Hi everybody, I wanted to ask if somebody more experienced than me know this kind of staff.
Right now I have a 400w HPS light for 3*3feet grow tent. I was wondering how much LED I need to get same or similar results. I was looking at HollandStar light which is advertised as 1800w and I think it have 310w input. Regardless of that what's your ideas about growing under powerful LED lights or its mostly a legend of super growers.

Stay away from Chinese Blue and Red style LED. That light is NOT 1800W.
A 3x3 will only require about 300watts of LED. You're going to want to look for boards or strip/bar lights with Samsung lm301b diodes. That's what you'll see most cimpanies using. Are you savvy enough to screw a few things together, plug a few wires in some connectors, and such? If so building a light is the way to go. Massive savings.

2 of those hung side he side would be just almost enough. You could probably turn the potentiometer under the rubber plug on the driver and Max out the voltage and get closer to 150watts each.

I started growing indoors about 6 years ago using California Lightworks led's. While I got good results I always felt that I wasn't maximizing the plants potential. Even after getting past all of the typical nube mistakes, I still wasn't satisfied. I've used every led that CLW makes. The best results that I got was with their COB lights. I also bought a couple of 315 watt CMH's with 3100k bulbs. Still, I was not satisfied. I wasn't getting the weight or nice frosty dense buds. I was doing everything the same as a friend of mine who has been growing for a bit longer than me. My friends grows always far exceeded mine. He recently retired a 600 watt HPS and offered it to me. So, I installed it and did a grow with it. The difference was startling! Nice, big frosty buds and plenty of weight.
I have been a big proponent of LED's. However, after my experience with the hps, I don't think that I'll be going back to led anytime soon.
I understand the specs and efficiency of led's. However, my eye test tells me that I'm getting better results with
hps than with any of the other lights I've tried. I'm going to use my cobs as supplemental lighting only.


All that being said, for you, I would recommend the California light works Solar Extreme COB light. It's a quality product built in the US. It's 400 watts and you can probably find one for under $400.

There's your problem Lady! Those fixtures aren't even close to adequate. In fact their junk. You need to use newer Samsung boards/strips and I can assure you the results you're looking for.

Hey, thanks for your response. This actually makes total sense. I will keep my trusty HPS light . But I will look in to building a smaller led light for my veg room. I have a cheap led light rn which doesn't really give me any outstanding results.

Hi there...just thought I would share my experience. I switched from 2x 600 w coolhoods to Timber cobs and some other leds to go alongside them. Specifically Mars sp250, Mars sp150's, and an sf 2000. Lots of lighting yes, spread between veg and flower.
My results have been steadily getting better, this is my second run.
I grow for personal, no cash cropping.
I will not go back. Better quality plants and Bud, easier environmental controlling, just much better for me.
Hps definitely grows, and leds that are well built definitely grows.
It all comes down to grow style, environment and preference.

Maybe I just don't understand your tone or there's something lost in translation...….Lady? Who TF are you talking too. Sounds kind of condescending....None of lights that I mentioned are "junk".

Yes, I acknowledge that they don't perform very well compared to newer led's. However, they were about the best made American grow lights at one time. Their boards, heat sinks and warranty were all first rate. At one point I owned 15 of their lights. However, they have not kept up. As I mentioned, the best results that I have gotten from any of their products is from their new cob based lights. As for wide spectrum led and quantum boards and their ilk, I want to see grow results that sparkle. Lots of the photos that I see show less than dense tight nuggs and unimpressive frost. They may produce lots of weight. But who wants mass quantities of marginal weed? If I'm going to spend significant money on a new light I want to know that I'm going to get the results I'm expecting.

What space did you run the 600w HPS in?
How much wattage of what Model CLW models did you run in that same space ?
Did you notice any environmental changes with the HPS?
What was the weight difference?

Here is my current HPS grow. You may notice a couple of autos on the sides of the photo.
I am running the Hps grow in a 15x20 closed off space. My previous led grows have been done in a 3x3 and a 4x4 tent. I did not have a inline fan for the lights.
I used a solar 440 and 880, solar system 550 and the solar extreme 500. I also used them in an open environment with reflective mylar on the floors and walls.
The best results for me were in the following order:
1. Solar extreme 500
2. Solar storm 440
3. Solar system 550 - fyi I had the light controller for these lights of which I ten of.

Yeah, I bend the longer shoots to a horizontal position as needed.
There are several schools of thought on defoliation for light penetration. I tend to not over trim sugar leaves. Too many nutrients and plant energy reside in them.

I haven't seen that. However, my own opinion is that thc production is dependant on a number of variables. My observation is that my bud is frostier and producing more trichromes with the hps. Unless your bud is tested by a certified lab, thc strength is kind of speculative.
I'm about the look, smell and taste.
