LED vs HID finally a clear winner!

Ok guys the LED vs HID argument for me is finally over. My 600HPS bulb decided to explode and the hot bulb parts fell to the ground and melted a hole in the bottom of my tent. Luckily I am in the basement. But beware if you’re growing on carpet and using HID lights they CAN explode!

So my question is, is there a LED that puts out heat? It’s a little cool in the basement and the plants won’t see 78-82.

I’m trying to flower a 4x4 and I need a light that puts off a little heat.

Air cooled hoods will help exploding bulbs. Prevent it or at least catch the pieces. But I still am now on the led wagon!

Yeah it melted a hole through both layers of the grow tent. It could have been bad on carpet.

In the summer I would be heating the basement while the upstairs is cooling. Not my first option but it may be what I end up doing. I was just wondering if anyone had a light that was known to put off a little more heat.

I can keep it ~70-74 but I don’t know about 78-82.

Yeah almost a necessary consumption of watts when your go led is heat.

Hlg boards run warmer than bar style lights. Snd they kick ass

That's scary. I've had a 315 watt cmh bulb explode but it's double jacketed(i think thats the right term) so the outer casing kept everything contained.

I have automatic fire extinguishers in both tents just to be safe.

I have a hard time keeping heat up on my tent. I’ve resorted to pumping air in thru top and venting out bottom helps during lights on for sure. I also cut down how much air whips through the tent.



Im wondering if color temperatures can effect how much heat is output, like if a warm 3000k led puts out more heat or transfers more heat than a 4000k.

I'm on my first run with led light and my temps usually peak around 78 just before lights out, for most of lights on they are closer to 75 and my plants don't seem to mind

I'm thinking the spike to 82 was when I was taking light readings with my pulse monitor

I grow in a room that gets pretty cold in the winter because of the insulation & it’s right next to a window. I only have 75w going in the 2.3x2.3 tent and I’m hovering around 75F with a space heater outside the tent pointed at it. One good thing about the small space is I have 8 - 1gal pots in there so the humidity stays at 65-70%. It works for now.. I have a 4x4 to set up in about a month or so. We’ll see how that goes.
The space heater I have is small af tho. So it could be better.. but it’s not a basement. They also have slim radiators.

Haha I bet fire is every growers biggest concern other than getting caught by the landlord or cops.

I paid €100 for 2 automatic fire extinguishers which is well worth it for the peace of mind.

As for leds 3000k/4000k shouldnt have any difference in radiant heat output.
With hid its a bit tricker: 1000w of hps or mh should be the same heat, but the mh coil/filament inside the bulb burn hotter: the 2200K /5000k spectrum rating is related to the light emissions of a blackbody object at a certain temprature.

One thing to note though re led color temps:
One of the reasons you need to control your lower temp limits with leds is due to transpiration: you need to work your environment and temps to get your plant to "sweat" which is the motor of your roots drinking. However many people forget that this is not the only factor in transpiration; spectrum, specifically blue and uv, have a very strong effect on the stomata opening. So even though the 4000k will give the same heat as 3000k the 4000k will have a leg up in the cold since it has almost double the amount of blue. But as you approach maximum light intensity this advantage will get less and less as the temps are also needed for the metabolism to keep up with the photosynthetic rate.

If I was having difficulties with keeping temps up I would try using my lung room to raise temp. Less air exchange in the vent room should help. Or I could even have my tent in a tent. The leds do produce loads of heat, but we suck it out of the grow area and send it on it's way.

Heating mat underneath the pots may also help.

Earlier in the week I changed back to hid to veg with, by the time I added heat led was costing 25/30% more to run with less than ideal temperatures still.
