalfa his urine gets thick and pastey, like toothpaste. I wonder if timothy has the same benefits as alfalfa? Time to Google That Shit...no pun intended!
We were feeding ours strictly timothy hay too until I decided to do a worm bin. I checked with the vet and he said we can do a 50/50 mix of timothy and alfalfa with no ill effects for the bunnies. We feed them the timothy hay pellets and alfalfa hay now.

Thanks St0w, that's a great idea to split the hay types. He is pretty open to varieties of hay, we've had other rabbits that are more picky... We are picking up worms Saturday!

Good to hear helphub! I would blend up some veggie/fruit scraps and add your bunny poop and whatever else to the bin right now. Let the microbes go to work on it for a few days before adding the worms.

Ah yeah, another good idea, I wouldn't have thought to start it early. The bin should be here today and I have been saving food scraps for a week or so...

Hey st0w, was it Jesse you met? Dreadlock bredren? If so, he's a great guy! He taught a Vermiculture Workshop this weekend I attended. Got the bin going last night and now am sitting on my hands to resist the urge to peek in on my new little buddies. I want to let them chill 24 hours before I disturb them...

Jesse was the guy! Really cool cat for sure. We chatted for quite a while..... he's full of good info!

Congrats on the bin! Be patient for the first couple weeks. I was getting a little antsy for a while wondering if I screwed something up, but the worms take a minute to adjust to their new home and will be rocking in no time. Best of luck!

I wonder how MMJ friendly Jesse and his business are? I wanted to approach the subject but the rest of the attendees were mostly little old lady types and I didn't want to make anybody uncomfortable.

If I had to guess I'd say he's hip to it. I actually met him at his house to pick everything up because it was just too much weight to ship. After seeing his place I'd guess that he has a nice little garden tucked away somewhere in there!
