Pistils vs. Trichomes

Yeah that's what I figured it's just a sample Bud off the side I'm going to let it go another week or so. I just cut that one off and trimmed it and took a picture of it today figured I'd have something to smoke in a week or so when I'm trimming! Took a smaller sample last week and it was pretty Stony. Trichomes are mostly cloudy but no Amber so I figured it's still a little longer, getting close though! Thanks for your opinion

Is it possible to harvest too late? All these posts seem to be saying no!

I would rather have more thc and less cbn.
Of course you can harvest too late, but harvesting when it's actually ripe vs too late or too early is different.
You seen the post with the pic of it being a little too early.... this would be what I'm talking about when it's just about ripe. The pistils have pulled in and the swell has happened. It is now almost perfect... Screenshot_20190807-144432_Messenger.jpg

So where do the tricomes come into play? Do you not look for the "standard" 30/70 amber/cloudy ratio in order to determine ripeness?

Problem is not everything ripens on the same day. Therefore, some percentage of degraded trichromes are needed in order to allow more to ripen to the cloudy stage.

I've looked up "peak thc and terpenes", and did not find references to amber.

Not everyone wants couch lock with that numb sluglike feeling that cbn produces.

Amber = degrading thc to cbn

Trichomes are ripe when the bud is ripe. Not all weed will be couch lock just because it got harvested later. If you grow a heavy indica that induces couch lock then yeah you will get that. If you grow a happy energetic hybrid then that is what you will get too. Why suffer loss of quality and weight by taking it before it's done?

This is exactly why I think weed has gone to shit. I've been trying tons of michigans and some local growers and dealers buds lately. It is rare that I find one that is good....and I can tell they took it too early. The high is weak and doesn't last long. Even when its strains I've grown and love...I wouldn't be able to tell that's what it is if they didnt tell me.

As the flower changes so does the end product.

Chiquita advertised that the perfect ripeness of a banana was when brown spots first start to form on skin, that is when the fruit inside is supposed to be most sweet , blah blah, I like the partially green banana for both firmness and flavor.

What about flushing? I am reading I am supposed to stop feeding 2-3 weeks before I harvest, but how the f am I supposed to know when that is? I was talking to a store owner today who said a couple of days of flushing is what I should do. I have some Final Finish flushing agent, when do I use that? Again I have read 2 weeks flushing, 3rd week final finish. My guy said today a couple of days is all I need.

When bananas are not ripe they constipate you. When they are ripe the fiber is perfect and things move the way they should. So there's that.

The other day on a different thread this was being discussed. One says yup when it's all cloudy it's perfect no matter what. Then another guy said a new study just came out and said peak ripeness is when it's actually clear. So are we suppose to start chopping between 4-6 weeks? No thanks

Flushing is as big as a debate as when to cut lol. To me it's one giant myth. Flushing only flushes the soil...not the plant itself. So all you are doing is depriving it of the food it needs in the last two weeks.

The internet says the idea is to stop feeding and the plant feeds on itself, getting rid of all the nutes that will cause harsh taste and throat burn. I have no idea, but I have smoked weed that was harsh and burned my throat. It may have been pesticides though.

I most likely say it's from the cure. If you cure too fast you get a harsher smoke. A long cure will be smooth. Same with the break down of chlorophyll..to fast and it has a taste...

Trichomes born and die through out the flowering process, no point looking at them until the flower is mature, and that's when the Pistils are brown and receding.
Its very easy to harvest to early, very hard to harvest to late.

I've never had more than a couple of amber trichs until after they swell. At least on the calyxes. If you're checking the trichs on the leaves you'll definitely cut early.
As to clear trichs and potency, I read about a researcher who found that there were actually higher levels of THC in clear trichs than in cloudy, but I can't remember the name. I was looking because I had a light fall on one of my plants at the 5 to 6 week mark, it snapped the stem clean off. All the trichs were clear, but I trimmed, dried, and cured it anyway. It got me high, but it came on fast, then faded fast. There's more to the high than THC.
