someone can worship a stone, for all I care. but people have a nasty habit of throwing the stone at my door, and when I answer the door, they tell me how wonderful their stone is.

That's what Buddhism is all about. The only thing that observes is the self. If you can't figure out the self, you have no way of the self observing the truth about reality. Even then, reality is only what we believe. But without Buddhism, there's no way to get there. There are probably other ways, but then you'd know all of Buddhism and the rest of the other way.

Ie. Quackery

Modern Buddhism doesnt even follow the Buddahs teachings by deifying him.

The stone is then but their tool. In the end, it's the self. That's all what God is too. We invent God in our minds, and that also becomes a tool. There are many tools to choose from that will get the job done. If a person realizes that, it doesn't matter what tool they use, because others can be just as proficient in other tools. The problem arises is when people try to limit our tool choices. That's just wrong.

No it doesn't. That's where your feeble western mind has failed you. We are the product of all the organisms before us who were our ancestors. If you go back far enough, you get to organisms who aren't human. Sounds very much like that bullshit quackery called scientific evolution theory.
