what you are talking about is a sediment and chlorine filter. i use one as a pre-filter on my r/o machine. i'm not really sure what it would do for your water's EC though. i've never run just the pre-filter. went straight to r/o with the pre-filter. not sure you'd wanna waste the money on an experiment.

i don't think getting an r/o filter would be suspicious though. i have one at my house in the states and it feeds my fridge, ice maker, tap spout next to kitchen faucet and i fill up 5 gallon jugs for the water cooler with it. i only drink r/o water. a lot of people do.
 
i just tried it out and the pre-filter does a pretty good job with no water waste at all. i calibrated my meter and tested the tap water...it was 225ppm. then i ran just the pre-filter and it dropped to 125ppm. the conversion rate on my meter is 500-1 so you are looking at an EC drop from roughly 0.45 to 0.25. and like i said, with the pre-filters you don't lose any water. check out the stealth 100 or stealth 200 from hydro logic. they should work fine for you.

You absolute legend. Thanks for that:-) That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Just need to knock off a bit of that content to make things manageable.
 
Guys I'm think of going with a de ionisation vessel. My thinking is it might cost a bit to replace the resin but taking into consideration the wasted water of RO, plumbing it in, and the speed in which it filters, I think a DI vessel is the way to go.

What do you reckon?

if your idea is to grow with the water then it's not worth it. if you want to wash your car and windows with it then go for it. you'll have no spots. lol.

just a gimmick product from them to drum up some more sales. they have a uv light as well for bacteria but none of that is worth it. stick with the pre filter and you'll be fine.
 
The thing is I have to plumb the RO machine in then drill a hole through the wall, pass a water line some 5 meters across the house to my res. Then because my res is in my grow room it's thermally insulated so I'll have to fit a ball cock and somehow rig the lid of the res to allow the ball cock to rise out above it or I'll lose i'd guess about 30 litres of it's capacity. I only have a 100 litre res which I make all my feeds from. I'm perpetual harvest so it's a nightmare to rig up like 5 different reservoirs so I make each feed and manually feed EOD and let run to waste.

you are going to have to do the if you get a de-ionization filter, r/o filter, pre-filter, or any combination of the 3. just buy a simple $5 float valve. place the filter as close to the water source as possible and make the supply line coming out of your pre-filter 3/8" and run that to your reservoir. the float valve can be connected right at the top of your reservoir. just have to cut a little 1-2" hole in your res and screw the float valve in. after that just plug in you 3/8" line and you are good to go. i'm sure you could hide a 3/8" supply line? just fasten it to ceiling.

everything you would need to run that system:

tall boy filter (could use small boy too)

well I bought a v2 pure 50 advance of a mate for 25 quid. Fitted it yesterday. Works a treat. EC water goes in a 6 and comes out at 0.1! Just need to buy a stop valve float and a an auto shutoff drain valve and run 4meters of tubing to the next room. Might split it in the kitchen and put a manual stop valve on the split so I can fill the kettle up with RO water and such too:-)
