That does not apply to everybody . Some take quality higher than yield . Leds are proven to yield higher quality plants . Greengenes took an 750 watt Apache tech led and a 1000w hps and showed the test results . Hps won in yield by a very small margin but taste and potency and overall appearance went to the LED on a blue dream run he did using the clones from the same mother . So re check your statement to at least say some people grow for quality and not yield . I'd personally would sacrifice a little yield for the above factors mentioned

I'm being a bit facetious. Only people who sell drugs for a living, where the price is artificially inflated by the government, can have that type of slash and burn philosophy in a mature market... Most pot growers don't even try to save money on overhead, but will cut corners on safety. I recently saw an HPS guy trying to use a 100A breaker for a circuit rated for a lot less. This is a dirty industry, and people can be very profitable still, even with the competition. You want to see competition? Let my state grow it too! We'll take an oz of weed to the price of an oz of cheese. That's why they still buy premixed nutrients, even for larger operations. It would "only" save them a few thousand a season to use DIY nutrients, for example. only.

Also LED grow panels are designed to be underpowered to preserve diode life, take that into account when using. This is why COB builds are gaining popularity.

As far as bud development , I find more dense nug growth but really couldn't say their is any difference in taste.

Most commercial panels are designed to be overpowered to make more money for the company. (cheaper to build) Most DIY builds are underdriven for higher efficiency. Having a longer lifespan is just a bonus.

Everything is worse in the legal states (in terms of prices.. at least in CA).

Are you trying to suggest that full scale legalization (without all the permits) would lead to higher prices? It cost 400-600 an oz when I lived in NY (That's 1x 193W 49% efficient cxb build an oz). Are you sure it's worse in legal states?

Edit: Keep in mind it's not fair to cherry pick dispensary prices, but it is fair to cherry pick black market dealer prices. I can't exactly open the yellow pages to find the best dealer, but you can avoid the most expensive dispensaries.

I haven't ran all the numbers but I think given clientele is a huge variable. Here in Texas dealing with guys who have been in it for a while versus your small town head or old head who just wants a reliable source or younger crowd willing to spend what it takes for better stuff. Going rates are ~$250-300/oz, $700-900/would, $12-1500 half, $27-3000 a lb. though if more into. Bulk ~$2k/lb. I don't think necessarily legality is hitting the prices as much as larger grows being more abundant and flooding. Though then again I know back in 03 I could buy some pretty good by the oz for $250 through the right person but could still get $400/oz from college classmates. Same as now sure you can find Ozs for $250 yet plenty of people willing to pay $2-220 a half oz. Again the differences if legal and black seem to be more closely related to the consumer and direct surrounding market. That's what I've observed over the past years and spanning back over the past decade and a half.

Though that could be also due to Colorado not being too terribly far. There is at least tons of talk about product bring from Colorado. As well as the old Cali claim. No telling if it's talk or truth.
