1000 joules of energy per second (watt) consumed produces 3400-4000 BTU/hr doesnt matter if its LED, HPS, T5, the worlds biggest vibrator. Energy consumed produces heat.

LED pulls ahead because you get more plant usable photons per watt without the high IR % that contributes to additional "heat radiation" from every object in the room that absorbs it.

thats it guys. these COBs dont run on magical unicorn farts. they produce heat and abide to the same laws of physics that everyone on earth does, except Matt Damon.
Hahaha, love the vibrator... Now I know why the energy bill is rising.... Lay off the Mrs..."1000 joules of energy per second (watt) consumed produces 3400-4000 BTU/hr doesnt matter if its LED, HPS, T5, the worlds biggest vibrator. Energy consumed produces heat"

@anomolies this is @werm11 's light using a similar config. I am guessing on the measurements, but hopefully this guides you in the right direction.

do you not have a metal supply shop for the angled alum? its literally half price or less versus HD & Lowes. and the 36" pre cut pieces are at even more of a premium. But, it may be worth it for you to have it ready at the proper lengths for a few extra dollars..

by the looks of Werm's build. 8 x 36" pieces will cover your build with no cutting, only drilling holes. 1/8" drill bit is just a hair smaller than 6-32 bolts, its a nice combo,
or if you have time to swing by Harbor F : http://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/hand-riveters/hand-riveter-set-38353.html

the "stanley tools" version is also good for a few bucks more. both have rivet packs utilizing 1/8" hole diameters.

also, this is the driver that comes with the 8 COB unit. I really like that 8 cob option going down to one driver and passing along a decent savings$$ Mark. nice work sourcing that driver, and it does support PWM?

Where else can i get the 18g wire? Only radioshack? Home depot only seems to have it up to 14g.

Do i still attach the potentiometer like in your vid?

Test this, buy two 100 watt lights, one being a heat lamp the other being a regular bulb. Put them in separate boxes with a thermometer. Come back to me with an answer as to why the one with the heat bulb is hotter. Both use the same watts.

Watts do not always equate to heat thrown into a room. Certain factors such as insulators and efficiency play a big role. Higher spectrums of light 700nm+ travel in sharper curves producing more friction and more heat by a large %.

(Hard for a high idiot to explain)

The only measurement I am sure of is the entire fixture is 30"x30". I bought the pre cut 36" brackets and just cut them with my hack saw. I'd have to wait til lights come on to measure the other spots.

The light works awesome...one thing I would do differently and still might is I would move the two middle cobs a tad more toward the outside of the fixture. I don't have a tool to measure the light but I get hot spots still in the middle of my footprint where as the edges that don't have the 3rd cob are clearly less lit up than the edges with the 3rd cob.

Has anyone moved from 1000 HPS vented too 800 watts of COBS? If so, what kind of heat difference did you experience?

Yea thats what i expected.. a 9th cob in the middle would be overkill with all the overlap

This is for a 4x4 space right? I was thinking of spacing mine 12 inches apart, do you think thats too much? How far are your lights from canopy?

Its actually lighting roughly a 3.5'x3.5' area. I think it would be fine in a 4x4 tho. I don't know the spacing on mine off the top of my head but i'll try to get some measurements later and give you my opinion on that. Fixture ranges anywhere from 36"-18" above the canopy. I have a pretty serious lack of head room in my flower area and each round I'm able to keep it under control a little better than the last but without my dimming knob i'd be fucked.
