Medical Data Show Covid Vaccine Unlikely Before End of Year, PanAgora Says

Investors may be waiting until 2021 before a Covid-19 vaccine becomes available, according to quantitative pioneers PanAgora Asset Management Inc.
The Boston-based systematic asset manager is using its ability to parse vast quantities of medical research data to infer whether any of approximately 60 trials currently underway will succeed in producing a successful vaccine, said George Mussalli, chief investment officer and head of equity research at PanAgora. Their findings may disappoint those hoping that access to one soon will boost markets.

“It doesn’t look very promising, based on today’s data, that there’s going to be a vaccine any time this year,” he said in an interview on Friday. He does see progress before 2020 ends, though -- “we find that there’s a really good chance that by the fall or the end of this year, doctors will have a toolkit to treat patients.”

CBC news foggy, we get our facts straight not much political interference in science up north. CBC is a credible source and I see your slagging them too. I provided the story, but no commentary, people are free to make up their own minds based on credible responsible sources and the CBC is one, like the BBC.

Speaking of poorly motivated ad hominem attacks that display moral poor judgement...

Your article was also informative and useful, your spiteful opinion, not so much. :D

Of course, you don't understand. You never do.

The novel vaccine. It's a prudent investment in research and because the potential reward is off the charts, it's worthwhile to build manufacturing capability as well as make a large quantity speculation that it could pass. That said, any of those vaccines have practically zero chance of making it through testing at all, much less ready by the end of the year. If we were doing this ahead of the crisis it wouldn't register on any major news outlets.

It's also true that I never thought cheerleaders were attractive. Not even when I was their age. Not now. Especially not cheerleaders who are retired old men in Nova Scotia.

Some of your post was interesting and on topic, the rest unwise and again poorly motivated. You appear to have difficulty communicating without resorting to such things, many others here have noticed it too and often been on the receiving end of many an arrogant insult, much like AC, but I like him too and do not allow such things to overwhelm me and skew my better judgement.

here you are, taking and presenting everything as if it were personal. It's not. As your posts indicate, you know how damaging Trump's selling of hydroxychloroquine was. It's also touted as a distraction from what Trump should be doing, which is overseeing a national system for testing, contact tracing and isolation protocols. That HCQ crap was only the first example. Now we have the "warp speed vaccine".

That vaccine. It's great that we/Canada are investing in research into developing a novel vaccine using new tech. It's also practically zero chance for passing through testing. Yet, here we are, every day, you post more crap about it.

So, here I am asking you to stop being Trump's propaganda tool.

If it were just about communicating science and tech, you would be posting it elsewhere.

Your judgement? Not present.

Call out all propaganda, but please not the CBC, as far as integrity goes and the two experts who were interviewed.
Lulz

That article?

yeah, that's propaganda. "Will there be enough to go around?"

I'm laughing at that preposterous headline while I type. Just post that shit elsewhere. "Will there be enough to go around", when the testing is in such an early stage is a ridiculous question. Oh yes, that was definitely propaganda.

Is Canada doing enough to implement widespread testing, contact tracing and setting up a safe, humane way to isolate people who may be infected? From what I've read, they are not. So, this vaccine is a worthwhile investment, don't get me wrong but that article was most definitely pap fed to you and other adult children. I'm guessing it's because your government, just like mine, needs to distract people so that they don't see the inadequacies in real world, practical and demonstrated effective containment methods. But maybe I'm wrong. If you can get your nose out of the woo woo science pages, you tell me what the Canadian government is doing to implement nationwide system of testing, contact tracing and isolation protocols.

I believe you called DIY a censor
on another thread. That’s what this sounds like to me.

I didn’t have a problem with his post as I’m comfortable with being exposed to different opinions. If 4 out of 5 dentists choose Crest is the 5th dentist a quack?

I didn’t pay much attention to the video so I didn’t get as worked up about it as some. If it’s really an offensive post we have the option to ignore it and “bury the bone”.

I’m comfortable enough with my own reasoning abilities that I can view information and decide for myself what is safe.

We are being flooded with dumb and unprofessional reporting on a subject that is very difficult in the best of times. There is a science and technology forum that is appropriate for the "gee whiz, lookat that", kind of stuff. I avoid that kind of crap because it's not dependable information and yet, here it is.

