Is technology going to save the world. . . or kill it?

My only question is what will get us first?
Will putin blow up the world? Will the chinese blow up the world? Will bird flu mutate and either kill us all or starve us all?
Will a maladjusted AI decide we're vermin that needs to be exterminated? Or will we just slow cook ourselves to death in our own stupidity and greed?...Tune in tomorrow to find out...

To be honest, I just do not have time to keep track of how technology progresses, I constantly see that there are new applications that make our lives easier and easier. For example the last application I got to know about https://celltrackingapps.com/enter-cell-number-read-texts-free-without-installing-on-target-phone/ there was the SMS tracker, with the help of which it was possible to read e-mails. Now I'm getting scared to correspond with my friends, I'm afraid that I can be watched.
Oh, you certainly can be watched, but while i'm sure there are some "voyeurs" out there that might tap someones phone for personal reasons, most thieves just want passwords, account numbers, that kind of thing.
Large companies routinely "watch" everyone's phones, collecting data that we all gave them the right to collect when we didn't actually read that EULA we all click on to make it go away.

On one hand as a kid in the 70's it was predicted to be like the Jetsons by now,but other than dig, and how people are raised it hasn't changed as much as forcasted. But on the other Social media has had a damning effect on our young and in aiding the proliferation of misinfo.,fake news, and hate in general. I knew this medium would create alot of bad ass, brave killers w/the distance of a keyboard involved a lot of whom would shit their pants expressing their views in the flesh, I liken trolling to prank calls on steroids. The amt. of sm. bus services online is dizzying,I'd never thought I'd be able to call a dog shit removal co.,all this has promoted extreme lazinessIMO. The internet of things?,Do I really need dig. connection to my fridge, coffee maker, toaster,c'mon man.but the by far SCARIEST thing is AI,it is creepy and frightening, and count me out on that.

There is nothing scary about AI. It's just another technology. What's scary about using Google Maps, Netflix, or Amazon? AI has been used for years by many companies and most people don't even realize it. There is a lack of understanding which seems to be causing fear among some. Over time that will change as people learn more about this technology that's been in use for decades.

It's not even clear if an AI is actually even intelligent, as that very word lacks a general scientific definition. The human brain has about ~110 different cognitive abilities, which give us more power than any other lifeform, but a computer can only best us at a few of those, never all combined. The worst is people that think an AI has a conscience as we do, and humanizes it in as to think, once it comes alive, it's gonna strive to kill us. It's not like humans that are born with greed, jealousy, anger younameit also embedded in its mind.

Technology may save the planet, but it might need to destroy humanity in order to do so.

A friend of mine told me the other day that the company he works for can save money by laying off half the coders and letting AI write the code. I found that a scary thought.

then why do the ones they're experimenting with right now threaten people? tell people it's afraid of things?
aware or not, they aren't stable or reliable right now, and shouldn't be more than carefully isolated research tools.

Hope you're right on AI,but as it progresses and surpasses Humans, will it not conclude that human flaws have no place in the world and turn on and against us in frightening ways, maybe even reaching the conclusion that WE have to go.

Come on now, this isn't some sci-fi movie like the terminator where machines are going to start annihilating the human race. Many people that don't understand AI just reference some interaction someone claimed to have had with ChatGPT. ChatGPT is AI but AI is much bigger than just ChatGPT. You've been using AI for years and just didn't know it.

Lets see what Bing has to say about why people fear AI.

Bro,I'm 57,I don't pretend one iota to understand AI,but w/the conveniences tech has brought us you've got to admit it brought undesirable consequences(online fraud of epic proportions, misinfo.,vulnerability of crucial systems that never existed prior, bullying, effect on children,etc.).I've seen respected people caution about AI and it's potential ramifications, based on the effect of prior tech I think AI is concerning while freely admitting I'm lost when digging deep into it,I did see a NY Times tech correspondent say dealing w/the chatbot was creepy though.

It's amazing how many people are just now becoming aware of AI. It's been around for years. ChatGPT is not the only example. This is way back in 2015. I see value with robotic firemen that can think for themselves. It can save lives.

While the next generation of the robot will be designed with enhanced intelligence, communications capabilities and extended battery life, Lattimer said the robot would likely always take its orders from a human in a console.

Despite this, the algorithms that are being developed would allow mobility and decision making by the robot as a team member.
“The robot has the ability to do autonomous tasks, but we have a human in the loop to allow an operator to intervene in any type of task that the robot’s doing,” he said.”We’re working toward human-robot teams. It’s what we call the hybrid force: humans and robots working together.”

I get that,it is amazing, but apply AI to war and a can of worms opens up,what element of human control will remain(w/conscience involved),w/heart/blood/sweat/tears/skin in the game removed will it make war more inevitable, easier to unleash. Will the dilemna of losing the advantage to a opponent who goes 100% AI w/no safegards force other nations to remove human/moral control or be at a disadvantage. Those are simple questions I raise as a relative neophyte to potential consequences involved

I'm the same age as you so you're not to old to learn. AI and ML (machine learning) is basically just algorithms and data. There are potential undesired effects from everything. That includes AI. But I see more positive than negative. I also understand peoples apprehension. I think the potential benefits outweigh the concerns many have. That's just my opinion. Time will tell. Nobody can predict the future not even AI.

It sure would suck though if cars started driving people off of cliffs in the future. Most new cars have some AI in them. Lets hope they don't all get together to cause mass traffic accidents in order to lower the human population.

We have Smart Bombs which can reduce the number of non-target casualties when a military strike is made.

we honestly have no fucking idea what it will do...we never have any idea what any of the shit we unleash on the planet will do, it's past amazing that our arrogance and incompetence hasn't destroyed the entire race multiple times, and even more amazing that that incredible luck promotes hubris, instead of deep gratitude and a motivation to be more careful in the future.

But we're not as smart as Xt...Neither are the experts...We should all just accept our inferiority and take his word for things, as he's so much more intelligent than any of us. It would just save us the headache of trying to think on our own.

Maybe we should all shit-kick in the mountains until this AI thing goes away.Oh wait, other countries are working on this as fast as they can,and you can be certain they Will use it to take our lunch money.Anyone not blinded by ignorance can see this.
