I've been a Commercial Remote Pilot since 2015. You basically have to take a Part 107 Aeronautical test at a testing facility, which is usually an airport. The test is fucking hard. I studied for 2 months, and got an 83. It's really overkill. You could be a Private Pilot with all the stuff you learn in class. ... this is only if you work for money. You can be a recreational pilot for $5 registration.... which everyone is supposed to do. Once you're licensed up, go make some $$. I can't tell you how much money I've made flying and filming. But I'll get a call from a Lawfirm wanting aerial footage for a client who thinks an energy company is breaching thier land, and I drove 30 min, flew for 10 min. and made $600. I've done work for PBS for a documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and is on Amazon Prime. The Dealerships are my main clients. It's easy money if you can get your foot in the door. It's actually gotten easier to find jobs because a lot of pilots gave up and let thier license expire (good for 2 years), and never re-tested. And clients cannot hire you unless you are a fully licensed Part 107 pilot.

That's good pay.
I almost don't wanna know how much worse (or impossible) this would be in canada.
What about the actual rig you fly to be able to do this? Not some amazon toy. What are you flying? Been a while since I poked around on youtube looking at all the cool drone stuff. And what's it called, formally, what you do? Aerial photography or something?

I fly pretty much the latest DJI drones and Pro ground gimbal cameras. I'll go get footage for a company (raw, but color graded) and send it to Dallas for full production.. Kinda like this...


.. and then again, I'll do it all myself including aerial, ground footage, edit it all together with graphics, music, voice overs,... the whole deal.



Im just known and a Commercial Drone Pilot, Senior Video Editor.

Pretty cool.
Just curious, in the shots where the vehicle "follows" the drone/camera, do you fly the drone "backwards", or is the camera just pointed backwards? And is that flight done "manually" (or some kind of pre-routed gps method)?

Thanks!.. those RAW shots were shot with me laying on a piece of foam in the back of my truck with a gimbal camera… it was just easier than watching out for trees flying backwards. If I do a tracking shot with the drone, I try to be in less confined spaces. Otherwise, I can tap the person or vehicle, and it will “lock” on it and keep it center screen no matter which direction I’m flying.

@2com ... We'll I think I have finally loosened the grip this family of Dealerships have had on a production company out of TX. They let me do full production on the 2 Ford stores, and Im filming full production on 2 Hyundai commercials tomorrow. They will air on 3 stations for the whole month of Dec. in North TX and Southern Oklahoma.