When I want to learn more about a technical subject, I read AAAS, Smithsonian and other sites that supports professional technical journalism. The CDC site has a lot of good stuff in it on coronavirus. You won't see much about optimism about HCQ or the new vaccine now in stage 2 testing coming from the real scientists. Our resident amatuer virologist, on the other hand posts crap that seems almost giddy in excitement over what's happening.

But yeah, this is a ridiculous argument. He's a fucking unfiltered copy and paste kind of guy. 90% of what he's posting on the subject is nonsense and he doesn't care. Nothing will stop him. I'm not going to, that's for sure.

I still am amused at his post of an article expressing concern that there will not be enough of the vaccine. Right now, this is the last thing for anybody to worry about. So much else is left to be done and the odds of a vaccine being ready any time soon is low. So, it's a distraction from the real issues. This kind of propaganda is an indirect danger or threat because people will die if there isn't enough investment in testing, contact tracing and isolating exposed people and that article therefore is a distraction away from what's important.

What's going on in that regard in Canada, I wonder? In the US, we have 50 different states doing 50 different things. In other words, in the US, we're screwed. Pardon me if I get cranky when I see some bullshit article on this bullshit subject and I call it for what it is.

A disastrous second wave is practically inevitable in the US and instead of trying to head it off or prepare for it, Trump is all hot and bothered about his low chance of success "Warp Speed" (propaganda) vaccine program that won't deliver a vaccine when he promised.

To talk about today's issues that matter. That's what the politics forum is for.

You do get that by linking these videos it increases their visibility? That spread over the entire internet by right wing trolls trying to confuse everything so Trump can get away with his piss poor response in protecting our country (once again) because it pushes these videos into everyone's youtube/news feeds.

And while you are able to distinguish from reality, how many people out there are so utterly confused that they look for hope and a savior, and how easily swayed will those people be to join up with Trump's cult?

Like it or not, this shit is dangerous, and is being pumped out (through funding) and amplified by Trump trolls everywhere and here with DIY.

Putting a warning label on this kind of shit like Fog is doing is not the worst thing in the world.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply.

I understand and agree with most of you’re positions on this topic but I would argue everything is political, even discussions about treatments for a disease. There have been similar posts and threads in this political forum without backlash. DIY has a lot of opinions. Some I agree with and some I don’t. I have the choice to read and respond to a post or I can choose to ignore it.

Most of us here are reasonable people and can decide for ourselves what to do with information provided. We don’t need to be protected from potentially dangerous ideas. At least I don’t.

This is a scary disease and the more we learn about it the less we know. I’m with you on being as cautious as possible. When my life is on the line I tend to err on the side of caution.

To answer your question, we are doing the same in Canada as different provinces are opening up at different levels. My province of Ontario is moving too fast IMO and I’m concerned about it.

Cheers.

I understand your point of view and have no problem with warning labels. I have no problem with anyone calling out a post that they feel is inaccurate or dangerous.

I read the same post and brushed it off. If anyone read this post and thought I’m going to start taking hydroxychloroquine they are fools and I have no pity for them. It may be cold but I see that as natural selection.

Why should I be denied reading an article for example because some idiot might take that information and harm himself or herself?

Misinformation will always be out there and you can’t regulate stupid.

Who is denying you anything in reading that article?

And pretending that you are immune to the constant barrage of even one word like that drugs name is actually constantly reprogramming people, sometimes it might be in a good context, but that word constantly flashing along with the word politics has an effect.

That is the brilliance of this right wing (Trump/Putin/MBS/insert dictator here) militarized trolling campaign on our citizens (every democracy's), it is constantly working to divide us up and filter out the ones that get caught up for them to further exploit to their benefit.

This is a scientific issue being hijacked by Trump to turn political so that he can use it to divide us and increase his chances of getting elected. And pointing out that it is going on and very dangerous for people who are confused by all of this noise is not stopping you from being able to read it.

Another effort at voter suppression and risking citizens lives for power. Will Donald try to close or paralyze the USPS to suppress the mail in vote? It's the only thing within his power here, states make the rules. He is leaning on the red states pretty heavy on this, but it looks real bad for the local politicians and will piss many people off if they have to go to the polls and stand in line for hours (a national disgrace).

Maybe I misunderstood but it looked to me like DIY was be accused of “promoting propaganda” and chastised for it. I disagree and don’t think that’s what he was doing. There was talk that it shouldn’t have been presented in a political forum. I disagree with that as well.

I enjoy reading your posts and respect your opinion. For the most part we see things the same but there will be times we disagree.

Cheers
