yeah theres trade offs either way. Hydro is finicky, but once you get your feeding schedules dialed in theres a lot to gain.
also my understanding is that with hydro, pests (mites) are generally easier to manage because there is no substrate for them to hide in. Seeing as we are not permitted to use pesticides, that particular aspect is crucial.

Interested in what you consider a small batch is, and your explanation on why there is more control versus a larger batch?
