Scary Stuff...

When he speaks of national security, he's talking about civilians volunteering for service like the peace corps, If peace corps members go to a country and help people with water, buliding infastructre ect, it is another form of diplomacy that strengthens are national security. People that are helped by americans and american orgnizations have a tendency to look favorable on the U.S. The same with energy, are dependence on foregin oil is a national security issue
 
if you listen at 16:30 he says "we are going to grow are foreign service, open consulates that have been shuttered, and double the size of the peace corp by 2011 to renew are diplomacy, we cannot continue to rely only on are military in order to acheive the national security objectives we have set"
 
I truly do hope I'm wrong. I hope he misspoke (which I tend to doubt considering how verbose the man is). IMO, if I am wrong, then I would have expected the man to simply emphasize the efforts of organizations such as the Peace Corp and the importance of such organizations in stabilizing and maintaining good foreign relations. IMO there would have been no need to call for a civilian national security force every bit as strong as the US military. When I link his speech to his voting record on FISA and PATRIOT, I tend to be suspect of his good intentions.
 
when he says civilian national security "force" he is clearly talking about peace corps and other orgnizations. He is emphasizing the need for more americans to get involved with public service and foreign service because civlians can make a difference when it comes to our national security. Military orgnizations shouldn't be the only ones promoting America and her ideals around the world.

I hope you're wrong too, Dave, but I think we'll find out shortly... I just hope that I'm able to get a visa into Brazil if you are right... or the Ukraine, or Russia. Anywhere where there isn't a wanna be Hitler.

That Obama speech from the 4th of July is the same one where he states his goal to have students be required to put in at least 50 hours of service. He's explicitly expressed that he would like to require service in the military or community in order for students to take advantage of college grant money. While also supporting a draft and supporting women be eligible for such a draft as well.. I certainly am not the only one looking at all of this and drawing worrisome conclusions..

Yes, I repeatedly state to do your own research- I am not required to have to do research for other people- this is a free country, we still have freedom of speech- where does it say I can only speak if I have citations for all of my words? I am not writing a book, it's a post on an internet forum. I'm a stay at home mother who avoids stress and arguments to begin with- and have much better things to do with my time that repeat research I've already done for others who do not wish to do so.

I went to a private school that required a certain amount of community service. It was annoying, but not evil, I mostly had to help old people with lawn work and stuff. If thats all I dont see why that would be terrible. I dont really see much of a pont to it. but, ...

It's a matter of principle. Back to the, is it really charity if its mandatory? debate.
 
and its a good debate! I'm just saying, that would be pretty low on my priority list. (actually I'm not quite sure what I'm saying)

What was JFK most famous for? How he inspired people. We've grown up, those of us born in the 60s, with this image of this great man who could do no wrong. Yet, nothing could have been further from the truth, from phone/wiretapping to getting us into wars and conflicts we had no business engaging in.

This was my effort to keep it succinct. How'd I do?

Does "community service" equal "charity", though? I mean, sure, at first blush one might assume so. But for me, upon closer inspection, this is not a necessary part of the construct. It's "service to the community". As for making it mandatory... I like it for criminal sentencing purposes, I'd have to chew on the concept for those taking grant monies, say, because I think that what might result of their education or whatever they do with those monies would be the repayment itself. Hm, so far, not lookin' so good.
 
When I was a kid, I did community service, multiple times. Maybe 60 hours worth, painting the underpass, fixing fences at the park and such things.

Drag racing and speeding tickets. I didn't feel very charitable tho.
 
upon further pondering, it kind of remind me of early policing, in early America (and some European countries) everyone had to put in their time as a "police officer" but the rich people would just pay the poor people to do their time... not such a good thing, but not too bad... drugs are bad though, no doubt.
